PADRES VS. ASTROS
Quote from fenn68 on August 21, 2020, 8:31 pmDon’t get the pulling of Strahm .... only 9 pitches and two weak hitters in Taylor and Straw coming up. Strahm doesn’t have a big problem with RHH.
Save Stammen for the 7th and save some pitches in his arm to go longer into the game if needed. Perdomo probably now is the 7th-8th inning option with Quantrill to close? Pagan maybe but he had 16 pitches yesterday ... but was rested on Wednesday.
Better score a few more runs.

His value is in the chance he becomes a dominant reliever.
He has no track record so won’t have much value as a trade piece and should only get better and is inexpensive.
Just not sure how you hide him next year with 26 man instead of 28
Why do we need to hide him?
You use him in the bullpen.
Agree, the 8th man in the pen if he looks as he is still developing could work but with a month to go ... some offseason work ... next ST ... his command may just improve enough to warrant a bigger role.
Doubt they trade his potential this winter. Yates gone ... likely Perdomo gone ... and possible Johnson and / or Stammen gone in trades before Guerra. Castillo should be back and, maybe, Munoz if he fully rebounds.
Who knows about Pagan .... so have to gamble on Guerra making the next step to a plus late inning arm ... maybe even closer. If he doesn’t ... still a useful role in 2021. No givens in the 2021 pen from the right side.

We need to score a couple more me thinks.

Quote from 84padres on August 21, 2020, 9:40 pmI can't bear to watch the 9th.
The bullpen is being held together with ductape and chicken wire. BUT the wins all count the same at the end. Real gutty effort by the pen tonight

Quote from LynchMob on August 21, 2020, 10:26 pmA very unlikely win ... sweet! 🙂
"Play of the Game" should go to Richards for getting the 3rd out with bases loaded ... 2 to choose from (1st inning or 2nd inning) 🙂
Has Manny been listening to coaches? His approach at the plate has been GOOD lately!

Quote from Randy Manese on August 21, 2020, 10:54 pmWe did have a chance for that 5th granny but Hosmer hit it off the pitcher's glove and Correa made an excellent play. Emotional roller coaster again, but everyone kept fighting despite errors and a dropped transfer for a double play (2nd time Cronenworth has done that and I believe Tatis Jr. also had one transfer flub - not an error because can't assume a double play). Great clutch hits by Machado and Cronenworth and a good game by Grisham to keep the line moving.
Really need Davies to go 6 or 7 (but we also needed Richards to do that today!) so we don't have to bring in Perdomo or Baez too early. We should be able to get runners on against Bielak so we'll again need some clutch hitting. Don't know why, but I've got a feeling Naylor is going to have a good game against Bielak - let's play the game. Go Padres!

Quote from Ben Davey on August 22, 2020, 12:38 amI'm guessing the logic for pulling Strahm is that he is probably your #1 reliever right now. 9 pitch inning means he is definitely able to go back out tomorrow to either close or in high leverage.
Davies going 7 tomorrow would be ideal, but what if he only goes 6. Lets say its similar to tonight. Padres up by two after 6, who do we have 7/8/9? My guess is Johnson 7th, and then some combo of Hill, Strahm, Pagan for the final 2 innings.
I dont mind the move, but I agree with some of you that Tingler is trying to play 3D chess when the Padres are playing checkers. Right now the idea of being able to use Strahm tomorrow is great, but in the moment, I would use him for 2-3 innings and worry about tomorrow, tomorrow.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 22, 2020, 5:52 amI’m thinking Hill is going to have to assume a larger roll.
We can’t afford to use him only in the modified loogy roll any longer.
He’s been effective and needs to be able to go 2 innings if necessary from here on out.
