Off season prediction contest!
Quote from JasonE135 on November 4, 2022, 7:27 pmIn order of likelihood I say:
1) Senga
2) Pederson
3) Davies
4) Benintendi
5) Eflin
Honestly I think it is very likely they will try to re-sign Martinez and Drury first.

Quote from Randy Manese on November 4, 2022, 10:35 pmI really like ex-Padre Eflin but he has a 15M mutual option with Philly. If Philly fails to pick it up and Eflin will sign for just a little bit less with some performance incentives (and his knee issues are mostly behind him), I can see a lot of interest in Eflin by SD. Not enough to get me off Senga as my first choice, but close.

I like Eflin but nowhere near $15mil per.. more in the $8 to $10 range..where I have a cluster of Eflin/Strippling/Clev/Sean/etc.. look there is only so much money to go around and guys always get left behind.. IF we secure an Eovaldi or Senga ..we will still need another SP..wait it off and choose from the "left over" bin..Davies ($1.5 mil last yr) was such a SP last year... Joc 1/$6.. Drury 1yr Minor league with ST invite were Bats in the "left over' bin in 2022...and this class is full of Huge $$ guys with 3 to 5 in that $40mil per reange. And another 5-8 close to $30+ range... so dollars will dry up quickly in FA as the top guys get signed...
If I am AJP I go after the ONE FA SP I deemed priority #1..Senga... try to retain Martinez (if he opts out) .. and ONE of the bats (Drury or Bell) in the right $$ deal.. and then WAIT for the "Sale Bin".. you'll be surprised at some of the bargains late in the game Peralta/Bradley/Cruz/ ??a slew of non-tendered types could all be sitting there for the picking...

Quote from Randy Manese on November 5, 2022, 8:40 amMartinez record as a starter when he was getting regular starts/piggyback starts was far less impressive than his RP stats. I'm not sure he'll get an overwhelming offer, i.e., over 10M per year, that would not make him move on from San Diego. His 4.30 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and HR% of 1.5 really looks like a #4 starter, at best, and many of those guys in smaller markets don't even get the 6.5M currently on his contract.
As a starter, Martinez was usually dependable one time through the line-up but started to struggle a second time through and would get hit hard if he even reached a third time. For that reason, he might be more valuable to the Padres given their situation than for most other teams, especially contending teams. If Martinez does opt out, might be available deep into the FA signing period unless he finds that one club that really sees something special in him. I, for one, don't think he's worth much more than the 6.5M to possibly 7.5M the Padres might give him. Martinez would be smart to alter his mindset and be that valuable middle of the game innings eater that can pick up for a failed starter or bridge to the high leverage arms to the closer. If I had to make a choice of where to put the money on the two opt-outs pitchers, it would be Suarez over Martinez; find another starter elsewhere.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on November 6, 2022, 10:17 amI've seen his name popup on a couple of top FA lists. He just seems like an AJ guy to me. He went to the KBO gained some velocity and refined his pitch mix. He's also thrown 177+ innings each of the last 4 seasons. We've seen AJ find success with Suarez, Martinez and Johnson. He also tried with Seth Frankoff, Taylor Scott and a few others. I just think it's the type of under the radar move he might make hoping to find a backend starter.
