Padres Trade Talk
Quote from ultratvfan on July 9, 2024, 9:15 pmThe July 30 trade deadline is nearing. This is one of those times of the year that makes my nervous because I always worry what the Padres would lose. I would not touch the offense, except Johnson, and I would be open to trading Vasquez and either Wandy Peralta or De la Santos. Estrada, Suarez, and Morejon are some of the pitchers that should not be traded.
The Padres, as well as the Dodgers, have been looking at the possibility of acquiring White Sox starting LHP Garrett Crochet, who has a 3.08 ERA, 146 K and Marlins LHP reliever Tanner Scott, who has 1.42 ERA. Both would be expensive, but good, solid additions.
I wonder if it would be possible to pry Tarik Skubal, 2.37 ERA, 110 K, .195 BAA, from the Tigers.
Does anyone know if Crochet, Scott, or Skubal are Boras clients?

Quote from fenn68 on July 10, 2024, 3:29 amI can think on the quality players that the Padres would benefit from adding but hit a roadblock when trying to identity Padre prospects that other teams would covet (above what other teams will offer). That is a problem.
Despite reputation / projections, the Padres top 5 prospects struggling this year … Salas, Snelling, Lesko, DeVries, and Mazur … and three are a long way off in A/A+ leagues. Not the set=up to induce a team to trade a quality ML player over what should be better offers from other clubs.
Preller will have a challenge getting a top quality ML player at the deadline unless he “overpays” with a top prospect for a “rental”.

Quote from fenn68 on July 24, 2024, 7:41 amOne week for Preller to sort out the trade deadline plan. Given the post All-Star start and the tight Wild Card race (along with Preller’s history) … a good chance the Padres will be a buyer (but maybe not a high profile add).
First he has to make a call on the returns (timing / effectiveness) of Musgrove, Darvish, and Tatis.
Secondly, determine his comfort level that King (innings limit?) or Waldron (second time around vs some teams will lead to diminished effectiveness?) or Vasquez (hot or turned the corner?) will continue to be effective.
Along with a need to boost the pen … SP is a set of unknowns. If one of Musgrove or Darvish return soon and effectively with the current SP continuing to produce, no need to add a SP as a priority. If both, someone goes to the pen to help there. What does Preller know (believe) and that may alter how aggressively he pursues a SP.
Factor in a thin farm system past Salas, DeVries … so not likely enough to tab the very high profile adds. Maybe more likely target RP … should be lower requirement for trade chips.
While the focus seems to be on pitching … Preller may back door the market and go for an OF even if Tatis is returning but that is lagging to the end of August. A replacement for the Peralta / Johnson backfill for Tatis for the next month +/- would be welcomed. Plus if a RHH would help the performance vs. LHP either in RF or DH.
Given the market were every contender is seeking one (or two) SP … and too few SP apparently being on the market … the price will likely out of the Padres range of quality trade chips. So, if Preller reads the tea leaves that way … expect a set of moves for RP and an OF.

Quote from BoosterSD on July 24, 2024, 10:04 amI see a trade for Kirby Yates to help shorten games, he is dealing this year. Then I think his big move is going to be Skubal and Canha from DET.
Crochet is in the same basket as some of SD current SPs, in the fact that they are approaching max innings of their careers. Although Skubal with his injury past, may have innings limitations as well.
Cease and Skubal will do you well in a playoff series.

I get what you are saying, and dont disagree with it either. However, since I think that Preller might have a short leash on keeping his job, I see him doing whatever he can to win this year.

I could see Yates … also could see Canha.
Don’t think they have the trade chips to get Skubal who may be the top pitcher available with a low salary and controlled in 2025 and 2026. He would be pushing a Soto level package since DET does not need to trade him. BALT and LAD can outbid the Padres … maybe others.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 24, 2024, 10:42 amInstead of a huge deal for Crochet/Robert that will "empty the farm" (again) I'd prefer a much smaller deal for Fedde/Pham.
As long as Pham isn't a real detriment in the Clubhouse he makes a good 4th OF bat off the bench and this would not cost us Salas or DeVries.
KEEP DeVries at all costs

I don’t think Preller has a free rein to make any deal he wants … think the new ownership is different than Peter Siedler and has a different agenda for running this team. Anything big will have to be approved by Eric K … and maybe that will not be so easy if it means spending more money or stripping the remaining top prospects.
Think Preller is OK with this ownership until his contract ends after 2026 … maybe dropped after 2025 IF 2024 and 2025 fail to make the playoffs. The team is still built to win in 2024-25 but after 2025 scheduled to be gone will be Profar, Kim, Higashioka, King, Cease, Suarez (opt out), Arraez. So might sit on the ownership decision on a total rebuild in 2026 and who do they want to engineer that.

Quote from dusty on July 25, 2024, 10:54 amA little bit out of the box but what do you think the Giants would do to get someone to take Snell? Do they simply want to unload him? He has pitched much better in the 3 games since but would they be willing to pay much of the remaining salary to get someone to take him? I'm sure Preller has at least made a call. But imagine being able to pry him away for "peanuts." The option could be a potential obstacle
