It seems that the LAD might be back in the fray for the services for Harper. From what I have read, the LAD may not be willing to go long term. So if it boils down to PHI, LAD, and SD all offering 10 years, then he signs with LAD. If only SD and PHI offer 10 years then I think that SD wins for the West Coast location. If SD and LAD are even close in AAV even with SD at longer years, then I think that LAD wins. Should be interesting 24-36 hours.

The Harper thing all boils down to how badly he wants to play on the West Coast.

Because if he is willing to take a shorter term deal from the dodgers that would then bring other teams into the

mix who are only out due to his 10 year demand....like SF for instance.

Also even someone like the Cubs or Cards( I know not west coast but) could throw their hats in the ring if he would accept a 3-5 year deal.

So instead of this almost being over this could drag on even longer if he indeed is considering shorter deals.

Maybe less about playing on the West Coast and more about NOT wanting to play in PHIL. All this back and forth maybe be setting up a return to WASH whose owner has a very strong relationship with both Harper and Boras. Last report I saw suggested that the door to resigning Harper might be still open.

Clear that the ask is 10 years + and over $300MM ... guaranteed money is important in what could the once in a lifetime signing. Sort of why the short term big AAV is not getting much of a run in any FA camp.

Keep in mind that Boras has creative contract options with opt outs, no trades, cash flows, and deferred monies ... so is flexible enough to get a long term deal that can be showcased as greater than $300MM.

Two other bits that may be part of the process. One report is that Harper wants to sign with a club that he can have a close "family" relationship with the owner .. apparently he now does with Lerner of the Nats. Not sure on the perception of the ownership of PHIL ... or any of the other contenders. Second, more and more reports are that PHIL will not chase Harper with a deal that exceeds THEIR valuation and that they thought Machado had higher valuation (3B, defense, health additive factors) yet would not push the $300MM tab form the Padres. IF they stay under $300MM (or really try to hard ball Boras) can see him quickly going elsewhere.

All that makes me see WASH ending up with Harper if they want. SD is still in the 1% range if Boras is really creative with the deal and Preller / ownership see the opportunity to move Myers' contract. Cashflow is the key .. so a lower earlier amount bumping up in year 5 and carrying a large chunk of deferred money beyond the 10 year mark would fit. Also, that could put the Padres on a more aggressive path in moving the other corner OF options .... but probably for higher ceiling / low cost options that adding another big contract.

I'm beginning to think I "want" Harper to go to the Dodgers.

Tie up $330 mil on one player who I feel fairly certain will miss significant time due to injury.

Because the alternative is they don't sign him and become more and more financially stable and  able to spend on other players who may fit

their needs better than one outfielder.

With our young SP staff and the probability of monitoring innings for most of the guys, how about a different line of thinking. What about a reunion with Kimbrel? And reducing the load on the SP from the back end forward. If you were to sign Kimbrel, then you could have a 6,7,8,9 of Stock, Yates, Stammen, and Kimbrel on days that we have a lead limiting the SP to 5 innings and only seeing the line up twice. On days where we are behind, you can then bring in long guy like Erlin and a couple other bull pen guys to mop up. I do really like the idea from MrP, where we piggy back Strahm and Paddock.

Kimbrel ?

Pass.....way to much money and he wasn't all that great the last time he was here

You're right, he was horrible in SD the one year. He had a 4 and 2 record with 39 saves in 43 chances for a 90% save percentage and a 2.58 ERA with 87 strike outs to 22 walks. What was I thinking, horrible. I think your standards might be a bit off scale.

Kimbrel is still holding out for a long / big deal (originally 5-6 years at $20MM per) ... way more that even the 2018 Kimbrel in this new evaluation market cannot justify. Saw an analysis of some of his peripheral stats which are deteriorating ... and at his age (turning 31 mid-season) a better chance of future decline rather than rebound. Probably why all the other 29 teams are not making a push to sign him even as contenders needing an end of the game piece. Side note heard some of the local media discussing how Kimbrel did not want to be on the West Coast even when in SD ... said the right things but just was not happy.

Probably nothing will happen with him until he drops his demands and when he does look for Atlanta or PHIL to have the advantage as contenders with money on the East Coast.

Basically not worth it for the Padres to play in that game for a 31 year old RP.

If there's one thing this team has shown it is better than most at it is building a bullpen from "lesser" options.

We seem to have a knack for taking good underappreciated pitchers and making them high valued commodities.

I really don't think AJ will spend big on a reliever....even a top Closer.

Unless we get the rotation where it needs to be and are contending and we don't consider one of our existing guys Closer material.

Which isn't now.

We have guys like Castillo and Wingenter who I think could be options.

Not even mentioning guys still on the rise in the Org.
