PADRES VS. ASTROS

Don't  forget Jake from Tampa and his 3 hits and new Padres grand  slam streak

We have found our closer in Perdomo ... at least if there is an 11 run lead.

Only 31 more games like this and in the playoffs!

At least for now ... we should be given some credit to Easley, Dickerson, Kirby, and Tingler (and Preller) in assembling this line-up and getting them rolling.

2019 worst OBP, terrible K%, and a lot of solo power. 2020 the new guys (Grisham, Cronenworth, Profar) have changed the overall feel of the line-up .... Myers is a new man ... Machado is not looking more like the player they signed .. and Tatis is better in plate displace and (if you have not noticed) in his defense (credit Dickerson) plus Hosmer has altered his approach.

That is a huge makeover in one year .. with half the same key bodies. Coaches getting through to the players in a way the previous group did not.

I credit the fact that Andy Green is long gone.

Lots of good things happened tonight.  Solid defense by France - not expected.  Great sacrifice bunt by Torrens to get that 9 run inning going.  Davies adjusting after a tough 1st inning to be able to stretch it all the way through the 8th.  Able to rest Tatis, Machado and Hosmer when Baker pulled Correa and Reddick.  That's something the Rangers should have done, if their manager had any class.  Home runs were nice but getting runners on via walks and hits made the game.   Excellent!

Just what the Dr. ordered!   Bullpen looks full go to back Morejon.  TOUGH matchup with Greinke, but let's keep it rolling!

Great game all around.  With Greinke throwing Sunday, I was hoping to take 2 of 3.  Now that we have taken the first 2, the third game is playing with house money.  If Morejon does as well as he did against Texas, and it remains a close pitchers duel then we can see how Tingler handles his best bullpen pieces.  If Morejon gets hit hard and its a blowout loss, we can see how Baez et all... do against the Astros.  Good learning experience.

Greinke has been very tough this year with ZERO home runs given up and only 2 walks in the whole month of August vs. 23 K's.  This will be a very difficult test.   Went 8 innings in his last start against Colorado in Houston and only gave up 8 hits and no walks; sort of like the Astros'  Zach Davies.  Hope Morejon is up for the challenge and can keep it close and maybe the Padres' hitters can get to  Greinke later in the game.  An afternoon start, so maybe we'll get the unexpected in tomorrow's game!  Go Padres!

  1. Trent Grisham (L) CF
  2. Fernando Tatis Jr. (R) SS
  3. Manny Machado (R) 3B
  4. Eric Hosmer (L) 1B
  5. Wil Myers (R) RF
  6. Jake Cronenworth (L) 2B
  7. Jurickson Profar (S) LF
  8. Josh Naylor (L) DH
  9. Luis Torrens (R) C

Patiño looking like the guy we were expecting.

Totally dominating these hitters.

Given all the RP available and an off day tomorrow ... not surprised Morejon was pulled early ... only 36 pitches / 24 strikes. However, was not effective and getting the pen in before more damage occurred probably was an effort to keep the Padres in striking distance.

Should reopen the question about the #5 SP going forward. Not critical for the playoffs and Tingler implied that with all the off days in late Sept they may just go with 4 SP ... so maybe a 3 week issue ... 4/5 starts? At the same time don't want to burn the pen so probably would like longer starts for those games.

So far Lucchesi (2 starts) ... Morejon (2 starts) ... Perdomo (1 start) ... Quantrill (1 start) and none over 3 inning as I recall. Have Patino and Baez but neither appear stretched out to go deep into games ... same if you want Quantrill back starting (and that hurts late inning relief). Have the feeling that no one at the alternate site is stretched out to go deep into games now ... and remember we are only talking about the next 4 of 5 starts.

Not sure the best game plan ... guessing with 15 pitchers they just go the "bullpen day".

Might also beg the question about the status of Lucchesi at the alternate site ... a veteran with a better 2018-19 track record that would suggest he could give them 4-5 innings. Gore as the elite prospect ready with his command?

The way Patino is pitching today (and in his last 3 appearances) ... he may get the next shot at #5 SP but not stretched out either.
