Off Season Moves and discussion

The problem with Hosmer's contract is it's impact on the Competitive Balance Tax (CBT) and not necessarily what he will be paid after 2022.   The way the CBT is constructed, Hosmer counts as 18M per year through 2025 even though he will be paid "only" 13M after this coming year.  That is the problem, since the Padres want to be competitive for FA's and extending contracts during this 5 year window in the 2020's.

Concur it will be hard to move Hosmer but not impossible, especially if owners think there is going to be a payroll floor coming out of the new CBA.  For low payroll teams even after the ceiling floor, Hosmer' 18M won't be that much of a burden if they get several young prospects in the deal and/or rid themselves of expected high arbitration costs in these same years.

Cubs (Hayward) might be a line of discussion …. If the Padres are intent on moving Hosmer more than just moving payroll. Cubs seem to have payroll space and are retooling for the future … so maybe Hosmer with full contract IF a decent prospect(s) are included.

Follows the idea of Hosmer (and prospects) to KC for Santana … Santana for DH/PH … old and bad 2021 but there are a coupe of hits left his bat.

Hayward (2 years) and Santana (1 year) is shorter than Hosmer (4 years) … and that is good for future roster building. Note that after 2022 Hosmer gains 10-5 rights and that is full no trade rights making trading (considering Boras is his agent) a bit more difficult even at the lower annual salary.

Hard to deal based on speculated CBA changes … will there be a salary floor (and if so what is the level and how will it be phased in … doubt a significant 2022 major impact) … will the luxury tax survive (and if so what will be the new levels / penalties).

Union offers a high payroll floor to get the luxury tax at a much lower level … union likes the floor but does not want a luxury tax (especially at a lower threshold). Union also wants a modification to the six year control rules (lower) while owners proposed FA at 29 1/2. A lot of other issues … so in negotiation hard to make the call on which proposal survives to the final CBA. How than ends alters the teams in play for deals and the potential valuation of players in deals.

Each GM probably sees this pre-CBA differently for making deals.

Take this for what is worth from Preller yesterday … he said he will talk with Pham about potentially returning. No idea how serious that will be (or if Pham is willing) … probably Preller just doing due diligence for insurance if other options fall through and Pham has few suitors and becomes a low cost option on a “pillow” deal.

God please NO!! Lets just move on. Sign Canha instead IMO.

I really hope that Preller can pull off some sort of magic in a 3 team trade where MIA gets Hosmer, prospects, and money, OAK gets prospects, and SD gets Olson.

With the SPs SD has under contract returning to health, sign Canha, and get Olson that makes for a set team with Melvin at the helm.

In the words of Nancy Reagan, " Just say no!".

Not sure the Padres have enough prospects to do both.

Oakland is clearly shedding payroll so will not take any player who is making anything.

Now they will be trying to sell very high on Olsen … only 27 with 2 control years and about $12MM via arbitration in 2022 and finished ranked #2 1B with a lofty 5.0 WAR. That is a player that a number of teams will pursue as 1B/DH but do other teams have the quality prospect(s) and would be willing to trade those prospects?

Padres probably would have to focus around dealing one of their top 4 … Campusano may work as a Top 100 - catcher - 6 control years. Maybe Gore? I would not consider Abrams or Hassell.

Now to move on from Hosmer … and at least $12MM of his contract in 2022 … may need to attach either Campusano or Gore (not used for Olsen) for minimal return in players. Long shot but MIA (also not wanting to spend) could potentially pass on one of the top 4 and accept a volume play of prospects (Martinez, Knehr, Wilson, Rosario if want near term or Merrill, Mears, Wood types if playing the long game).

So COULD happen … then sign Canha ($10MM) for LF.

Another side from Preller’s interview … on the question of Frazier playing LF. My reading between the lines he said he would discuss with Frazier his preferred role in 2022 which to me left the window open that if Frazier in LF did not sit well (and he is not a prototype LF) Preller may try to move Frazier in a deal (1 year control and about $7MM in arb). Might clear some payroll space to sign a legit LF.

Not sure who needs a 2B (someone suggested CWS) at that price point but with Kim covering the bench and Abrams / Rosario poised for mid-season support … an option.

I have just as much a chance as being a succesful LF for the Padres as Frazier does!

This guy just has no place on next years team( unless Preller gets REALLY stupid and attaches Hassel or Abrams to Hosmer!)

AJ needs to move him for the best offer possible. If it's a box of baseballs, so be it.
