Padres vs Dbacks

I think we all want the Padres and Chris Paddack to do so well but we sometimes forget that baseball is a game that can turn on any pitch and Paddack is a young guy.....he will learn and continue to grow and improve, The same thing for Lamet, Patino, Gore, Davies, Richard and so on.

Went from up 1-0 to down 3-1 in a blink of an eye....The bats have to get moving because no lead is safe and not just the Padres....it's Baseball

Personally I like watching Paddack pitch....in, out, up and down..fastball, change up, curveball and a mini slider....he is a pitcher when it seems like so many other guys are "throwers" and there is a difference for sure.

I just wish we could see the game in person....TV is fine but Garlic Fries and Cardiff Crack Nachos sure make it a fun Saturday Night at Petco 🙂

Paddacks’ issue tonight was strike one.

Hes been incredible so far this season getting that first pitch strike....tonight he wasn’t and got behind too many times.

Oh Yeah....That Tatis Guy is Pretty Good

He sure puts a nice swing on pitches that are left over the plate.....fast hands and really "quick" power

Love it

Is there a way to clone a few more of him?  Sadly, Paddack wasn't dialed in with his control and paid for it in the 6th.  Likewise, our offense was one big zero after Tatis.  If we can bring runners in with 0 or 1 out from 3rd base, we're not going anywhere.  So disappointing.

Getting a little concerned with only 2 BB total in last 2 games. I hope we don't regress to low OBA with little BBs. AZ is 12th in the league in BBs allowed. We need to bring back the earlier patience that was scoring runs, 1 run HRS won't get it done.

Paddack may not have been really sharp but giving up only 3 runs (and two late on solo HR) is still a solid performance. Didn’t really struggle through any long innings.

Now the offense scoring only 2 runs (on Tatis’ two HR) was more concerning.

Sort of flashback to previous years .... Padres get runners on 1st / 3rd and no one out ... Grisham strikes out, Machado hits weakly into a double play. Either just lofting a sac fly would have put the Padres up 2-0 and change the arc of the game.

Players go in streaks but Padres are not going anywhere unless the #3 and #4 hitters start becoming difference makers and driving in key runs. Consider:

#1 Tatis .... OBP .412 / #2 Grisham ... OBP . 369. Runners are getting on base ahead of them.

#3 Machado ... 193/303/333 ... 2 HR / 7 RBI

#4 Pham ... 236/344/309 ... 1 HR / 8 RBI

Those are well below expected offensive lines for middle of the order bats .. BA not good but more worrisome is the low SLG ... just not making quality contact.

Pham’s career line is 276/372/467 ... so below his history across the board. Machado’s career line is 277/335/481 ... also below his history across the board.

25% of the season done ... can’t wait much longer for both Pham and Machado to begin contributing in a difference maker role.

Add that ranked by OPS in ML ... batting order Padre rank:

1 .... 1st  (Tatis is doing his job)

2 .... 11th

3 .... 19th (not good)

4 .... 26th (not going to make the Padres a playoff team)

For the most part the #3 and #4 hitters have been (in some order) Pham and Machado.

The "ultra patient" at the plate approach Profar & Garcia are maybe the most extreme examples of, simply doesn't work when the SP is throwing strikes at a high rate.  Garcia had an AB where he took 3 called strikes.  Like Little League...Drives me BONKERS!   The stupid thing is he didn't walk anyone all game, so not sure what the logic is in THAT patient of an approach.

Obviously Pads HAD to get more selective / chase less than last year, but you do have to adapt to the K % rate of the SP... Pads weren't walking because they were impatient; Kelly was simply throwing strikes @ 63% clip (Paddack was 59%; low for him).

Pads career #'s vs Bumgarner are terrible... except for Tatis of course (5-9, HR).  Guys with > 10 AB's are all well <.200 BA:

Hedges (0-12... sigh), Hosmer (.111 = 2-18), Manny (.182 in 22 AB, 1 HR), Myers (.174 in 46 AB, but 3 HR)...

... BUT so far in 2020 he's not the same MadBum.

I would just go MEGA RH today & give some guys a blow on the getaway day...

Tatis, Olivares CF, Pham, Machado, France 1B, Myers, Mejia (S) DH,  Hedges,  Profar (S) 2B

Insert Grisham & Hosmer later in regular lineup spots.  Could shift France to DH, etc.  I know, I know... Mejia DH?!  Looking for the matchup vs LHP...  but Hos or JC likely to be in lineup...

A game of adjustments and I think the opposition saw what the Padres were doing early (and successfully) in working the count ... racking up a high BB% / OBP ... then proceeded to tell their pitchers to just crush the strike zone to see if the Padres can hit.

Think the Padres (at least some) are not adjusting because they already know they are not great hitters and need to work the counts for any chance ... not working though. Others seem to not be waiting and working the counts but are beginning to swing at those early over the plate offerings ... and not working either.

SS Tatis

3B Machado

DH Pham

1B France

RF Myers

CF Grisham (L)

2B Profar

C Mejia

LF Olivares

RHH bias against Bumgarner. Looks like the Lamet - Mejia duo is going to be the norm.
