I think Preller may try to add Profar as a first move (open 26 man slot) for the super utility role THEN around the beginning of ST try to sign a legit CF (RHH) reserve OF (like DeShields) at a low price as the FA begin to feel squeezed out of the market. As I suggested before O’Grady can be optioned or Mateo can be DFA.
Money is always an issue so if signing a Profar is the higher priority ... if he signs they go with the lower cost CF reserve but if the can’t sign Profar they up that ante to the CF reserve option.
Just not a ton of good options and the differences among them is not so great for a bench piece to chase any one option.
Note: with the Springer signing in Toronto .... the market for Bradley and Pillar (the two best CF options in FA now) has increased with a number of teams still seeking starters.

Not kidding.
Did you notice the year he had in 2019 with the Yankees?
240 AB's with a .364 OBP and 11 bombs.
He's 34 and would probably cost a bit under 1.0 mil
Can he sill field?
That is a possibility ... recognizing his CF skills are diminished but probably serviceable in short fill-ins and most now list him as a corner OF.
Probably a $1.5MM signing (but if they DFA Mateo or O'Grady only a "net" $1MMish).
His experience, time with playoff contenders, and probably an acceptance of a bench role at this stage of his career seems like a good fit for a bench player on a contender. As I recall, he was a positive team player (could be wrong) and that is important for the Padres.

Quote from BoosterSD on January 20, 2021, 7:32 amIn that instance, I would DFA Mateo and hope that he slides through and keep O'Grady. Of course, the perfect scenario would be Maybin taking a MiL deal with an invite to ST, and then see how his defense in CF is, and then try and slide Mateo through towards the end of ST.
I would love to Maybin back in a SD uni.

Quote from fenn68 on January 20, 2021, 7:40 amQuote from Ben Davey on January 19, 2021, 11:19 pmI would venture to guess Morejon is the 6th starter. Honestly, given the injury history of almost the entire staff (and the ineffectiveness of Paddack) its a pretty reasonable idea IF they are held to no limitations.
It was pointed out that one of the biggest reasons for the Dodgers success was not having to worry about the regular season. Kershaw missed a month injured, no big deal. The Padres are now in the boat that if Lamet or someone goes down with an injury the goal will just be to make sure they are back in September because we can win enough with the other starters to make the playoffs.
Agree Morejon probably has the inside track on the 6th starter role .... not sure if the Padres would prefer to begin with him in the minors ... being stretched out as a SP ... then called up as needed OR start in the ML as the long RP.
At some point the Padres may need to develop Morejon as the SP given his potential and IF one of the 5 SP goes down they may want someone conditioned to start to step in. 2 inning stints in the pen will not do it.
As someone suggested before .... signing someone like McHugh (if not him) might still be a possibility. A veteran who has the history of starting and relief. Don't really see any of the current RP options filling that role (except Strahm and that has not worked in the past). Plus given most of the RP have no options ... so calling up a 6th SP as needed will be a problem.

I am still pissed at Maybin. Before any Padre had hit for the cycle, he was a double short of the cycle on his last at bat. He hit a ball in the gap to the fence AND STOPPED AT FIRST BASE BECAUSE HE "DID'NT WANT TO SHOW ANYONE UP!" Uh! Didn't have a CLUE how important that was to the Padres fans and organization. Uh! *&$*(^$%#@

Quote from BoosterSD on January 20, 2021, 9:12 amWith the signing of Brantley and Springer, is there any chance that SD and TOR could work out a deal for Gurriel Jr? I was thinking Grichuk, but not great OBP and is over $10M per year for the next 3 years.

Probably a good chance. Would think the only Padre target would be Gurriel (4 years control and for the next 3 years $5MM or less) ... plus the better all around player. Grichuk has too many hot / cold streaks and really not much of an on-base guy at 3 years and $10MM per ... not a fit and likely not loving a bench role in 2021.
Trade for Gurriel would eliminate the need for Profar (at a cheaper contract) but at the cost of a quality player (or two). Add that Gurriel would be the natural replacement for Pham in 2022 and hold LF for years. If the DH appears in 2021 makes Pham to DH easier while holding a long line-up.
Toronto wants pitching ... SP preferred ... able to pitch in the ML effectively NOW. The Padre match: Paddack for Gurriel. Both have 4 years control ... both remain low cost for the next three years. Pitching is > LF need so maybe a fair match even without debating analytics.
Now convince TOR and hope for the DH in 2021.
=====
Since in 2021 Gurriel would cost less than Profar (or probably any good bench option) ... opens up some more money for another SP at #5 or #6 if Morejon / Gore grab the #5 slot.

I have heard rumor that TOR was also thinking about Realmuto, so they could be in the market for an upgrade at C. IF Campusano is ready, would you think about deal around Nola for Gurriel? Or does that weaken SD catching corp too much?

Like Gurriel but a starting catcher who most seem to think is a plus defensive and maybe a top 10 catcher is too valuable to the Padres’ success in 2021 than a bench piece.
Should note that if TOR trades a major asset it will be for a ML SP which is their greatest need (and I really mean need). Already heard rumblings about talking with CINN (Castillo, Gray) or one of the CLEV quality SP. Not many teams have excess / available top tier pitchers. TOR also has a good farm system so if they have the opportunity to go after a BIG name .... could add to a Gurriel or Grichuk some prospects. Once past Ryu ...not much and the bottom of the rotation is better suited for AAA.
Back to Gurriel ... remember he was mainly an INF when he came up (not a good fielder) and just moved to LF (also not a good fielder). Sort of a more reliable Profar in a sense his offensive history is longer / better. So, when it comes to other teams ... not sure the trade value for a good hitting / poor fielding LF ... at least not for elite SP.
Since I am not sold on Paddack’s future (still a two pitch pitcher) even as a #5 and with a good group of prospects nearby ... would be really appealing to get four low cost years of a RHH bat to offset the departures of Pham (2022), Myers (2023), and the coming of the DH. Reduces the pressure to fill those holes with little near term in the minors.
