New York Mets at San Diego Padres: June 5-7
Quote from fenn68 on June 6, 2026, 3:15 amQuote from WindsorUK on June 6, 2026, 3:04 amSaw that Tatis has a .426 BA over the past 10 games, yet only scored 4 times? That's ridiculous! With his speed alone he should have scored more than that.
And hitting Sheets in the 2 hole? I'm not sure in which Bizarro world that makes any sense?
Just seems a REALLY bad offensive approach to baseball, whatever approach they're taking.
In the current thinking across MLB putting players like Sheets up in the line-up seems to be common ... I guess they like the power. PHIL had Schwarber leading off and in my era that was reserved for an on base speedster type. So, not specifically a Padre issue.
Although Tatis is getting his hits lately ... almost all are singles up the middle and opposite field ... not getting those doubles or HR. Plus his base running (steals) seems not to be at his previous quality ... he is getting thrown out more than expected.
Basically if the middle of the order cannot hit ... Tatis' singles are wasted.

Quote from fenn68 on June 6, 2026, 3:24 amNote that they almost were forced to use Miller yesterday since he had only appeared once since May 23.
Basically non use of one of the best closers in MLB is a waste caused by not being ahead near the end of games. If the Padres are out of it in July (and in my view have little upside in 2027) have to market Miller at the trade deadline ... his high profile - long control - relatively cheap contract would pull a quality return.

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 6, 2026, 5:16 amSure would like to keep Miller but for that to happen we gotta start hitting or the temptation for AJ to trade him for bats may be too great.

If they trade him ... would be to a contender (as of now quite a few) for prospects ... given the state of the team now and in the future ... I would take quality SP or hitters.
Considering the Padres could be with only Vazquez returning for 2027 (FA/opt outs/injury) from the starting rotation ... I guess they could hold on to Miller and try to convert him to a SP. Given he is controlled for 3 years but that will come with some high ARB salaries and no guarantee of success plus the potential for injury ... on a team that may not be even a playoff contender ... big risk and alone will not turn the tide. Better to take the risk on the upside of a prospect(s) with 6 years control at a low cost ... spend the salary differential on other upgrade FA players?

Quote from ultratvfan on June 6, 2026, 9:46 pmThe Padres finally win again. Fermin sends one out hitting his first HR of the season.
Canning was outstanding and Miller closes the door to earn his 18th save. Song goes 2for 2 and Tatis goes 2 for 4.
Now, make it two in a row and win the rubber match. Vasquez on the mound. Manaea for the Mets.
GO PADRES!

Quote from Jeremy Hill on June 6, 2026, 11:15 pmThis was my first game back at Petco since returning from Japan. It wasn't pretty offensively, but we'll take any win we can get right now. Song did a nice job redeeming himself after getting fooled by the little league play. I'm not sure there's anyone that needed to see a ball go as much as Fermin. Luck was on their side tonight. We still need the bats to get going.

Quote from fenn68 on June 7, 2026, 4:06 amBack in a playoff slot by the narrowest of margins ... .001 percentage points!
METS media / fans must be really frustrated getting beat by Song and Fermin along with the freak RBI from Tatis where the grounder hit the 2B bag and diverts the ball from the second baseman into RF.
Good start by Canning who is securing his role in the starting rotation. After two very poor starts in mid-May he has rolled out four starts giving up 3 - 3 - 3 - 1 runs ... not top of the rotation results but good enough for positioning most teams to win games ... in those games Canning is 0 - 2.
With Buehler also settling in after a slow start ... in his last five starts: 2 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 1 runs given up ... as with Canning's performance that sets up a chance to win ... he is only 1-1 in those starts.
So if the recent work of Buehler and Canning holds up ... and King, Vasquez basically hold their season performance level ... that is a starting staff coupled with an elite bullpen that can get the Padres to the playoffs (given the struggles of other teams) with just some basic offense production out of the core. #5 SP is still up for grabs ... not seeing it in Giolito so far, Marquez may return but did not see it in him either, Waldron not the answer ... so if they tread water for a month or so ... maybe Pivetta or Musgrove slide in ... maybe they gamble on Brito who was really effective in his rehab ... maybe a trade deadline move.
2026 is mystifying ... before the season expectations were high (for me) but now without Pivetta, Musgrove, and Darvish (all upper rotation arms) and what was expected to be a strong offense given 2025 performance levels ... now floundering as the worst hitting team in MLB. Somehow in playoff slot after 61 games. Defies the odds.
Will make June interesting ... does the hitting come around and the Padres go on a winning streak or does the pitching fade and struggle and the Padres go on a losing streak or some combo of the two and remain treading water on the edge of the playoff slot?
This can legitimately go a lot of different ways.

Quote from fenn68 on June 7, 2026, 4:37 pmPadres score 3 on Saturday and 3 on Sunday ... not good but as concerning is that
5 of the 6 RBI came from Fermin and the other came on a Tatis ball that hit the 2B bag and bounced away from the fielder. Tatis get credit but just luck.
Of the 6 runs ... 2 to Fermin on his HR ... 2 to Taylor ... 2 to Song.
Basically the total offense has come for the most unlikely players in Fermin, Song, and Taylor.
Plus can't avoid the ill advised attempt to steal third base by Tatis when on 2B, 2 outs, and France at bat ... yes, he was thrown out by a lot ending the rally.
