Padres vs Dbacks ... the Opening Series
Quote from fenn68 on April 1, 2021, 4:26 pmQuote from WindsorUK on April 1, 2021, 3:56 pmDarvish threw 93 pitches in less than 5 innings.
Did he not have much command today? (Can only tell so much from the box score)
Seems like a lot of foul balls got the pitch count up along with a few “soft hits” early. Command was not great but OK. Things fell apart a bit after about 75 pitches.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 1, 2021, 5:12 pmFirst 4 1/2 innings were fun.....then it got dicey.
But all’s well that ends well.
Bumgarner is just not a good pitcher anymore....he gets by on his post season reputation from years ago still.

Quote from 84padres on April 1, 2021, 6:06 pmHill was out of the inning witha 2 runlead but Tatis error, then HR, tie game. Then has Vogt struck out but 3rd base ump says check swing, next pitch HR down by 1.
Nice relief pitching by Kela Pagan Pomerez and Melancon.
Great game by Cronenworth hitting and defense. Hosmer had a very good game at the plate and so did Will
1 and 0 .

What am I missing?????
Wil has over 300 career PAs in each of the first 6 spots in the lineup. The difference in production in any of them is minimal. Last year he hit 6th most of the time, but he was productive wherever he hit. I think his increased production has far more to do with the new level of talent around him and his own hard work than it does his position in the lineup. I doubt he cares where hits in the lineup and frankly I think the argument for keeping him in one spot is a little insulting to him. It discounts anything he might have done to get better and makes him seem mentally soft.
As for wanting to put him in the 4 hole against lefties, it's simply about production. He has an .821 career OPS against lefties. Hosmer is sitting at .665

That win may be "just another win" in the long run, but NOT losing due to that catastrophic inning (first time EVER a team hit 4 HR in 1 inning on O.D.) is HUGE I think... type of loss that could have loomed over the first 10+ games... plenty of candidates for goat (not "GOAT")
- Jayce Tingler getting pushed back off the field by his "Ace" who by own admission was "off" all day & was getting up there for a game 1 pitch count with next start on normal rest. It's getting spun as "Tingler backing his players"... which is horse^&*%... that does NOT happen to a vet MLB Manager. If you want to stay in the game, don't take 85 P to get through 4 2/3.
- Darvish. What do you think Tingler does next similar situation
- Tatis. Heroes all over, incredible comeback, and the "lead story" is Tatis' "Matrix slide".... which he had to make & risk injury on b/c he almost (should have been ) got picked off his first time on base. 1-5, 3 K's including with bases loaded--at least 2 K were weak; kind of "give ups" when down 0-2, 1-2 -- then TERRIBLY timed throwing error on a routine play at a crucial moment. He also caught a fly ball pretty deep in OF that really obviously should have been the CF jogging in, not Tatis backpedaling & spinning at a weird angle full speed. I love Tatis. I love the joy. But heneeds to CALM DOWN, play as a player on a team, and let the game come to him; not try to force his way into the spotlight constantly. Want to earn the contract; FIGHT every pitch of every AB.
- Umpire. Blatantly obvious batter did not hold up & Hill should have been out of inning.
- Hill. Victim of the E & bad call, but NOT the performance you want game 1 as one of the few guys in the pen who can be optioned when others get healthy
- Ha-Seong Kim. Minor, but his AB was pretty rough. At least the first one's out of the way.
Hosmer will get the most credit, but I think Jake was hero of the game. Others:
- Myers. Good sign
- Pham. Hit 2 balls to deep warning track
- "Big 4" in Bullpen: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
- Marcano. PRO AB impacted the game in a big way as he came around to score
- Profar. EXECUTION getting the sac fly to go ahead!

Quote from hoffy51 on April 2, 2021, 10:11 amMore good news. No Grisham, and Tatis and Machado went 1-10, with 4 k's and no RBI's, and we still scored 8 runs!

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 2, 2021, 12:29 pmI chalk up the "silly mistakes" to Opening day.....full season..... with fans excitement.
Tatis just got paid....I'm sure he is trying to do too much.
Wants to justify his salary all on the first day.Like trying to hit a 5 run homer.
I think he will settle down real quick after that performance.
Winning that game "despite" all of that is what's the most impressive.
No way we win that game two years ago.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 2, 2021, 9:20 pmKind of ironic Snell is pulled early in his first game since being pulled early in the World Series.
On another note....is it me or does Tatis seem to be out of sorts at the plate,on the bases, and in the field to start this season?

Quote from 84padres on April 2, 2021, 9:26 pmAnyone else's heart skip a beat on that collision in LF ? Tatis needs to let the outfielder make those catches.
Feel bad for Snell but Tingler isn't going to make the same mistake 2 games in a row
