I would guess Darvish, Musgrove, Martinez, and Gore go without piggybacking ... and Snell - Clevinger start the season as the piggyback. That still leaves Weathers in the wings and maybe Knehr as the 7th / 8th option.

Hard to see them use trade collateral for a fringe rotation guy while still needs offense help. Smith for Hosmer maybe is an upgrade but does not address the need for another bat.

IF Caratini could yield a legit position player ... and the Padres keep Capusano in AAA as insurance ... could see him being moved. If not, that Nola - Alfaro - Caratini C/DH rotation might work to keep Nola's bat in the line-up as well as Alfaro if he continues to pound LHP.

I will go with Wilson ... on the 40 man and more MiL experience. Kopps (non-roster) looks more like a mid-season add.

However, if they do the 3 for 1 roster players ... opens two slots on the 40 man. One may (should) go to a position player TBNL and one might be held open while Preller scans the waiver wire as teams make their cuts.

Paddack seemed ticketed as one piggyback, considering they just had him prep for that role. I guess you could ask Clev to go second in a pair with Snell. Doesn't seem like Snell would react well to being the piggyback.

Gore has looked great, but not sure breaking camp, and relying on him out the gates, is ideal. Still feel like we need an L insurance option, as I would start Weathers down in AAA.

Now at least you have some call up options in Gore, Weathers, Knehr.

Add that to Lin's comments yesterday about the front office being very aware, and embarrassed, of running out of starting pitching last season, and I think they look to add another option if they move Paddack.

Plus, the Homer/Pagan trade savings allow you more flexibility to search for another bat across multiple positions. Although, that works both ways for a bat and an arm.
