You guys have to stop "solving" next year's corner OF opening at the expense of this year's SP already down Clevinger! Makes zero sense to trade a SP out of the rotation in a year we may often go to a 6 man to get a 4th OF who isn't going to play that much.
Dont' HAVE to spend more $ plus trade for another guy if we don't get Profar.
I like the Cameron Maybin idea. He's definitely more of a corner OF this year, but you could start him in CF 20-25 games vs LHP, or a short IL stint & not get killed. Better than moving Wil Myers to CF (NO!). Mateo way faster/more athletic than Maybin at this point, but WAY less experienced in CF & hasn't shown he can hit yet. Doubt O'Grady is "better" in CF than Maybin is even now.

I like the Maybin idea too ... don’t see why signing Maybin for CF precludes adding Profar or Gurriel and just dumping Mateo? Mateo can run ... a one trick pony .... Maybin, Profar, and Gurriel can run.
Even in 2021 ... can insert Kim (for Cronenworth), Maybin (for Grisham), Gurriel (for Myers moving to 1B for Hosmer ... or just for Hosmer). Might be a good line-up vs LHP. Then IF a DH, he provides the best bat as the 9th player in the line-up. 2022-24 is just a value added element.

Just listened to HIGH HEAT who interviewed Larry Rothschild. The normal TV interview comments (nothing surprising).
One interesting comment on Gore ... and something that may impact the ML SP going forward. Rothschild said the Padres have told Gore that “when they deem him ready” for the ML he will not be held back and will get his shot.
”when they deem him ready” is clearly subjective but what happens if that is in ST ... mid-season ... 2022 ... who gets bumped? Padres have consistently held that Gore is a SP not a RP so if to the ML ... a SP.
We may be surprised .... if everyone stays healthy and with Clevinger returning in 2022 ... what Preller may do to make room for Gore.

I agree with Brian.....DO NOT trade anybody out of the starting rotation right now. Paddack was fine with Balsley and was considered to be a top of the rotation talent and then regressed with Rothchild.
I would be more inclined to roll with Paddack and let the younger trio get the innings they need and if ready use Paddack as trade bait at the deadline. AJ Preller even said you can never have enough pitching and he is hedging his bet if he doesn't trade Paddack now as Lamet is still a question mark and all it takes is one "wipe out" slider and it's bingo,bango,bongo...see ya in 2022 or 2023.
Darvish for Davies....SP for SP....no issues......another SP ( Paddack ) for a 3rd/4th OF.....not only NO but HELL NO !

Well, Brantley ends up signing with HOU instead of TOR. So I would guess that Gurriel will probably not even be available now at this time anyway.

As the world turns .... apparently in a last second switch .... Brantley does NOT sign with Toronto and re-signs with Houston (2 years / $32MM).
So we go back to go with:
Darvish - Snell - Lamet - Musgrove - Paddack - and an as needed #6 to begin 2021
Quest for a new bench OF option with Profar taking the best odds and someone like Maybin for CF bumping Mateo

saw a recent note from Cassavell that adding RP is NOT a priority ... looking yes and if something falls into their lap ... great.

Wow! What the #*@$... When I glanced at MLBTR it said "Brantley's a done deal"... didn't notice it was with Astros!
Wonder what happened there or if he was just using Blue Jays to drive up $ with Houston? Anyway, stay in the AL!

Guessing some “insiders” got too far ahead of the story. TOR came out quickly after the first report they signed Brantley stating NO not a deal yet.
Probably TOR had a firm offer and HOU said to Brantley’s agent early in the FA period that they wanted the final shot to top any offer .... they did and he is in HOU.

I have a sneaking suspicion that they are going to bring LAMET along very slowly in ST... and maybe have him initially work out of the Bullpen? I'm looking for someone to take this topic up: Lamet CAN'T replicate the success he had last year over a full season, b/c he threw WAY too many Sliders % wise.... arm didn't really hold up for 12-15 starts, let alone 30 + hopefully playoffs.
But if he decreases his Slider usage too much, what does that do to his effectiveness as a SP? Snell & Musgrove have full SP arsenals of 3-4+ pitches, and Darvish has 17 or whatever.... Is there a chance that we "have" our Closer for 4.2 MM this year (maybe 6-7 MM AAV / 3 years) in Lamet? If he can adapt to getting ready to go more quickly, Lamet would be one of the best closers in MLB on day one I think. Pen could potentially be ridiculous with him, Pom, Pagan, & A. Adams handling late innings. 3 traded for SP's would have to be full health PLUS a rebound from Paddack.
I think the "Morejon & Weathers are moving to pen" talk is really overblown, just like last year's "Gore will be up any day now" was... Weathers wouldn't even be getting mentioned this way if he hadn't made the playoff appearance due to 2 top SP's down. He absolutely should work as a SP in AA. If Morejon is EVER going to really become a SP, it won't be by pitching the 6th inning out of the MLB pen; he simply needs to pitch > 100 IP in a season to show he can actually do it.
Pads still have 11 rostered "true" RP's (not counting the prospects including Baez), and only 2 of them are truly "option-able"; both being LH (Hill & Castillo). 1 of those 2 likely in AAA. That leaves 10 guys we can't/won't option. It simply doesn't make sense to DFA ANOTHER guy at the beginning of a 162 game season just so Morejon or Weathers can be one of the last guys in the pen. It makes more sense that they are available as 6th SP or injury depth as season goes on at RP in the minors.

Tend to agree on the Morejon / Weathers thoughts ... and I would really prefer them starting and building innings in the minors. Padres just may NEED them (along with Gore) starting by mid-season if Lamet does not come back and Paddack just does not return to 2019 form. (Both real possibilities). Would not be surprised to see 8 different SP over the course of the season.
On Lamet, starting he can have a “controlled” warm-up and can have 4-5 days of rest / recovery to minimize issues with the elbow ... that is partially offset with pitching 100 pitches per game. Relief (as a closer) has the problem of getting up multiple days in a row ... limited warm-up ... coming in for a stress inning ... throwing at max out of the blocks. I guess I would worry more about the closer role creating more damage. Even “healthy” closer have a short life spans.
A healthy Lamet ... as a Cy Young candidate has much more value than Closer of the Year candidate ... so I would gamble with the starter role until it is clear he can’t handle it.
