PADRES VS. ASTROS
Quote from fenn68 on August 21, 2020, 6:04 amBig series against a very good team (8 straight wins) ... could be a key to strengthen being in 2nd place in the NL West.
Starters: Richards (FRI); Davies (SAT); TBD (SUN) ... Morejon?
Available in the pen with a day’s rest: Stammen; Strahm; Quantrill; and Guerra ... Pomeranz (day to day).
==========
Astros are on a winning streak while being devastated by injuries to key players:
SP: Verlander; Urguidy; Peacock
RP: Devenski; Osuna
Bregman (3B) ... Brantley (LF) ... Alvarez (DH)

It helps that they have key players out with injury but they are on quite the winning streak.
But then again we’ve won 4 straight so somethings gotta give.
I‘m just glad we don’t face Verlander.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 21, 2020, 10:01 amIn their 8 game winning streak (6 at home), they were getting some excellent starting pitching, not giving up more than 2 runs versus Seattle, Colorado and SF but not winning big except for an 11 run game vs Seattle. The last 2 games have been slugfests at Colorado, scoring 23 runs but giving up 14 runs. I'm hoping we get the pitching version that was blown up in Colorado and the modest hitting that occurred during most of their homestand. I think we are overall better than Colorado and Seattle so it should be a good series with us having a chance to do well if Richards and Davies perform as in the past. Morejon is probably the opener on Saturday, so we'll see who is available to pitch from the bullpen by then. Need a couple of fresh arms - Eickhoff? Reyes? Bednar/Perdomo not eligible until 8/26 & 8/28, respectively. Trade? Lucchesi?????

Quote from Randy Manese on August 21, 2020, 2:48 pmMcCullers throws a high percentage of curveballs and from what I've seen so far, Padres haven't been very successful against curveball pitchers. Hopefully, they can be patient and maybe the 2nd time through, get their timing to be able to do some damage. I'm thinking a low scoring game, which probably favors Houston given our bullpen. Don't expect a 5th GS, but I'd really like to keep the winning streak going. Go Padres!

Quote from fenn68 on August 21, 2020, 3:09 pmPadres players have not matched up with McCullers much ... Machado 0 for 11, Hosmer 2 for 8, Profar 2 for 3, and Hedges 1 for 1. That is it.
Line-up has Garcia at 2B - Cronenworth at SS - Tatis DH - Naylor out of the line-up.
Also, flipped Hosmer to #3 and Machado to #4 for this one.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 21, 2020, 4:26 pmIf our 6-8 hitters can perform better than their 6-8 hitters, think we have a good chance to start the series well. McCullers can be very tough and I hope Richards is on today. Go Padres!

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 21, 2020, 6:29 pmRichards really struggling.
Even if he gets out of this with just 1 run his pitch count is crazy high already.
Looks like the bullpen will be relied on heavily....not a good thought.

Quote from fenn68 on August 21, 2020, 7:01 pmGuerra warming up in the 2nd ... even if Richards gets out of this his pitch count should get him pulled ... 60ish may not seem over taxing but when it reflects two hard innings it has a bigger toll.
