Quote from hoffy51 on December 28, 2020, 1:06 pmDarvish is going to make $22 million this next year. First of all, I can't believe we are adding that much salary. But the Cubs seem intent on dumping salary. If that's the case Campusano and Morejon are surely in the deal. Wow. We had better win now. He will be under contract for three more years, same as Snell. It seems like the Padres think they have a three year window and are going for it. I wonder if the Padres has soured on Campusano because of his drug conviction?

By Steve Adams | at
3:04pm: The two teams are nearing agreement “on the multiple pieces” of a Darvish trade, per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. The Pads “have accepted the haul they will have to send to the Cubs,” Acee writes.
2:50pm: Top catching prospect Luis Campusano is among the names that has been discussed, Nightengale reports. His inclusion in the deal would give the Cubs a replacement should they send a catcher to the Padres. Campusano would join Miguel Amaya as a potential long-term option at the position with Contreras up for free agency in two years (if he’s not traded in this or another deal first).

Quote from fenn68 on December 28, 2020, 1:26 pmIf the Padres have “accepted” the package they have to give to the Cubs ... probably down to the financials on Cubs sending money and a final set of physicals.
Sure looks on the verge of getting done.

Quote from fenn68 on December 28, 2020, 1:34 pmApparently Tatis was only the 3rd MLB player to sign a Gatorade deal (Jeter, Harper). Just another indicator of his marketability.
If the Padres want to expand their market beyond the boundaries of SD County and sell more “stuff” ... Tatis is important (see extension) but maybe the signing of Kim (Korea) and a deal for Darvish (Japan) coupled with Tatis’ presence will get the Padres more traction in those countries (for marketing purposes) and maybe an “in” on future prospects.
Getting Kim and Darvish works on their own merits as players ... but a side benefit for the team (and maybe for Tatis).

Quote from WindsorUK on December 28, 2020, 1:34 pmIf we're going for it this year, I'm sure Davies has to be in our rotation.
I'd be happy to move Paddack. Cubs might prefer him as well seeing as he's cheaper, under greater control, and has more "upside".
Please don't move Morejon, Weathers, Baez, Gore - we'll need low cost, viable arms when one of our big guns goes down.
I'm fine with moving on from Pham or even Cronenworth( keep Abrams at 2nd, now that Grisham is GG in CF?)

Quote from Ben Davey on December 28, 2020, 1:45 pmI am just confused how the Padres can afford it unless they are sending them Myers in return.
The problem is, if Myers is part of the deal we are right back in the situation of being weak against LHP.
I also wonder, and just pure speculation, if Campusano is part of the deal, could AJ know something that the Cubs dont regarding his legal trouble? Preller said last week that he has been in contact with Campy's lawyers and is optimistic they will see him when ST starts, but we all know GM speak, so I am less than confident.

Can’t see the Cubs take a big salary player in return ... better chance they just send some money (less than a Myers contract). Plus Myers may not be worth is contract by he was productive in 2020 and has a career that is serviceable. Padres don’t have anything close to replace him ... less if have to worry about Pham’s health. Going to out to get an equivalent player (if possible) will just eat up the money anyway.
You can have too many moving parts.

Quote from fenn68 on December 28, 2020, 2:07 pmSaw a note by Acee that Cronenworth will NOT move to the OF. So,
1. Is he in the Darvish deal?
2. Do the Padres expect the DH and plan on Cronenworth and the four other INF to rotate through the DH position?
3. Do the Padres just recognize they have no other INF bench options worth playing and Cronenworth gets his playing time rotating and needed in all the INF slots?
4. Do the Padres have another deal in the queue using Cronenworth to get a legit back-up OF and potential replacement for Pham next season?
5. (Worst case) ... Padres looked at Cronenworth’s Sept and determined that is more his level than his hot August ... and is best suited as a role player.

Quote from fenn68 on December 28, 2020, 2:10 pmUnconfirmed rumor but one report has Padres getting Darvish and Caratini (C, low cost, 3 years control). Cubs get 4-5 players in return (no names). No comment on money.
