Quote from TarheelPadre on February 18, 2019, 2:52 pmIs Machado a difference maker with this current roster, no. Could he be in a few years when the young bucks make their way to the show, sure. I think both Machado and Harper offer a lot to a franchise that needs some eyeballs on it. They will put fans in the stands and create some excitement that will push ownership to keep making moves to improve.
Hopefully we will see some movement here shortly.

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 19, 2019, 7:56 amI'm gonna assume if Machado was to stay healthy and play to his current level that in 3-4 years he would still be tradeable even with a $35 mil per season contract?
I would think by then other players,ie;Trout,Betts, would be making the same or more?
So just because we sign him to a 9 year deal doesn't mean we are completely stuck with him if we choose not to be......right?
I have to believe this plays into the thinking(if you can call it that) of the Padres offering this kind of deal.

Quote from fenn68 on February 19, 2019, 9:38 amThe Padres have agreed to terms on a free agent contract with star infielder Manny Machado, according to ESPN.com’s Jeff Passan (via Twitter). It’s a ten-year, $300MM deal, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand (Twitter link).

Quote from fenn68 on February 19, 2019, 10:39 amIf the Machado deal is just "straight lined" ... payroll would jump to $115MM for each of the next two years ... not sure how much more they have to spend and if they want to spend it NOW or wait to see if they are contending and spend near the trade deadline. Maybe wait until next winter and a better FA crop of SP.
Seems the went high on Machado based on quality, youth, and control. Drop that templet on the remaining FA (or even trade targets) and that does not seem to match.
I would use 2019 to do a sort of the prospect arms to see how should survive for the future and recognize that two of the SP slots next season could go to Richards and Lamet.
About the only SP that might make me rethink is Kluber ... depending on the ask.

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 19, 2019, 11:51 amI think Luchessi is a starter for us going forward as well.
His deceptiveness in his motion makes me think he will only improve as he matures and learns more about "pitching.
So I would say 2020 rotation starts with Luchessi,Lamet and Richards.

Quote from fenn68 on February 19, 2019, 1:44 pmWith what looks like a pretty set line-up for the next 4 years of Hedges - Hosmer - Urias - Tatis - Machado - Myers - Margot - and a RF TBD ... opens up a lot of ML/AAA/AA position player trade chips to bundle with some of the pitching prospects ... objective to add a front line SP preferably in his 20s who is under control for 3+ years.
A position of using a blend of quantity and quality for one premium ML piece.
Position players up for grabs should be Renfroe - Reyes - Cordero - Naylor - Reed - Olivares - Mejia - A.Allen - Potts coupled with the likes of Nix, Quantrill, Avila, Lawson ... and for the right return Baez. Still leaves Paddack, L.Allen, and Morejon to fill out the Padres staff over then next 2-3 seasons.
=======
Long shot might be dealing with Cleveland NOT for Kluber or Bauer but for Mike Clevenger (28, 4 years control, minimum control) who has been very effective. Cleveland needs OF to contend for the next two seasons while keeping the payroll down plus their farm system is not that good.
Equally likely is trolling the non-contenders (e.g. Detroit, KC, Miami, etc) for SP similar to Clevenger .... same strategy of giving the multiple pieces of good quality prospects as a basis for their rebuild.

Quote from Brian Connelly on February 19, 2019, 10:50 pmWith this MEGA move & corresponding shift in expectations... .500+ team with puncher's chance THIS year? (Vegas odds had Pads +8-9 wins this year before Machado)...
.... I don't see how Padres can possibly go into Opening Day with this Pitching Staff. We're all hoping to be wow-ed by Strahm, top prospects, etc, but there is simply too much at stake to take too high a % chance of the wheels coming completely off with this TOO young, inexperienced, & innings limited SP staff. Yes, you don't want to block guys, but there are too many innings to be eaten here where you just need someone reliable to go out, make their start, and give team a chance....
NOT Keuchel & that $/years commitment for an older LHP on a too LH staff.
Solution: Sign Gio Gonzalez to a 1 yr + club option deal. Wouldn't he be roughly 1/5 to 1/10 the cost of Keuchel?

Quote from sportwarrior on February 20, 2019, 6:44 pmThere really aren't enough bullets in all our young arms to safely and effectively mix and match a rotation all year long. Simply put, we need innings and Gio is the most cost effective way to get them. They may not be pretty, but he likely will provide league average performance. We need that kind of stabilizing presence while we wait for elite reinforcements and for our young arms take shape.
