Quote from WindsorUK on November 8, 2021, 1:43 pmDo the Royals need a 1B?
Be nice to send Eric back where he had success. Maybe he could find what he left behind?
I definitely do not want to send anything of value just to get rid of him. Actually thinking if we could just put him in one place( a la Myers from a few years ago) he might have, at least, a decent campaign.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 8, 2021, 1:51 pmOne of their 1b prospects just signed in Japan...McBroom.
But they do have another 1b prospect just about ready....Nick Pratto.
I'm not sure if they're prepared to hand 1b over to him or may think it would be a good idea to have someone like Hoz to mentor him?
They could always rotate them at 1b/DH.
Carlos Santana played there last season.....he will be 36 when the season starts and slashed .214/.319/.342 last season.
So yeah....they could use a 1b.
Just looked....Santana is under contract for 2022 at just over $10 mil....yikes.
Would we be willing to take Santana back if it means sending them Hosmer?
One year of him at DH/LHPH I guess?

Quote from fenn68 on November 8, 2021, 3:24 pmConsider Hosmer's past 4 seasons with the Padres and now 32 ... he IS a 0 to 1 WAR player. If you were another team would you take his contract which is now $59MM/4 year (with the complication of Hosmer's choice of an opt out).
If Hosmer was a FA, what would you pay to sign him? With that WAR and rated near the bottom of 1B in WAR, hard to imagine giving him much more than $8-10MM on a one year deal (suggesting the opt out is a long shot).
That leaves the Padres paying down and creating a ton of dead money unless they start adding some high value prospects (in the mind of the buyer).
Just having a hard time seeing a team really interested in Hosmer even if they need a 1B for anything close to his contract.

Quote from fenn68 on November 8, 2021, 3:44 pmListening to 97.3 (The Padres' station) and the show with Tony Gwynn, Jr. and Chris Ello.
An AMAZING off target discussion on all the players who became FA today. BOTH commented that Tommy Pham was "non-tendered" by the Padres and then went on about all the other "non-tenders" on other teams (the 6 year FA in reality). Two analysts that do work for the Padres games don't grasp the difference between the FA as of today (no longer in the 6 year control window) and the "non-tender" process that comes up in a couple of weeks for players controlled within the 6 year window.
Might be less frustrated if they were just the normal run of talk show hosts but they are Padres' baseball analysts ... just non-professional in doing their homework (or at least basic awareness).

Side Ello a few years back was doing a rundown of the Padres prospects in AA ... except he was running down the San Antonio roster which at the time was no longer a Padre farm club ... never had a clue.

Quote from Randy Manese on November 8, 2021, 10:46 pmRead where the Marlins are looking to trade some of their top flight pitching for hitting. Since we are speculating, maybe even wildly, I really like Sandy Alcantara. Miami is looking for a couple of upper level prospects, so what about this idea:
Alcantara and 1b-dh Jesus Aguilar for Luis Campusano, Ha-seong Kim and Eric Hosmer? Hosmer replaces Aguilar, Campusano is their catcher of the future (as early as next year) and Kim can become an everyday infielder. I'm not sure if Kim has a no-trade clause but one can see that he does have the talent to be very good if he can get enough ABs consistently. Hate to lose Campusano but we have Valenzuela in the wings.
Alcantara rounds out our staff and Aguilar plugs the hole at DH. This gets Hosmer off the payroll (Marlins have a lot of payroll space!) and Hosmer, if he doesn't opt, has his salary drop significantly in 2023. We can replace Kim with Abrams or even E Rosario in the short run. This will allow the Padres to go after a corner OF, since around 12M will be freed up by this deal.

Quote from fenn68 on November 9, 2021, 4:00 amAlcantara would be a great get if the Marlins want to move him. The proposed Padre offer is probably light to get 3 years of an elite SP who pitched over 2oo innings at a low salary.
I could see Hosmer in the deal along with Campusano (they need a catcher) but they really don’t need Kim (especially with his contract) … they have a strong INF. I know MIA has a low payroll … just don’t know if they want to spend. Also, if they want to look for hitting … not sure moving Aguilar makes sense (hit better than Hosmer).
So maybe Alcantara for Hosmer, Campusano, and a couple of pitching prospects (one very good the other mid range). If the Padres use strong enough prospects in the deal … and MIA has the will to increase the payroll in 2022 (less of an issue in the following years considering Alcantara potential ARB) … Padres may not have to eat much (if any) Hosmer salary opening up some space for a FA hitter (LF/DH).
Also, adding Alcantara would open the door to trade a Padre SP for a LF/DH …. Weathers? Paddack (if healthy)? Doubt they move Musgrove, Darvish, Snell, or Clevinger.
=====
I guess a different spin would NOT to include Hosmer and build around Campusano with younger prospects. Depends if the goal is to add Alcantara or move Hosmer … both just makes the deal more difficult. Alternatively, forget Alcantara and focus on Hosmer with Campusano with the Padres eating no money for maybe a lesser return.

Obviously the Royals...nor any other team would want Hosmers' contract "as is".
The Padres will have to pay it down some plus this is a way for the Royals to get back a fan favorite "and" add a prospect or two at the same time.
Not saying it's likely....but it could be "possible".

Quote from fenn68 on November 9, 2021, 12:56 pmJust listened to Kevin Acee interview … he seems be convinced that moving Hosmer is a top priority of the Padres and believes they will pay down the contract and attach prospects (but not Hassell). Just want to be done with him.
On the flip side, Acee believes it will be very difficult to find a team to take a deal for Hosmer.
So clearly that will be a legit storyline.

Quote from fenn68 on November 9, 2021, 1:02 pmAnother storyline Acee threw out was the timing of FA signings / Trades pre-DEC 1st (CBA ends).
One element I did not consider would be the player (agent) would be eager to sign early to get an immediate bonus payment … maybe to tide them over if there is an extended work stoppage.
I guess another factor for both the team and the player signing early would be security of a deal in place and once the new CBA is in place the player can immediately start working with the team / go to ST if the work stoppage goes long.
He speculates November may be very active on the player movement scene.

You could always look at bad contract for bad contract, and hope for a change of scenery bounce back. Perhaps with the departure of Rizzo, we could do a Heyward for Hosmer. The bats are both not very good, but SD could move Crone to 1B, play Frazier at 2B, let Heyward play RF and move Myers to LF. Might have to send some cash to CHC to balance out the $44M to Heyward vs the $60M for Hosmer.
