Should know today … leading the rumors METS and LAA … LAD / SF seem like long shots.

Quote from sportwarrior on November 29, 2021, 10:38 amHi all! Been a minute.
I figured this was as good a place as any to find some Padres intel during these CBA end times. I know Preller is ultra creative, but after a total whiff at the deadline I'm wondering if his luck has run out. Who are the potential adds for our holes in the rotation and LF?

As usual the Padres are in deep radio silence on targeted adds (if there really are any of significance). Moreover, not even getting the “leaks” from agents to “insiders” about players in discussion with the Padres as FA. All I have seen is some random filler speculation from the media on what the Padres “could / should” do … but nothing sounding as based in fact.
Since the real high end FA are the current focus from other teams (at maybe elevated cost) … could be Preller is targeting a player(s) who will be still there post transaction freeze with the idea that the player may be pressured to a more reasonable contract so as not to be left standing as the season begins. Alternatively, maybe he may be looking to the trade route … and that will not really open until post CBA.
Money may be part of the issue … current projection is $184MM and if they go up $20MM+/- probably don’t want to blow all that on one prime asset when they need to address at least two hitters (LF and DH) and boost the pitching with some “healthy” options.

Quote from BoosterSD on November 29, 2021, 11:37 amPHI has just DFAd Roman Quinn. If he was willing to take a MiL deal, would love to see him as a potential back up in SD. Not much of a bat, but SH CFer could be nice, Grisham hasnt been the healthiest, and has to be better than Profar in CF defense wise.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 29, 2021, 12:43 pmIt's interesting how with each of these big new deals the deals for Manny and Tatis get better and better.
I don't know exactly but I just saw a list of the top 10 AAV contracts and neither are in the top 10 now and this doesn't include Scherzer.
With Correia and Seager yet to come.
Heck they may not even be in the top 20 by the time this offseason ends.

Quote from fenn68 on November 29, 2021, 2:17 pmTomorrow is non-tender deadline ... any guesses (other than Strahm) on who may be let go by the Padres?
Outside chance some non-tender by another team might be of interest to the Padres ... at a price well below what he would have made vis ARB.

Quote from fenn68 on November 29, 2021, 2:43 pmNL West projected payrolls with the current rosters:
$206MM ... LAD even after losing Seager, Taylor, Kershaw, and Janssen ... not apparently in the hunt any major add
$184MM ... SD
$106MM ... SF ... the one to watch out for targeting Bryant
$104MM ... COLO ... bad and inactive
$ 81MM ... AZ ... worse and inactive
LAD have some injured pitchers returning and will be strong but some signs of potential weakness in the offense post Seager / Taylor ... Drury returning from injury ... Lux may not step up yet ... Justin Turner getting pretty old.
SF is bring back the usual suspects (less Posey) ... but could argue the overachieved and may fall back to earth where most thought they should be pre-2021.
So, MAYBE the Padres have a better shot even with the current roster base (adding a bat) IF the pitching is healthy.

Saw that. Not enamored with Alfaro but still he could be a target for Preller on his own given the roster and its lack of ML hitters.
Preller has a connection for his Texas days and maybe a bounce back candidate at a low cost (est. $2.5MM in ARB / 2 years control) plus since MIA’s alternative is non-tender … probably a non-prospect from the Padres in return.
Alfaro is only 28 … not a good defender either as a C or LF … but looking at his 2018-19 seasons with PHIL and MIA, he had about a 730 OPS which is about league average (good for catchers). Big K%.
Maybe add him as “insurance” with only 12 position players on the 40 man as a potential DH/LF and cushion the injury risk of Nola with a veteran. If it does not work out … DFA in ST and only pay half the contract. All thinks considered, he seems similar to Caratini.
Sort of a no harm move … at this point.
