You would think that this makes LF a platoon between Rooker and Beatty, and lets Profar return to the back up/bench role for which he is probably best suited.

Plus, hopefully this allows them to not put Abrams on the roster and let him develop a little longer in AAA, and get some time in CF so he can be ready when Grisham goes down with an injury.

Certainly not sold on Rooker, but Preller giving BoMel some platoon options in LF with Beaty, and a RH power bat.

Assume Profar still gets some shots at LF, but the added depth in Rooker allows him to be that utility INF again, and allow Abrams to platoon SS and back up 2B, plus give him some time, theoretically, to work into RF/LF if needed.

Good news is you now have some bench depth, likely with two of Profar (S), Beaty (L bat), Rooker (R power), plus Alfaro (R), and Abrams (L)/Kim (R).

Ill take Rogers over Pagan, plus we needed another LHRP. I was done on Paddack, and with his UCL issue, feels like Preller wanted to bail before he has yet another starter with his second tommy John.

Almost a deal that addresses needs vs. "surplus" balancing the deal. Padres were already in a position of dropping some arms (at least by May 1) to achieve the 13 pitchers.

Padres clearly needed another LHRP ... and Rogers is good. Pagan can be covered by the RHRP in house. Positive trade-off.

Padres needed another bat in the queue ... RHH power is complementary to Beaty / Profar. Padres were having a real issue filling the 13 position player roster for 2022 even if they added Abrams. Additional problem would manifest itself in 2023. Rooker may not be a starter but does have some upside versus the retreads of Thompson, Mazara, et. al that were in camp and any in house options lined up for 2023. Paddack with only 3 control years has injury concerns and has not rebounded to his rookie effectiveness ... plus has not unseated any of the 5 ticketed SP ... and apparently has fallen behind Gore and the first back-up.

I am good with the deal just based on covering what could have been some major holes in 2022 ... at least potentially. My time waiting for Paddack and Pagan to recapture their successes had passed and see the team pitching not suffering without them.

I like the Rogers pickup. We needed another lefty in the pen and he's a really good one. I'm less sold on Rooker. He's a 1B/DH masquerading as an OF. He also has fairly significant reverse splits in his minor league career. I'm not sure he makes our outfield situation any better.

I dont think this is necessarily true, according to baseball reference, at all levels of play, college, MiL, and ML his number of games in the OF are triple that of his games at 1B.

Might not be a great defensive LFer, but has over 1600+ innings in LF between all 3 levels, so makes me feel a little better.

Yeh, from my reading his OF issues are range and arm but that can be said of a lot of LF in MLB. Apparently his reads are fine. His value boils down to his power / hitting and way too little MLB experience to make a call. Minor League stats (when healthy) show promise.

You have to wonder, with MadBum on the mound tonight for AZ, does Rooker get the opening day nod in LF? Guessing that is if he can get to AZ in time for the game.

The Twins playing him in LF doesn't mean he should be playing there. He was one of if not the worst defensive outfielders in all of baseball on a per inning basis last season. If you're playing him in the outfield it's about the bat which will need to be a lot better to justify it.

As I wrote when Paddack and Pagan seemed headed to the Mets, both have had issues over the past two years, however, it seems like Niebla had them make some adjustments that at least made them traceable for a very good RP.  Paddack and Pagan are projected to have a high HR rate which will be exposed even more in Minnesota.  On the other hand, if Rogers hadn't had an injury to his hand that limited him to 7 innings in the last two months of the season, he might have been untouchable despite heading into his FA season.

Would have preferred to get Larnach over Rooker, but the 6.6M Twins are sending over eases that concern.  Rooker still has two options left and is somewhat redundant to Voit, i.e., a DH disguised as a position player.  Rooker will get some opportunities to play LF but it will be an adventure when he's out there; ultimately the next DH.  In the meantime, good power off the bench with more consistency than Campusano could have provided at this point.

It will be an interesting first month of the season and our potential pitching staff looks to keep us in many games despite an offense that will sorely miss Tatis.

Question for you all......could any or all of these left field options really be ANY worse that having Flim Flam Pham playing left field?

his defense was nothing to write home about....give these guys a chance
