Padres at Giants
Quote from BoosterSD on July 29, 2020, 7:29 pmSome bad defense in the 2nd inning. They call it an earned run, but I believe it was an error on Grisham, Paddack should have caught that ball, and Garcia butchered the foul ball.

I KNEW something bad was going to happen with 2 on 2 out with Stammen; just didn't have his usual control. BLATANTLY obvious to take him out there. I get it in a 162 game season, but you can't fart around with the series win in a 60 game season; HAVE to play like it's the playoffs--lock it up & go with lesser Pitchers tomorrow in the sweep game IF the opportunity even presents itself. This one REALLY hurts.

Quote from Randy Manese on July 29, 2020, 11:08 pmI was hoping for Perdomo because he is more of a ground ball pitcher than Stammen and had a nice earlier outing. At least Tingler didn't waste Yates, but this one is a difficult loss. We'll see how they bounce back from adversity tomorrow. Hedges continues to be a black hole in the line-up. Cronenworth looked a little overmatched but Olivares had a great game. We need to have one full game where we don't quit hitting after getting the lead. The Sheriff didn't have his best stuff but battled and should have had the win.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 30, 2020, 5:12 amI was not happy when we resigned Stammen as I remember way to many nights last season going to bed upset that he blew a lead.
Everyone said he was just over used and is fine....that was not fine.
Someone let Tingler know he can't use him like the workhorse he used to be.
He just isn't the same pitcher he was 2-3 years ago.

Quote from fenn68 on July 30, 2020, 5:51 amWith all the extra arms in the pen ... and with the game at risk seeing Stammen’s lack of control ... would have expected Stammen pulled before he yielded the HR. (Agree that Stammen has reached his “use by” date).
On the plus side, Olivares looks to be carving out more playing time with some strong ABs. Same goes for Cronenworth even if he did not get a hit ... he didn’t seem overmatched when hitting working the count and some solid contact. Grisham’s bat seems solid.
Did find it curious that when they had to pull Hosmer from the line-up (ill again) they slid Cronenworth to 1B and inserted Garcia at 2B. Would have thought Naylor would have been the 1st option for 1B. They probably were committed to give Profar a day off so went with Garcia ... who they may also wanted to get some playing time.

Quote from Brian Connelly on July 30, 2020, 7:50 amI missed the early bad defense, but it was UTTERLY inexcusable for Tatis to get picked off by the "almost balk" LHP after Olivares just was. 2 outs already, who knows what happens, but come on... that's bad on him & the 1B coach.

Quote from Brian Connelly on July 30, 2020, 8:23 amIt's always easy to second guess RP use when they have a disastrously bad night, but this is a perfect example of why I don't like having 16 freaking Pitchers active... WHYYYYY in a 60 game season-- where every game is a playoff game-- are you taking the approach that RP's have to only pitch every other day?!?!?! I'm convinced it's simply because it's "possible" to do so with 11 RP's! You can't "make" the games work out that way to alternate who you want, when you want. All RP know & are used to that. What if we'd won & then never had a need to use Pom or Pagan for the next 4 games? Those guys are there FOR these situations! How many times have we heard "it's a sprint", but Tingler is managing like it's a "normal" season.
Trying to thread the needle by going with maybe the 4th best guy in the pen with a 3 run lead in bottom of 8th instead of your 2nd best guy is bad enough, but it was egregiously bad to STAY with Stammen on an obvious off night with 2 on, 2 out. Could have used ANY of the top 3 RP's at that point to get out of the jam, and didn't? I literally just don't get the strategy. Sidebar: could also argue Bednar was "forced" into the game when he appeared & promptly gave up a HR too due to # of RP's.
Tingler/Pads perversely actually almost got lucky in a way that by losing on the walkoff, the game didn't go to extra innings & burn through more RP's heading into Colorado next. We had a 3 run lead in the 8th vs their best P despite a shaky non-ideal lineup, only GIDP & K's from Hedges, bad defense early, and bad baserunning/coaching late. HAVE to go "All In" for that win. If it leads to your top 3 pen guys not being available today, that's OK. We're still in a good position to win the series, but hard to imagine this one being topped in the "if we'd only won that one" category at year end...

Quote from Brian Connelly on July 30, 2020, 8:42 amJust to stop stewing I'll make the lineup:
Tatis, Machado, Pham, Profar, Myers, France (1B), Mejia (DH), Hedges, Grisham
If Hosmer can go, 1B batting 6th, push France & Mejia down & to DH, C respectively, Hedges out. But would rather have Hosmer full go in Colorado. Wouldn't DH him here. Off bench into game later?
