Off Season Moves and discussion

PreviousPage 49 of 100Next

While I’m surprised AJ hasn’t officially made any moves yet I’m encouraged that none of our potentially targets have been signed or traded either.

I did at least expect to hear the official signing of Nick Martinez?

If he’s at Camp wouldn't he have signed by now?

Or,is he not at Camp yet?

So Seiya Suzuki was in San Diego yesterday.

I’m thinking if he was just discussing a deal he would be in Az right?

Im guessing he was there visiting Petco…..anyone have any info?

Is this a good sign or just part of the courting process?

He has the same agent as Yu and there was a pic of the two together the other day.

Update…saw a pic of Preller eating dinner in San Diego so they were both in SD at the same time.

Has to be a good sign right?

Think he was still pending physicals last I heard. Might not be in a real hurry (a day or two delay) might be strategic IF Preller is bearing down on potential trades that could open up roster slots to fit him on the 40 man with a DFA.

I guess there is an outside chance there is something in the physicals that require a second opinion … and then maybe void the agreement. He is on a $7MM deal for 2022 ($20MM / 4 years) … if all the other SP candidates seem healthy Padres might be OK with voiding the deal to spend elsewhere. Probably not but an outside chance.

Yep, with Darvish connection (Darvish spent a lot of time with him during the winter explaining MLB life) coupled with the Padres real need for an OF bat … could see the Padres pay more than others for his services.

Plus behind the scenes the Padres want to build their Pacific Rim profile and adding a Japanese star in Suzuki to Darvish would help marketing. Same goes for Kim from Korea. Another piece that may justify paying a bit of a premium for his services.

From Suzuki’s perspective … joining a team with Darvish should ease his transition to ML / US life for better performance … plus Padres are a legit contender … plus the odds of getting a full time role is probably better than with most (if not all) of the other bidders.

Clearly this scenario is unlikely and dependent on other Padre moves (like signing Suzuki) but IF clearing some payroll of other signings wonder if dealing Myers to PHIL would be a fit.

PHIL is apparently really in search of OF help … they want to contend since they already have some big talent … not sure they want to go BIG on any of the FA (or if the FA want to go to PHIL) … PHIL does have payroll space (and Myers is only a 1 year commitment).

PHIL takes Myers and his contract (at least most) for only second tier (or low league prospects) … SD uses the freed up payroll space for either FA signings that better fit their needs or take the prospects received and flip them in a trade (or those prospects make it easier to move some of the current SD prospects).

Too many if / then pieces to actually work anywhere but the fantasy world but a concept.

MLBTR reports that Nelson Cruz is choosing between the LAD and SD … should be soon. I know LAD have a ton of money but if they are after Freddie Freeman (big money) can they afford both and play both given the rest of their roster?

At least with SD … a very good chance Cruz gets his maximum ABs.

Improving playoff odds for the Padres as CINN trades Sonny Gray to MINN for an A ball prospect. CINN won 83 games last season which would have got them #6 in a six team playoff. Now minus Gray and Castellanos (and probably others) they should be out of the hunt.

=====

On the flip side, I had MINN a prime trade partner with SD if the Padres wanted to move pitching for a bat … MINN has pieces that could help near term. They were very good until last year’s disaster but their everyday line-up is solid. Still could boost the SP … and they are active … so maybe. Shouldn’t take much to get Kepler (LHH OF) who is good (not great) a little more and they have some young controllable bats with upside.

Per Kevin Acee (notably an unreliable tease reporter) Preller has been very active over the past few days and is (could be) on the verge of something really BIG. Plus if they sign Cruz, that would (could) send a ripple effect of other moves.

=======

With such little real insight … can speculate any direction you want. However, if they signed Cruz and Suzuki … combined that should be around $25MM and two new bats.

First, would that trigger the trade of a player with a big contract (see Hosmer and Myers) maybe with prospects?

Could the Reynolds rumor have legs … not a cost add.

We could be near some Preller type action for discussion.

I'd be happier if AJ signed the 2 FA bats( it's not our money!) as opposed to moving our top prospects( Abrams, Haswell, Campusano, Gore- they're our future!)
