I'd say extremely unlikely. Players don't have incentive to push out their FA further. Especially Pham.
Probably true ... but they have to factor in being a FA after 2021 ... maybe after teams incur more losses with limited fans in the stands and the specter of a work stoppage in 2022 dampening signings next winter and then scrabbling to get a deal once the CBA is signed and the season starts.
A lot depends on how they perform in 2021 but could see Pham have to eat a lower offer in a 2021 / 1 year deal given his age. Davies being a pitcher has a better shot at a market deal.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 15, 2020, 4:44 amSo if you could have either for the same cost for the next 3 seasons would you rather sign Bauer or Ozuna?
IMO we have arms close that could be just fine but who’s playing LF/DH the next three years?
I’d be ecstatic with either one of course.....but Ozunas’ offense is intriguing.
Could you imagine that lineup?
Yes I understand it’s unlikely.....but there are Bauer rumors so.....
Grisham
Tatis
Machado
Ozuna
Pham
Myers
Hosmer
Nola
Cronenworth
Um.......Wow!

Quote from fenn68 on November 15, 2020, 6:21 amOzuna ... not even close given the near term future lacks any OF offense .... Pham a FA after next season (and will be 35 as a FA) ... Myers has only 2 more season (assuming the $20MM option declined). No highly ranked OF on the cusp of the ML (especially with RHH power) coming in the system. Then add the probability of a NL DH in 2022 (or sooner). Major need for RHH offense in the next three years.
Bauer is a luxury on top of a strong stable of arms set up for the next three years. He did not take either Cleveland or Cincinnati to the promise land .... one player doesn’t if there are major weaknesses in the rest of the roster.
Side note ... I have a concern about Bauer on a long term deal anywhere because of his “personality” and if the team under performs. His desire to do everything his way ... pitching schedule, training, etc. Basically it is all about him .... works when winning but not going to be accepted when the team is struggling by teammates who may feel disadvantage (hurting their careers), the manager if he is losing control of the team, and yes the fans who will find him an easy target if there is any hole in his production. If Bauer struggles (see his time in Cleveland .. less than CY YOUNG quality) ... everyone will be creating a negative environment.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 15, 2020, 7:22 amTatis/Machado/Ozuna/Pham/Myers ,2-6,would absolutely destroy LH pitching.
Could actually move Nola ahead of Hosmer against LH and it would be 2-7!
Again, extremely unlikely, but I know my Christmas wish for this year anyway.

Quote from fenn68 on November 15, 2020, 7:42 amKeep seeing more “concerns” surrounding the decision on a 2021 NL DH impacting the roster decisions and FA signings. MLBPA want it .... owners will not agree without getting something in return .... stalemate.
Maybe that uncertainty impacted the decline of Moreland’s options (maybe some on other teams) and will have an impact on Dec 2 with non-tender decisions. The “FA” who are more DH types maybe choose to wait it out trying to leverage 15 more teams into the bidding. Also, GMs have to make a call on the 13 position players ... big difference if a DH ... maybe a lesser need for PH skills and bigger value in versatility, speed to support the 3 non-DH roles.
If, as most believe, 2022 will have the universal DH ... does a NL GM that really values a certain player (but a defensive question mark) bite the bullet and pursue that player on a longer term deal for the future ... just gamble on his defense in 2021?
From a GM standpoint ... always money first but they may have a eye on the FA class after next season and gamble on a “better choice” being there for them. Risk no matter which way ... so maybe if they can sign someone they like now that is better than waiting to next year to “try” to sign someone perceived better. Not easy to be a GM.

Quote from fenn68 on November 16, 2020, 1:45 pmNot sure what this suggests but Atlanta just signed Drew Smyly (LHP / 31) to an $11MM / 1 year deal ... seems like a significant overpay in this assumed environment.
Smyly has been injury prone ... in 2020 only pitched 26.1 innings (3.42 ERA and 5 starts) ... past 3 years only 140 innings (5.46 ERA). Signing is OK ... but $11MM?
Makes me think the Padres have a good deal with Davies for 2020 and an arbitration deal at around $8.5MM. In 2020, 69.1 innings (2.73 ERA) and 3 years run of 295 innings (3.63 ERA). Also one year control.
Now, if the Padres really think Lamet and Clevinger will be healthy, Paddack will rebound, and two of the “prospects” can hold the 4th and 5th slots .... is Davies a good trade chip given productivity at a good price? Probably will not resign him as a FA after the season (or give a QO) ... a lot of teams need a stable pitcher and the Padres need some longer control offense in the OF.
A gamble but Padres have some pitching depth and will need more offense over a 162 game schedule and in 2022 after Pham departs as a FA.
Davies (plus some minor pieces) for a longer control OF asset?

Quote from 3fingersplit on November 16, 2020, 4:42 pmWith Clevenger being done ( Tommy John Surgery) and Lamet being a huge question mark given the fact he is post TJ surgery and the Padres seem to have little interest in retaining Richards I would not be including any pitcher in any deal. What was once a fairly well stocked shelf of pitchers either at the ML level or knocking on the door from the farm system is beginning to appear a little thin.
Yates and Rosenthal may both be gone as well
You win with pitching and can NEVER have enough of it

Yep, wrote this just before I found out about the TJ for Clevinger. Can’t really deal any SP now and probably have to run through ST so see who fills out the rotation to start the season and would not be surprised to see a shuffle during the year to control innings.
At least the Padres have some high potential prospects ... so time to give them the challenge.

Quote from fenn68 on November 17, 2020, 3:01 pmAnnie HeilbrunnCraig Stammen will receive the 2020 Major League Baseball Award from the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation for his work over the years supporting the military. In SD, he personally pays for military families to enjoy games at ballpark (among other initiatives). #Padres==============The Padres and Stammen have had a very strong relationship for year ... this is part of the reason.Would not be surprised to seem him in the Padres' front office after his career ends. Maybe if the pen is crowded we see a Kinsler type move?
