PADRES AT COLO
Quote from fenn68 on August 29, 2020, 6:06 amQuote from hoffy51 on August 29, 2020, 4:58 amThey can say it's a bullpen day, but Morejon is always the starter. I believe the Padres think that he is further along at this point more than either Patino or Gore. They would like him to go 4 or 5 innings today, and then gradually stretch it out to 6 or 7 as the season progresses. THEN the bullpen can take over.
They really need to have Morejon go longer and avoid as much bullpen as possible today. Same with Paddack on Sunday. Neither are likely to go more than 5-6 so RP will be used but the pen not depleted so cover the bullpen day / taxi squad starter on Monday. Hard to do at COORS.
Wonder if some pitcher gets to be the sacrificial lamb if the game goes badly early to save the pen? Just leave him out there to get pounded ... then optioned.

Quote from fenn68 on August 29, 2020, 6:17 amMaybe being lost in the detail is the Padres in the bigger picture. They now have the 2nd best record in the entire NL!
1. .705 (24-10) ... LAD #1 in NL WEST
2. .588 (20-14) ... PADRES
3. .581 (18-13) ... ATL #1 in NL EAST
4. .581 (18-13) ... CUBS #1 in NL CENTRAL
Note that COLO is #3 in the NL WEST at .500 (16-16).
Padres have 26 games to go ... and looking at that “loss column” ... one prolonged losing streak still can be a disaster ... so, not to get over confident.
Padres have weaknesses ... but ... 13 of the other NL teams might have more issues.

I love that Strahm didn't want to be taken out but Story was coming up and at that point in the game, momentum could have turned around. Grisham having a very difficult time hitting lefties but who else could we put at the top of the line-up against lefties? Go back to Tatis? Nice that Mateo had a good game but that's just one good game at Coors - can't stick him up there. Obtain someone in a trade?
Grisham has a poor .205 OBP vs LHP ... not good for a lead-off guy.
Might consider Cronenworth ... yes, LHH but has a .385 OBP vs LHP. However, might be more important hitting down the line-up where he is driving in runs.
Might consider Profar (playing LF) ... has a .314 OBP vs LHP. Drop Grisham to the bottom 1/3rd or give him a break and “try” Mateo in CF.
Reluctant to move Tatis back to lead-off .... the production coming out of Tatis-Machado-Hosmer-France-Myers in 2-6 is compelling and would not want to start juggling line-ups ... never liked that strategy under Green (or anyone).
Trade for a RHH OF (who can hit LHP) sure ... just no idea who (that is good) is on the market.

Quote from fenn68 on August 29, 2020, 8:39 amPomeranz is eligible to come off the IL today ... no word either way. (would guess Baez is optioned if/when that happens).
=====
Any word on Mejia? He was eligible to come off the IL on the 26th. Had a "thumb contusion" ... no word on the seriousness and whether that impacts his throwing or hitting or both.

It sounds like Pomeranz will be activated today. I hate optioning the "length" of Baez (who was effective his last outing) on a bullpen game day before it's been "used". Could be Perdomo who threw 40+ pitches the 2nd game of Seattle doubleheader, but he was also really effective & could go long Sun or Mon; likely to be needed. My personal choice would be Patino. He doesn't really have a defined role, has flashed but has been erratic, but most importantly, he's no longer really "stretched out"; think it would benefit he & Pads in short, medium, & long run to send him back to the Alternate site and start stretching out again. COULD gamble & wait 1 more day to activate Pomeranz, then option someone after going long today, but risky if Pom's really 100%; could pitch 2 of the 3 remaining games IF activated today.
It was announced Mejia is at Alt site getting lots of AB's, but still having issues with the thumb when hitting. Rivas is on the taxi squad this trip. Mejia maybe back Sept 2nd after off day? Really no hurry. Better to make sure he's 100% healthy & gets in a little bit of a groove hitting.

Yes!! And the Cubs are "only" +2 Run differential & expected record of 16-15... meaning they've been a little lucky. (Pads too @ 19-15).... Only 4 "good" teams in the NL, and the Cubs are only marginally "good". But only 1 really bad team (Pitt) in NL. I fully expect some of the many "in the middle" teams to get hot & start rising... but the math / low # of games left works against them... if 2-3 teams get hot, SOMEone is losing to them. Nothing certain, and Pads have been streaky, but in a really good position in the relatively weak NL.
AL has more "good" and "bad" teams; few in the middle.

I'd go with Profar leadoff vs LHP and drop Grisham to probably 6th or 7th. Don't LOVE it, but Profar does see a lot of pitches, which is important. They were doing this early in the year.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 29, 2020, 10:02 amIf we are already in a bullpen day and it goes badly, then Pomeranz probably will not get in the game. If the game goes very well and we get a good lead, then Pomeranz again will probably not get in the game. If the game is very close, is it beneficial to try to win this one for the "guaranteed" split in the series of save Pomeranz for games 3 or 4 (don't see him going back to back after coming off an injury). My guess is that they don't activate him until tomorrow and then send either Perdomo or Baez or Morejon (if he gets bombed) down. This is a tough call because we don't know what we'll get out of Paddack and who pitches the last game against Colorado - Richards?

Quote from fenn68 on August 29, 2020, 10:06 amThanks on the Mejia update ... agree no hurry.
Baez / Perdomo probably the two first choices to be optioned ... guessing they want to keep Patino around relief now and maybe stretched out soon. If the Padres waited until Sunday ... Morejon may become the choice.
Somehow they need to consider if any pending trade discussions could impact any move.
Then the wild card ... Guerra or Stammen come up with a strained oblique or calf and head to the IL.
Could go a lot of ways and have to survive three more games in COLO ... then day off ... then a long run. One plan to finish off COLO and a different mix for the 2 week consecutive game run that follows?
