PADRES AT COLO

If we are already in a bullpen day and it goes badly, then Pomeranz probably will not get in the game.  If the game goes very well and we get a good lead, then Pomeranz again will probably not get in the game.  If the game is very close, is it beneficial to try to win this one for the "guaranteed" split in the series of save Pomeranz for games 3 or 4 (don't see him going back to back after coming off an injury).  My guess is that they don't activate him until tomorrow and then send either Perdomo or Baez or Morejon (if he gets bombed) down.  This is a tough call because we don't know what we'll get out of Paddack and who pitches the last game against Colorado - Richards?

Really tough call, but Pagan pitched yesterday.  Who would you put in the game in the 8th-9th inning with even a 3 run lead in Colorado?  Having to play a doubleheader before a next day road game in Colorado was definitely rough... had no choice but to go to Bednar when the game was still close in the 5th/6th inning to get the IP from him as the extra guy.

In my mind, you have to have Pom up, Patino down b/c he is the least likely of: he, Perdomo, & Baez to give you the length you're going to need during the 3 games, and you definitely can't put him in late to protect a lead; need Pom today for hopefully even 1+ IP...

Trying to out think the RP issue ... clearly want Pomeranz back (if fully healthy) to close down a win. That sends someone out on a 10 day option. Then SAT-SUN-MON there is a good chance at least one RP gets over worked and needs to be sent down on a 10 day option with a recall of maybe Bednar.

Day of rest helps but then a string of 15 games. The two optioned players would miss the road games with LAA and OAK with the first optioned eligible to return at home in the COLO series (maybe to replace Bednar).

So, might they look at the match-ups vs LAA and Oakland to determine who is optioned in both cases ... and then who matches up best with COLO and have that arm be optioned first?

Might also factor in the starting rotation set up ... Morejon today and a bullpen day on Monday then an off day. That should set up a “rested” starting rotation for the road trip and into the COLO series. That might make them lean to optioning a starting option first.

Three dimensional chess.

Well with Pomeranz and Rosenthal joining the active roster in COLO .... the plot thickens on which players are optioned.

Morejon just placed on the 10 day injured list!

Pomeranz activated ... Morejon to the IL ... Baez listed as the starter tonight.

Baez was going to go anyway, which now means we'll probably see a lot of Patino and possibly Strahm, in a longer role.  Unless it gets ugly, don't expect Perdomo, but the usual suspects - Stammen, Johnson, Guerra and Hill all should be available.  Don't think Quantrill or Pagan are.  Pomeranz in only if it meaningful, i.e, save opportunity.

Morejon just can't stay healthy!  Hard to keep a guy rostered who comes up lame on the day of his start.  Good luck Padres!

Kevin Acee:
Jayce Tingler said he can't elaborate on why Adrián Morejon is on the IL. Said there is confidence he'll be back in a few days and that the team is confident no one else on team has reason to be concerned.

Sounds like a precautionary move if Morejon has "symptoms" of COVID that need to be tested / cleared. The "can't elaborate" is consistent with the COVID needing player's consent.

Any chance he’s part of a deal for Lynn and this is a way to keep him from pitching until completed?

Could have just optioned him to achieve that.

However IF it is the COVID IL ... there is no minimum or maximum timeframe for a player to be on it. So, Morejon could be back on Monday pitching vs COLO, I guess ... or someone else.

Not suggesting anything questionable BUT the next three game starters were scheduled to be:

Morejon - Paddack - TBD (bullpen day) , now

Baez - Paddack - TBD

IF Baez was going to be the player sent down for Pomeranz but the Padres wanted to cover tonight and Monday ... run Baez out tonight .... option him when Rosenthal arrives ... Morejon quickly recovers for the start on Monday and they option a piece out of the pen. Padres seem to want to run with Morejon as the starting option (for now) over Patino or Quantrill.

All this presumes no other deals involving any 28 man roster pitchers coming before the deadline.
