Padres vs Dbacks ... the Opening Series

PreviousPage 3 of 5Next

Wow a 4 hour game, getting over at 2 AM my time. Small price to pay for a victory.

2 gripes tonight. Tatis 2 more errors for 3 in 2 games and Tingler left Stammen in for 32 pitches . Too many for him and of course he gives up a HR.

Still much much more  good than bad

You guys watching the game get the impression that Fernando Jr. is pressing a bit?

The K's and E's lead that way?

Not sure the wisdom of the Padres moving their game start times back to 7:10 PM (for most games) when the “pace of play” produces a 4 hour game.

Does little to boost the viewership on the East Coast if they are trying to build up their fan support by carrying the window 10 PM to 2 AM. Frankly the West Coast window of 7 PM to 11 PM looses viewers late.

Darvish and Snell seem to be slow workers, so not so sure we will see games under 3 hours. Probably does not make a big difference for the real dedicated viewers but the more casual fans (who they want to become dedicated) are the issue.

I am not getting the impression he is pressing. He went through some real out of sync periods last season.

Unfair really to guess his mind set but seems to me he has lost a bit of concentration and is relying on this raw talent to carry him.

Disagree.  I think it's very obvious Tatis is "jumpy", "trying too hard", "over-amped", "pressing"... pick your wording:  Tatis is playing like the kid in little league who's way better than his teammates & is running all over trying to play 5 positions.

  • Even discounting ER where he kind of slipped, that's 2 in 2 games
  • Almost picked off due to bad (overly aggressive) baserunning yesterday, but he ends up winning praise with "Matrix slide" (risking injury)... in THAT game, this play is NOT what anyone should have been focusing on afterwards.  I don't think it's the right thing to do to focus on the outcome due to his amazing athletic contortionist ability when what led to it was pretty poor fundamental baseball.  If Jorge Mateo does that we're saying he has to use better judgement...
  • Tries to steal 3B with 1 out & Hosmer up.  Not close.  Costs a run when Hos HR's.  Yes, armchair QBing due to outcome, BUT it was so obvious that he was going to try, the C & 3B  knew it...
  • Has looked impatient at plate, expanding zone etc.  At least 1 or 2 AB I feel like he gave up a little down 0-2, 1-2 vs trying to battle
  • But the big one for me is the OF collision.  He did the EXACT same thing the 1st game in CF; "stealing" a catch that CLEARLY belonged to the OF.  He or Mateo could have been hurt for no reason.  Hustling out there is awesome, but has to know where he (and the OF) is on the field & have some trust teammate will be in position to make that play

Tatis is a superstar.  He will be fine.  Just needs to exhale & let the game come to him; stop trying to force the action & make highlight reels.

I almost never miss innings...but even I only made it to 1:30.

Tatis is certainly trying to do too much.....like the guy trying to hit a 5 run home run. He’s trying to earn his $340 mil in the first series.

Surely someone has spoken to him about taking it easy.

Pads lineup already out for today:

1-Tatis, 2-Machado, 3-Pham, 4-Myers, 5-Cronenworth (1B!), 6-Kim (2B), 7-Mateo (LF), 8- Caratini, 9- Musgrove

Mateo definitely earned the start (vs LHP), and a good time to get Kim in too... but leaving red hot Hosmer out of lineup ; and he's hit Caleb Smith well (.364 11 AB; only Padre > 5 AB)?!?!!   Hope he's not hurt?  Early double switch or straight sub?

worth mentioning that unlike Darvish & Snell who have to go on regular rest to finish the homestand, Musgrove gets the off day, so lines up to start 1st game of road trip with an extra day of rest.

NEED to get at least TO if not beyond 5 IP today with 3 guys in pen down, so I expect Tingler to give him a little longer leash, but still don't really want your SP going 100-110 P first game of season.  Hopefully Musgrove can work a little more efficiently.

No Hosmer????

Stomach bothering him?

Luckily, no.... this just popped up on UT..

First of all, a source told the Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee that Hosmer is fine, unlike last year when his battle with gastritis became public after the first game of the season.

So, perhaps Tingler views the first lefty starter as the best chance to get Kim his first start as you don’t want your bench players sitting too long. Perhaps there’s a pinch-hitting matchup that Tingler is eyeing for Hosmer in the middle of the game, setting up a double-switch that sees Cronenworth shift over to second and Kim come out of the game, especially if he looks as overmatched as he did in his first plate appearance in the majors (a strikeout) and toward the end of spring training (.480 OPS)

I like the idea of inserting Kim to start vs the LHP, but thought it would just be for Jake.  I'm guessing he gets 2-3 AB vs. the LHSP, then Hosmer in, Jake back to 2B.
