Padres Trade Talk
Quote from Jeremy Hill on July 26, 2024, 3:37 pmSnell would be interesting. The Athletic had an article that talked about him and The Giants deadline plans the other day. From what it says 17m of his salary for this year comes in the form of a non-transferable signing bonus due in 2026. The Giants have to pay it. His actual salary is only 15m. He would cost less than 5m the rest of the way. Like you said the option might be the real issue. If everyone is healthy next year's rotation looks pretty set. If he pitches well down the stretch he probably lots out. I would want the Giants to agree to pay a significant portion of his salary if he picks up the option. I don't know if that's something they'll want to do. They also may not want to help out a division rival. I would love to have him back for the rest of the year. I'm not sure how feasible that would be though.

Quote from fenn68 on July 26, 2024, 4:18 pmApparently a number of teams have inquired about Snell … so the “winner” will likely pay a decent price … probably with quality prospects.
Not much value for the Giants to trade Snell … eat the bonus money and buy down the 2025 salary if he opts in. “Save” only about $5MM in 2024 and some amount in 2025. Just wait until the winter to see if Snell opts out at a cost of only $5MM. If he opts in then pursue a trade if they don’t want him. If Snell remains hot the rest of the season … good chance he opt out and if he does not … still would be in demand on a one year deal and yield a decent return for the Giants.
From the Giants point of view they probably will hold out for a team just to take Snell and his remaining contract obligations (put the opt out/in risk on the buyer).
Given the Padres “current team”, if it returns (resigning Profar, Kim, Higashioka … and the arbitration decisions for Cease, King, Arraez) will put them probably $20MM OVER the CBT … then add Snell CBT opt in number … that just is not going to happen.
At this point not sure a front line SP (at what that will cost) is a priority if Musgrove and/or Darvish return … with Cease, King, Waldron, and Vasquez (all returning in 2025). Maybe a back end SP/long RP. More likely a “better” set of RP adds and maybe an OF.
Only so much wiggle room with payroll and limited trade chips.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on July 26, 2024, 9:57 pmUnless they think they can make up enough ground to make the playoffs there's no reason for the Giants to keep Snell. If they do he either pitches well enough to opt out and leaves them with nothing or he doesn't and they're stuck paying him 15m next year plus another 15m in deferred money in 2027. In that scenario it's hard to believe anyone would give up anything of significance to get him.
The Giants may be able to find someone to take him without any contingencies. Taking on some risk and allowing some would probably help them maximize their return. It could just be a case of deciding what their priority is.
I'm not too worried about salary with regards to the deadline. I think we can comfortably take on 10m+ without worrying about the luxury tax. Every day that Darvish is away pushes it up a little more. I'm sure AJ will try for a front line starter. He may have to settle for less. I think he'll be limited more by the lack of availability and prospect price than he will be by salary.

Quote from fenn68 on July 27, 2024, 4:04 amAgree that the 2024 salary component of any add should not be an issue for the Padres.
The limited number of quality trade chips (vs what other teams could offer), the CBT / payroll issue for 2025, and simply the limited number of quality trade targets will combine will make it difficult for the Padres to make a “major” deal.
I am OK with that assuming Tatis and Musgrove are returning (and maybe Darvish). Focus probably will be on RP (maybe a #5 SP / long RP option). Also, a better 4th OF option. Likely a focus on “rentals” … probably don’t have the prospects to land a “quality” low cost, long control option … and frankly don’t think they need to with this team.
Given recent trade deadline moves … have not seen much success from those adds, so the idea may exceed reality. Adam Frazier, Ryan Ludwick,, et al have not boost the Padres to the World Series … neither did Soto / Bell.

Quote from fenn68 on July 28, 2024, 7:48 amPadres make their 1st deal of the season:
Padres add Jason Adam from TB (RHRP) for a pretty big return: Lesko, Bush, plus one more prospect.
Adam is turning 33 but is controlled in 2025 and 2026. Sitting with just a $2.7MM salary (padres will pick up less than $1MM this year. So fits Preller’s low cost / long control profile of a target.
Now Adam is more a set-up guy but has closed … carrying a 2.42 ERA in 2024 and a career 3.07 …
I guess the push to win in 2024-25 … Lesko has not been as expected and Bush more a 4th OF type … both a few years away (if ever).

Steep price but I like it for what the team needs now. Cue the Kolek mystery injury...

Quote from brent wolff on July 29, 2024, 10:30 amAnyone hearing any rumblings about possible deals? Definately need another starter capable of starting a playoff game after Cease and King. Flaherty is a possibility, but at what cost? I wouldn't mind Tyler Anderson from LAA, to have a lefty in the rotation, but again what will be the cost? I'm in the not Blake Snell camp simply because of he could do his player option for $31 million next year. For sure do not give up either Salas or DeVries for a SP. Other than that, anyone can go imo. Go AJ & Staff and Go Pads!
