Kris Bryant to the Rox!

Ugh!

7 years/$182 mil…...wow

No wonder we can’t sign anyone!

Well another big name drops …. Bryant to the Rockies …. $182MM / 7 years and full no trade.

Running out of options. Maybe time to look harder at the trades.

This is getting to be as disheartening as last trade deadline. I'm not sure the need for a move is quite as big now as it was then, but it's close. Preller cannot fail to improve the team at this juncture.

I’m thinking if everyone keeps over paying (paying more than the value AJ has on the player) then he will have to work the trades.

Thinking he doesn’t want to give up prospects if he doesn’t have too….but if he has too he will.

I’m sure many teams would like our prospects…just depends how desperate we get.

What would it take to get Reynolds?

Hassell/Mears/Paddack/Merrill?

Is that too much or?

The idea of trading that much makes me vomit a little in my mouth, but at this point I legit feel we're a little cornered.

STOP trading prospects! That's why we're in this mess! 3 for 1, 4 for 1......NO!!!!

Trust the process. Develop ( for once!) your own in house talent. Let Hassell, Mears,  Wood, Rosario,  progress to their natural abilities. Maybe, just maybe, a few of these guys can actually become legitimate MLB players.

We're harping on about money- how many players on this years opening day roster will have been drafted, honed, and graduated to San Diego? Dinelson Lamet? Anyone else? Bringing in an entire 25 man roster from somewhere has a cost, which is generally far greater than bringing guys up through your own system.

I'm not trading ANY of our top prospects for ANYONE( unless the Angels decide to move Mike Trout for A ball fodder).

We had a good farm system. AJ sold it for magic beans. Ride with the Dudes you brought to the dance- Hosmer, Myers. Maybe having a legitimate major league manager ( after the past 2 complete ass hats!) brings out the best in these guys.

This is the “you are here” version of the top unsigned FA bats:

1. Correa … projected WAR 5.2 … est contract 8 years / $30MM AAV

2. Freeman … WAR 4.5 … 5 years / $25 MM AAV

3. Story … WAR 3.6 … 6 years / $25 MM AAV

4. Conforto … WAR 2.5 … years ? / $17 MM AAV

5. Castellanos … WAR 2.1 … 4 years / $16 MM AAV

All five come with the QO penalty. Should note that apparently Castellanos out of CINN and as likely only a DH has a much lower WAR than expected. On the other hand Conforto is projected as a rebound. So, assuming Correa and Story are not part of the conversation … down to Freeman - Conforto - Castellanos.

For context the next three:

6. Pham … WAR 2.2 … 2 years / $10MM AAV

7. Soler … WAR 1.6 … 2 years / $9 MM AAV

8. Pederson … WAR 1.5 … 2 years / 9 MM AAV

After that the hitters fall into oblivion.  Actually the FA pitchers are in worse state.

Time to trade.

I detest the idea of trading significant prospects, but the facts are that this particular team build realistically only has a 2 year contention window and that we almost certainly need to do something now to maximize our chances of reaching the postseason. Musgrove and Clevinger are both free agents after this season, and Darvish and Snell are free agents after next season. I'd expect we extend Musgrove, but even then we'll need to fill in a significant chunk of our rotation in 2024. You'd hope Gore and Morejon would be part of the answer there, but so far their track records have made it quite difficult to bet on them.

Combine all this with the amount of money ownership continues to sink into this roster, our monumentally embarrassing collapse last year after utterly failing to improve a roster at perhaps the most consequential trade deadline in team history, and the general expectations of a city desperate for a successful sports franchise, and we're left with what feels like an absolute imperative to improve this roster one way or another.

So, as much as I hate it, if we can't improve the roster through free agency, we'll need to spend prospect capital to improve it via trade.

EDIT: Before anyone jumps on this, let me clarify... Our current rotation (representing significant prospect capital) is only built to last through 2023. While I fully believe we'll restock and extend our contention window beyond 2023, the certainty of our window only lasts through 2023.

With Kim at SS … Mazara in LF … Profar / Alfaro DH … Padres will not not make the playoffs baring 4 CY YOUNG efforts by Darvish, Snell, Musgrove, and Clevinger.

With Nick Martinez, Paddack, Weathers, and Gore target the #5 … could we gamble on two of the for #4 and #5 … still have two in the wings and deal one of the top 4. That would get a better return I would think.

Uncomfortable but what kind of offer would they get for an aging Darvish (but still effective) and 2 years control. Move Darvish … clear a lot of cap space to sign a FA and probably get a quality piece in return. IF Greinke gets $13MM from a non-contender … Darvish salary would not be an issue to a contender.

MINN, NYM, TOR, CWS, BOST all seem interested in the remaining OAK pitchers … has to be others still needed a top line arm … supply down / demand up would be good for the Padres in a deal.

Plus, since Darvish failed in closing the deal on Suzuki for SD … he is expendable.

Another bottle of beer off the wall:

Joc Pederson is signing with the Giants.
