He has been rule 5 eligible for a couple of years ... not selected ... if the Padres need to go to him in 2021 the Padres have a problem. If he was drafted in 2015 ... should become a minor league FA after 2021.

Side observation ... if the NYY traded for him ... suggest they and others put in waiver claims and since the NYY were well down the priority list Reeves may have be the best price any team would put up.

Allen was not the future .... Reeves is not the future ... no harm no foul.

If he's going to be on the shuttle between majors and minors, why not just leave him at Elsinore?

He can hone his craft, get as many innings as needed, get tuition in SD( can any player in the organisation show up at Petco, whenever, and use the facilities, spend time with coaches?) and he's only a short notice, short drive away if needed last minute?

Primarily because he is not that good ... not enough to even be considered a ML piece in 2021 baring a cataclysmic disaster on the Padres roster. If in El Paso, still just a direct flight to SD and he would be better off actually pitching against some better competition.

My guess ... at least early in the season ... no ML team will want more than minimum number of people at their primary facility and avoid players coming from a less controlled environment .... COVID will still be an issue and want no risk their home facility requires a lockdown (or roster player get infected).

Better to have a 27 y.o. LHRP with 3 options than 27 y.o. Allen with no options.  Reeves' #'s in Minors have been very good.   Roughly AVERAGE 2.35 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 10.8 K/9 (holding steady), 3.3 BB/9 (trended worse AA: 4.0), extremely low 0.4 - 0.5 HR/9 rate  in total of 265 IP over 3 years at: A (10 IP), A+ (131), & AA (124).   Looks like 4 years at Citadel, so 10th round Senior sign, automatically "old" for level, but still pretty strong.  Allen's speed, SH, defensive ability to play all 3 OF spots, & experience clearly have some value.

3 options IF they add him to the 40 man roster ... don't think they have (yet). If they don't ... again think he is a minor league FA after the season.

So, somewhat up to him to perform in 2021. Don't really get all that optimistic about a RP successful in AA ... Padres have had lot that fit that profile and disappeared. Hope he is different ... just not going to elevate him to ML quality.

My point was he doesn't have to be on MLB roster like Allen did with no options.  We'll see.  You're probably right.  But always need the LHRP's at the upper levels.  At least they have a few now.  He will be a Minors FA next year

We will know within the hour ... and likely we will see a return to Japan for Sugano BUT apparently the Padres at the last moment returned into the bidding ... bit surprised since the last report had Sugano was holding to $48MM/4 years ($12MM AAV). $12MM was the number from early in the process ... just expected for 2 years and expect the 4 years is the challenge.

I guess IF Preller sees value ... he goes after the guy.

Darvish, Lamet, Snell (L), Sugano, Paddack would be interesting with Gore et. al getting development in 2021.

MIGHT at some level and at some time make Paddack a trade chip for a corner OF in 2022 and beyond.

Not likely to happened .... but

If we sign another top Starter....as opposed to a guy like Hamels,it would make me definitely think they are not expecting Lamet to be healthy enough for Opening day.

A hedge on Lamet sure ... but also a hedge on Paddack just not returning to his 2019 “potential” and a hedge on Gore (or any of the prospects) being ready for a contending team.

Preller would just sign him if they think they good a top player and a fair price ... sort out the pieces later. Plus clearly the Padres are going for the brass ring in 2021-23 ... another top SP just really fortifies the staff.

Arguably a 6 deep upper rotation set of arms will allow for controlling innings over the course of a season (keeping the best fresh for the playoffs) after limited workload in 2020 and should get them the maximum wins (and maybe #1 seed) by not only wining games with the top 3 SP but really cleaning up with wins from the 4th. 5th, and 6th SP.

Sugano remains in Japan as expected.
