Source confirms: Padres would include significant cash if deal goes through, as @Joelsherman1 reported. Cash going to NYM expected to be $25M. Would bring Hosmer AAV down to $6.25M. Joel also reports reliever Emilio Pagan would go to NYM along with Hosmer and Paddack for Smith. https://t.co/GObZ63yLo5

The Mets were considering this move even before Jacob deGrom reported pain in his shoulder and was ultimately found to have a stress reaction on his scapula.

Quote from fenn68 on April 2, 2022, 8:13 amShould be interesting to see how that $25MM is distributed over the 4 remaining years of Hosmer’s contract and might there be a condition that voids part of the buy-down if Hosmer opts out after 2022?
10-5-5-5? Would save the Padres $10MM in 2022 for another add if needed.
==========
The dealing of Paddack and Pagan must signal the Padres view of Nick Martinez and Gore for 2022 as SP and the potential in the other RP options.

Have to think this also increases the odds of Caratini being moved for a fringe rotation guy/long reliever to help piggy back with a slot open if Paddack gets dealt.

If Pagan is traded I think Kopps makes the bullpen

Quote from TucsonClip on April 2, 2022, 9:30 amFrom Acee's article:
Two sources said a trade with the Mets, some of the details of which were first reported by The Athletic late Friday night, could happen Saturday morning.
One source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the Mets were essentially deciding whether to accept the terms. However, another cautioned there are “a lot of moving parts” and the deal is not assured.
At least two of the Padres players involved have been informed by a person familiar with the discussions between the teams that a trade is possible soon.

I would guess Darvish, Musgrove, Martinez, and Gore go without piggybacking ... and Snell - Clevinger start the season as the piggyback. That still leaves Weathers in the wings and maybe Knehr as the 7th / 8th option.
Hard to see them use trade collateral for a fringe rotation guy while still needs offense help. Smith for Hosmer maybe is an upgrade but does not address the need for another bat.
IF Caratini could yield a legit position player ... and the Padres keep Capusano in AAA as insurance ... could see him being moved. If not, that Nola - Alfaro - Caratini C/DH rotation might work to keep Nola's bat in the line-up as well as Alfaro if he continues to pound LHP.

I will go with Wilson ... on the 40 man and more MiL experience. Kopps (non-roster) looks more like a mid-season add.
However, if they do the 3 for 1 roster players ... opens two slots on the 40 man. One may (should) go to a position player TBNL and one might be held open while Preller scans the waiver wire as teams make their cuts.

Paddack seemed ticketed as one piggyback, considering they just had him prep for that role. I guess you could ask Clev to go second in a pair with Snell. Doesn't seem like Snell would react well to being the piggyback.
Gore has looked great, but not sure breaking camp, and relying on him out the gates, is ideal. Still feel like we need an L insurance option, as I would start Weathers down in AAA.
Now at least you have some call up options in Gore, Weathers, Knehr.
Add that to Lin's comments yesterday about the front office being very aware, and embarrassed, of running out of starting pitching last season, and I think they look to add another option if they move Paddack.
Plus, the Homer/Pagan trade savings allow you more flexibility to search for another bat across multiple positions. Although, that works both ways for a bat and an arm.

Quote from fenn68 on April 2, 2022, 10:12 amNo problem with the logic for a spot starter / long relief add ... have a real issue in finding one at a reasonable price given the demand in MLB for pitching at this late date ... and hopefully one that could be stashed in AAA after May 1 when the pitchers go back to 13. As it is, when Clevinger and Snell get up to starters speed ... pushes Gore (maybe) back to AAA as the first call back.
Depends a lot on how much in 2022 is saved from Hosmer ... given the numbers for what the Padres will eat on the full contract ... might only be $6-7MM ... FA market is shallow but another trade might follow. It is Preller so a lot of ways to go.
