Padres Trade Talk

Anyone hearing any rumblings about possible deals?  Definately need another starter capable of starting a playoff game after Cease and King.  Flaherty is a possibility, but at what cost?  For sure not Salas or DeVries.  Other than that, anyone can go imo.  Go AJ & Staff and Go Pads!

Saw the speculation on Flaherty … “rental” and the Padres would only pick up about $5MM in 2024. He has been very good for DET and his contract fits both the 2024 and 2025 payroll constraints for the Padres. Add that “rentals” don’t normally command elite prospects in return … so Salas and DeVries are likely not in play.

Agree that after those two … Padres can be very flexible on the package but the question is what DET might get from others.

Flaherty sure seems like a good fit … so Preller may go “a little extra” to land him. Other than Flaherty and Snell (complicated) … not heard any other rumors … SP/RP/or hitter.

Flaherty just got scratched from his start tonight. Sounds like a deal could be coming soon. No word on where he's headed yet.

Flaherty has good numbers bit he has lower back issues and take shots for it. He is a risk of being on the IL I think the Padres should pass on him.

Depends on the prospects going in the trade … salary is a non-issue. Not sure there are any better alternatives if you consider the cost in prospects / salary commitment … and right now pitching as well.

The gamble vs the #5 SP being Mazur.

Feels pretty silly to say this after a single game, but nevertheless, Vasquez's misfire yesterday reminded us all why we need some insurance in the rotation. Mark that with the uncertainty surrounding Musgrove (and especially Darvish) along with the open question of Michael King's innings, and a rotation add pretty much becomes a must.

It'd be nice to add another reliever and a 4th OF, but that might drain out system completely.

No idea if this is a factor in anyway but Flaherty was on the staff at STL when Shildt was the manager.

So, to some degree Shildt has a view on Flaherty's ability to contribute ... but in an unrelated interview Shildt said he does give some of his thoughts to Preller ... but relies on Preller to make the calls. Does not sound as though Shildt is that deep into the decision making on trades.

White Sox and former Padre Tommy Pham, was traded to the Cardinals.

So the question I have is this;

Everybody wants a starting pitcher so do the Padres make a play for Flaherty and give up an Adam Mazur or other pitching to get a 2 month rental ? I think that we gave up Bednar in that disastrous Adam Frazer trade and so many other pitchers have been moved for little return. Getting the guy from Tampa Bay (Jason Adam)cost a high rated minor league pitcher (Lesko) who seemed to have regressed but still young. Adam works because of team control for another two years but giving up young pitchers for a rental is another story…I really hate dealing away the future for a rental and given the Padres payroll restrictions they would not be in a position to extend Flaherty after this season…is he really the guy that gets us into the playoffs and beyond ?

Just curious what you all think about that?

We all hate theoretically dealing away the future for a rental but in most cases you have to capitalize on those few opportunities your team may have to get into the playoffs when they arise.  It's been discussed in this forum that this year and possibly next may be the best short term opportunities for the Padres to make the playoffs given salary (CBT) structure, age of players, free agency, etc.  For those reasons, if you can give up a minor league asset (maybe not just our top minor league assets like Salas or DeVries) for someone like Flaherty, you go ahead and do it.

Further, the probability that many of these minor league players will, 3 or 4 years from now, have any impact on a team going for a playoff spot is likely very low.  Many top out at AA, many get injured and few really reach the levels we thought they might rise to.  So, gotta strike when the opportunity presents itself even though it hurts at the time (I really had high hopes for Lesko!).

The Athletic just dropped a piece from Keith Law on the Adam trade. He's got both eyebrows raised as to the cost we paid, and I have to say, so do I. I am blown away it cost us all three of those prospects to pry away Adam, even considering how controllable he is. I'm especially bummed about Lesko. I know we have to give up quality to get it in return, but man... it sure seems like a lot.
