Either of those works for me!

How much does Cano have left on his deal? Either way, still provide a great L/R option at DH.

Cano has 2 years at just over $24MM per season … about $49MM. Hosmer has 4 years at about $59MM unless he opts out after 2022 then it is only $20MM for 1 year but if he doesn’t opt out he gets full no trade rights.

Smith is about $2MM more costly than Paddack.

NYM may not be too concerned about their payroll (already blown over the tax threshold) but the Padres are … so some cash to the Padres would logically be included. The tricky part is setting the money considering the potential opt out financial impact.

Not holding my breath for this one but a deal of Paddack for Smith as a base might be feasible.

Latest report is that it would be Hosmer, Paddack, Pagan, and cash for Smith. I'm all for it.

Smith looked like he had start to figure things out from 2019-2020. His offensive numbers were really good against left-handed and right-handed pitching. Last year was rough, but he was playing with a partially torn labrum and a wrist issue. He's healthy and looking good again this spring. If he got back to his 2019-2020 form it would be a massive upgrade.

Do it AJ!!!!

I could see that from the Padres’ point of view … cost of Smith is about the cost of Paddack / Pagan .. so there a push. In this scenario Smith I guess to 1B.

If they believe Homser’s contract is “dead money” … paying a major amount still ends up saving at least some money. (Not sure how the work around the opt out scenario unless all the buy down is focused on 2022 basically making Hosmer zero cost to the METS in 2022 and then they take the risk he does not opt out at $39MM/3 years). Key for the Padres is they are no longer burden with Hosmer not opting out and securing no trade rights.

However, Smith for Hosmer does not solve the need for an additional hitter.

From the METS perspective … I can see them wanting Paddack and Pagan (even if the SD fans are not that fond of either) … but no idea the need for Hosmer UNLESS they are so disenchanted with Cano they will just release him (and that is not out of the question).

Since it is Sherman … and the METS are NY … maybe this has more legs that I would have thought.

Since Smith can go to LF or 1B … and depending on how much of Hosmer’s 2022 contract is “saved” … Padres could have to routes to take:

1. Add another bat but will have more flexibility as to position (should make the add easier). Could be a LF but could be a 1B (arguable cheaper and easier to get) or could be a DH with Voit to 1B. Basically opens a lot of new doors.

2. Stand pat … Smith to LF … Voit to 1B … rotate DH clearly with the 3 catchers and maybe Abrams getting AB and being reserve INF plus later in the year “rest days” for the regular position players. Could be a way to keep Abrams up and get him the ML AB.

Either of those scenarios allows Profar to do what he does best and provide back-up all over the INF/OF.

Smith put up a .951 OPS against right-handers and a .892 against lefties from 2019-2020 for some perspective on the type of offensive upgrade he could potentially be.
