Quote from WindsorUK on December 28, 2020, 2:16 pmIf we move Campusano, that leaves us EMPTY at C in the minors( after already moving Mejia, Hunt, Torrens, Allen in other deals in the past 12 months)
Seeing as there is no immediate help in the OF or IF either( unless you rush Abrams?), that leaves us with a handful of pitchers( if AJ doesn't move them!) near the top and nothing else!
We better hope that the guys currently on the MLB roster hold up because we'll have ZERO reinforcements and ZERO money left to fill their void.

Quote from Randy Manese on December 28, 2020, 2:21 pmI hope it is not Morejon and Campy; one of the other would be okay although I'd rather give up Morejon than Campy. Personally, I'd rather sign Sugano and keep the prospects even though Sugano is not at the level of Darvish.
What we have to remember, as painful as it is, is that prospects are just that until they are producers at the major league level. Snell and Darvish and even Willson Contreras are just that. Let's hope we don't overpay - I don't think we did for Snell IF Snell checks out medically although I'm really missing the idea of not having Patino for the mid-2020's and beyond.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 28, 2020, 2:25 pmI am positive Preller was in on Sugano.
Obviously that wasn’t going to happen for one reason or another.
The difference is Free Agents get to choose....he may have chosen to “not” sign with SD or more likely the asking price was too much for an unknown quantity.
Darvish and Snell are proven major league “Cy Young” level starters.
HUGE difference between that and any prospect or unproven player from over seas.
We need guaranteed major league producers at this point especially at the 10-20 mil price tag.

Quote from fenn68 on December 28, 2020, 2:34 pmAfter this wave on major moves on the ML roster ... early next year should see some veteran fringe players signed to minor league contracts for emergency needs. Not ideal but probably functional for 2021.
That may have to be the play for 2022-23 too. Don’t really have a feel for the prospects that were not in full season but could be factors in 3 years. Beyond Abrams ... Hassell - Head - Cassie - Means may be thought of quite highly as OF options ... probably don’t need to worry about INF. No idea the upside of the catchers who were in Rookie ball but Padres do and that may be factored in.
Same sort of goes for the SP ... in 2024 (4 years) gone will be Darvish, Snell, Lamet, Davies, Clevinger and Paddack will be in his walk year. Same issue with not knowing how to project the pitchers not yet in full season (but Padres may have an idea).
2024 might be a bit early to get impact production from the next draft (and the Padres draft late) or the international signings.

Quote from fenn68 on December 28, 2020, 2:45 pmApparently Caratini is Darvish’s “personal catcher” and why he is being included in the speculated deal.
Also, Cubs want some “ML experience” as part of the return ... not sure who the Padres can give although pretty sure if Preller includes Lucchesi and Stammen it is a done deal 😀

Quote from Brian Connelly on December 28, 2020, 3:05 pmGuesses before they announce?
Morejon, Campusano, Lucchesi, Stammen (i.e. 4 MM + 1 MM buyout) and Cubs eat... 6/5/4 MM of Darvish?
Less of a prospect "tail" than Snell, but Darvish way older & Pads taking on way more salary even if Cubs eat 5 MM AAV

Quote from Ben Davey on December 28, 2020, 3:27 pmWindsor, I agree that that would leave us fairly bare when it comes to hitting prospects, BUT...
C Nola FA 2026
1B: Hosmer FA 2026
2B: Kim FA 2025?
SS: Tatis Jr FA 2025
3B: Manny FA 2029
CF: Grisham FA 2026Assuming that Abrams goes to the OF, that leaves virtually no position open for the next four years. By that time Hassell, Head, Preciado and all the other low level prospects will be ready, and we would have had four drafts and Int signings to rebuild the farm.

Sounds pretty close ... might need a Padres’ non-roster mid-range propect (or two) .... someone like Eguy Rosario or one of the vast sea of RP.

Including Stammen 5 MM total + Cubs eating 15 MM would leave Darvish's remaining obligation to Padres almost identical to Snell's : 3/40. So would be apples to apples $ wise. Then just the age difference... still think Cubs motivation to get out from under the $ as they head into a rebuild/turnaround makes trade cost for Darvish lower than Snell.
