Off Season Moves and discussion

I guess I am in the view that since the Padres only have 12 position players on their 40 man roster and MLB has said they will revert to the 13 position player minimum (13 pitcher max) ... it will be hard to justify moving Hosmer or Myers ... along with money and prospects ... just to get an "upgrade" but still leaving major offensive hole in the OF/DH.

Love to add Olsen ... 2 years control and about $12MM this year in ARB could fit if the Padres do the other non-tenders suggested ... just what would it take without burdening them with any part of Hosmer or any other big contract? Focus on Weathers or Gore?

A little wary of dealing Campusano given he is the only real "call-up" option of any quality for catcher and we have seen Nola is appearing to be a bit of an injury risk. Caratini proved last year he is a part time backup type and wore down with heavy usage. Plus Campusano appears to be a good hitter (potentially) that could slot in as DH ... a Padre need now and going forward.

Apparently BALT is listening on Mullins ... LHH OF that had a breakout season in 2021. 3 years control and low salary via ARB fits the Padres' need. Only question is the breakout season the real Mullins?

Pitching is always a marketable commodity ... so dangle a deal around Weathers or Gore? Expand that a bit and target Mancini (1 year control) for DH?

Any deal with BAL better start with John Means. LHSP with very good numbers in the band box parks of the AL East, especially Camden Yards. From the little I have read, Mullins is a glove guy, that hopefully has found his bat. So in my mind, he becomes CF, Grisham slides to RF, and Myers takes over LF. And I think that BAL is a team that you could entice in taking Hosmer. His bat will play there and a great add to the clubhouse along with Mancini for a young team.

Please sign me up for a rotation of Clevinger, Means, Darvish, Snell, Musgrove!

I understand your concern with Nola, so he should really slot in as DH, and let the younger, stronger option play Catcher with Caratini.

We shed salary and pick up a LH arm for the pen/ young CF with solid bat to ball skills.

Thought Preller could have gotten more for an All Star but shows there's not much of a market for Frazier's skills.

Reports are the young CF has more upside than Suwinski so that's a plus.

I know we should never accept reported comments as fact but should at least consider the implications of what is reported as coming out of the Padres offices.

Post Frazier trade the comments did focus on the flexibility in payroll and that was tied with the desire to win in 2022 AND in the following years. Add was the teams desire to NOT exceed the luxury tax threshold (whatever that will be in the new CBA). So what does that imply (to me):

1. Less likely they trade top prospects as they are the low cost future that will “fund” the higher priced veterans.

2. If they go FA signing … likely a longer term commitment (> 2 years)

Keeping in mind that Myers is a FA after next season and Hosmer may opt out along with the offensive holes that currently exist … and not much offensively except Abrams / Campusano near term … Padres may want to create some offensive stability for 2023 and beyond.

Plus before we start spending the money saved from those two … remember that Musgrove and Clevinger will be FA too with Snell and Darvish FA after 2023. Then consider Tatis’ deal gets more expensive and Cronenworth, Grisham, Nola, Paddack go to ARB.

So IF the Padres can get Abrams, Campusano, Gore, Weathers into key ML 2023 roles at league minimum … frees up payroll to either retain Musgrove / Clevinger or pursue new offensive threats that extend beyond 2023.

So that is more the on-going winning side … but that leads to winning in 2022 and signing a “significant” FA hitter for maybe 4+ years with what looks to be about a $25MM max pool right now.

counter to all that is the rumor that the Padres are open to a reunion with Tommy Pham!!!!! … but at a bargain contract given his performance / health over the past two years.

Don’t forget Kopps should take over a high leverage spot in the Pen in 22’ or for sure by 23’.

I know he has had injury issues; however, for $5.2M I think Calhoun might have been a good gamble for SD. He just signed with TEX.

I really dont want him back at any price to be honest. Doesnt seem like a good fit in SD.

Gausman  to Toronto is great news. Hopefully Ray and  Scherzer to go to an AL team or at least out of the NL West.
