This is not fun
I take that back
Hey! What do you know! Tingler thought of a reason ... maybe Hosmer will bat in the 9th against a RHP with the game on the line!

Quote from Brian Connelly on October 8, 2020, 8:28 amWhat I love the most about this team is they NEVER give up, and are NEVER out of it, as they've proved again & again...
I am NOT giving up on this series, because I know the guys in that dugout aren't. The pressure is ALL on the Dodgers, not us.
It would be catastrophic for them to lose a series when down 2-0. We've set the stage nicely for some end of game bullpen issues for them... let's do it!!

Quote from Randy Manese on October 8, 2020, 8:58 amLet's tell it like it is. Your starting line-up essentially has 4 rookies, i.e., not played a full season; a guy with vision problems, COVID and a broken hamate bone; a lifetime .235 hitter; a 1b man with health issues to begin the season; and two underperforming players who weren't playing to their salaries per many Padres fans. We also lost our closer for the season and had an underperforming bullpen in the first month of the season. Then, we lost our two best starting pitchers for the playoffs. Yet, this team persevered with resilience and spirit! Got to love those guys - win or lose! Go Padres!

Quote from Brian Connelly on October 8, 2020, 9:54 amRandom thoughts popping into my head:
- Dan Altavilla looked A-MA-ZING: Dotting corners at literally 98-100. Glavine even said "I'm trying to figure out why this guy wasn't on the original playoff roster". Granted his arm was completely "fresth", but could also have been "rusty". If he maintains any semblance of that performance into next year, it really tips the Nola trade scale in our favor
- Glavine is BY FAR the best color commentator/analyst. LOVED how he was dissecting the late AB's with Tatis & Machado. He is really gifted at making the professional viewpoint accessible & clear to a layperson. Mudcat frequently correctly predicts "next pitch" type & location, but Glavine was delving deeper looking at it from the hitter's POV.
- Moreland is a professional hitter.
- LOVE Manny's emotion, but it is a little hypocritical to call out the great catch by Bellinger & then turn around and do the Bat "Heave"... love that he just invented something else to do with the bat!

Now, about this game, if Hosmer would have taken the same aproach Tatis and Machado took, he would have tied the game, or actually would have found himself in a hitters count, it was pretty obvious Kelly didnt want to surrender the big hit, unless it was really necessary to go right after him, IMO Hosmer was very anxious and that is why he failed
Great points Alex. I do consider LAD the "evil empire", but I might actually root for them over the Yankees (life long hatred) or cheating Astros. I won't lie that I enjoy them failing annually.
You're exactly right on Hosmer. At 1-1 he swung on a low pitch that he had just seen Kelly had put up there multiple times vs. Tatis & Machado; they took it, Hosmer didn't. Changed the whole AB: 1-2 defensive hole instead of being 2-1 hitter's count. Love Hos in that big situation, but hurt himself there.

Quote from MrPadre19 on October 8, 2020, 10:44 amI'm running on about 7 hours sleep over the last 48 hours.
I wouldn't complain if we had won one of these games!
Let's get tonights and i'll be on about 11 hours sleep over 72 hours and won't complain....cause I can sleep in Saturday morning after we win game 4 and tie up the series.
We need to at least make them sweat a little like we did last night.

Quote from BoosterSD on October 8, 2020, 11:12 amLooks like Roberts is going to tag Dustin May with the start tonight. We did not look good against him on Tuesday, in what 2 innings. So, does the preview help SD tonight? Or does May feel really good knowing that he bowled us over two days ago?
Does Tingler load up on LHH tonight? DHing Moreland and Profar in LF? Saving Pham for a big spot v. a LHRP?

Quote from MrPadre19 on October 8, 2020, 11:39 amI think I'd rather see May than Gonsolin.
If I recall correctly we did OK against May earlier in the year.....or am I wrong?
I know I do remember that we couldn't do anything against Gonsolin.....

Quote from Ben Davey on October 8, 2020, 12:40 pmMay's first start is the one where he essentially posterized Manny, making him look absolutely garbage on a filthy 98 mph sinker low in and in that Manny swung over.
In his 2nd appearance (he come on in the 3rd after a Graterol start), he cruised through 4 innings only allowing an infield single and a walk. In the 5th inning, Moreland reached on an error than Profar hit a 2 run-HR. The next inning, Manny hit a MAMMOTH HR that chased him.
That is essentially May's MO. He can be absolutely dominant but if players make contact it can go FAR.
With May already throwing 2 innings two days ago, I dont expect him to go more than 1 turn through the order. My guess would be May for 2-3 IP, then over to Urias for 5. Padres faced Urias once (the game where Paddack was LIT UP by LA), in that game Pham and Hosmer went back-to-back in the 1st inning off of him, but then never had more than one base runner on in any inning the rest of the night.
The key for both pitchers, they are young and addreniline will be high early on. Lay off the sinker (most likely pitch to be thrown for a ball), and wait for a FB in the zone. Obviously easier said than done when they are pumping 99, but that has to be the philosophy

Quote from Ben Davey on October 8, 2020, 12:54 pmI''m guessing the rationale for Roberts is, May and Urias should give you 7 or 8 innings. Help save the bullpen as multiple guys have pitched back to back days. If the Padres win, Gonsolin in Game 4 (2 games against the Padres this year 11.2 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K), although he was roughed up in his last outing and hasnt pitched in two weeks.
To me, this makes it even more crucial that the Padres get to May early. If they can make him throw 20+ pitches in the first few innings, Roberts might go to Urias in the 3rd. Keep the same approach, if Padres can keep putting multiple runners on maybe Urias gets pulled after 3 or 4 innings making the Dodgers bullpen have to cover more ground.
Consider of their relievers...
Treinen: Pitched both games looked good in both but 30 P in 2 days already...
Jansen: 30 pitches yesterday, threw both games. No way he is available
Kelly: 20 pitches to get one out, had no control. Would you trust him?
Gonzalez: Rookie, threw in game one. Do you trust him?
Graterol: Was a few inches away from giving up the Tatis bomb. Pitched yesterday
Their other four relievers (Kolarek, Floro, McGee, and Baez) havent thrown in two weeks. How much rust could they have against a patient Padre team?
