Setting up for a battle between Paddack, Weathers, and Gore for that 5th SP slot … I am assuming Nick Martinez will not surface with the Padres.
Then back to my theme that SP hold great trade value in this market … a healthy Paddack who is low cost with 3 years control might become a key piece of a trade for a hitter. Sort of depends on the ST for Weathers and Gore and the health of the first four.
Well just as I hit submit … Kevin Acee reports that the Nick Martinez deal is done and he is in camp. So that expands the 5th SP candidates and in turn makes one of those candidates also a more likely trade candidate.

Quote from sportwarrior on March 16, 2022, 1:18 pmNick Martinez, absent some sort of revelatory development in Japan for his arsenal, is completely unexciting as a rotation addition... except, that is, for the additional depth he provides. This is the kind of player we were missing entirely last year.
Worth noting is that his deal is a little more carefully constructed than the initial 4/20 reports that I was aware of. Yr 1 is worth $4m with a $2m signing bonus. He then reportedly has player options for each of 23, 24, and 25 that increase by $1m each if he hits 20 starts this year.

Each of the future player option years are set a a base $6.5MM that increases by $1MM if he starts 20 games.
So, if he has a very good (doesn’t have to be great) good chance he opts out of a $7.5 MM 2023 … Padres would be fine with that because he had to be good in 2022.
Read a scouting report a couple of months back and in 2021 he was a significantly changed pitcher … velocity up, command better, off speed stuff improved. Why … don’t know and is that just an anomaly in his career?
Given that commitment by the Padres (clearly the scouting was impressed) … a good shot he wins the #5 out of ST. Will make the competition interesting.

Quote from 3fingersplit on March 16, 2022, 1:31 pmPadres finally sign Nick Martinez
https://www.gaslampball.com/2022/3/16/22981691/padres-have-finalized-nick-martinez-contract
2 million signing bonus....4 million salary with a million dollar bump each year based on games started ( 20 )....4 year deal - 2022 - 4 million plus 2 million bonus, 2023 could be 5 million, 2024 could be 6 million and 2025 could be 7 million.....2023 through 2025 are all player option so at the very least he is a 6 million dollar pitcher for the Padres this year.
I said earlier in the week that Kris Bryant checks all the boxes for what the Padres are looking for.....LF, 3rd base if Machado plays short or a day off, 1b and DH....right handed power, played at USD......unless he wants Machado type money this is a no brainer.
I would love to see him in Padre Brown and Gold
Other option would be Joc Pederson.....OF, DH and 1B.....Left handed

Quote from Jeremy Hill on March 16, 2022, 1:31 pmSame trash contract structure as Profar. Player options take away all the upside. If he does well we will be paying him to leave. If he doesn't we'll be stuck paying him 6.5m a year for 3 more years. I don't get it. That's not a contract we should be giving to a backend starter coming back from Japan.
Edit- I didn't see the buyout details at first. It makes more sense now.

Dunno if that includes the scouting report you're thinking of, but it backs up what you said. Increase in velo from ~90 to 93-94 and ticking 96, improved change, etc. Coupled with his fantastic 2021, that's certainly cause for optimism.

Quote from fenn68 on March 16, 2022, 2:44 pmBase on one speculation of Freeman … and his not yet signing … is that he clearly wanted a 6 year deal around a $30MM AAV. ATL did not want to go 6 years (would go 5). NYY probably did not want to make that long or big a commitment with the need for a big contract coming soon for Judge tacked on to their already big commitments.
So, LAD seemed the team BUT the report suggests that LAD would prefer going with a short term deal (4 years) but a higher AAV and are hedging given their currently high payroll and, really don’t NEED him. So maybe not making an offer near the ask.
So, if TOR - BOST - TB are just Trojan horses not making major offers and LAD stays short … sort of the scenario where Preller may sneak in if he offers the 6 years.

My thoughts as well, although Preller is somewhat hamstrung by the conceivable necessity of first securing a trade of Hosmer in order to avoid paying two 1Bs a combined $50m. Aside from finding that thought extremely distasteful, it also stands to reason that Freeman would be less inclined to accept a long term deal in a city where he can only share duties at 1B.

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 16, 2022, 3:09 pmIf we sign Freeman….and we can’t move Hosmer….I would think Freeman is the everyday 1b and Hosmer DH against RH starters.
If that doesn’t make Hosmer happy…..tough.

Quote from BoosterSD on March 16, 2022, 3:19 pmIF they sign Freeman, it would basically be a big FU to Hosmer, and IMO almost guarantee that he and Boras take his out option at the end of the season.
So with that the case, Preller could get Freeman to take a 5-6 year deal where this season is a "low" base salary with a signing bonus, and then after Hosmer bows out, then Freeman's salary gets to where he wants to be on average.
So for 2022 - $10M, and then $34M per season for the balance of the contract.
And don't forget, Freeman's son's favorite player already plays in SD......Tatis Jr. Maybe a little incentive for Freeman to sign in SD, little Freeman gets to hang with Tatis every spring. 🙂
