National League Division Series

The Dodgers just prove that we need to add starters even if we expect Gore/Patino/Weathers up in the next 1-2 years.

Injuries happen(Lamet/Clev) and having a very good #3ish starter in the bullpen is a luxury.

They have a guy like May who wasn't even a regular in their rotation.

Sign Stroman or Tijuan Walker or Odorizzi for next season to replace Richards because you can never have too much pitching.

Then the rookies start in AA and only come up when needed/ready.

Think the Padres could (would) out bid other teams for any of these guys ... all under (or at ) 30?

Stroman was paid $12MM in 2019 ... and was very good.

Walker was paid $5MM in 2019 and produced a 2.70 ERA this year.

Odorizzi just is not that good but still got $17.8MM on the QO.

IF they could sign any of these .... likely a multi-year deal and likely would really crimp any other signings. 29 other teams also think you can't have enough pitching ... and some will pay for that.

Injuries happen, but ours came at the worst possible time.

What would people say if Buhler and Kershaw went down with an injury and missed the playoffs.  Yes the Dodgers would still have May, Gonsolin, and Urias which is why they are so deep and the odds on favorite to win the world series, but even then they arnt 100% confident in them.

The Yankees have Cole, Tanaka, and ???
The Braves are in the NLCS and they have three starters in Fried, Anderson, and Wright.  After that its bullpen days.  What happens if Friend and Anderson are gone?  Ouch.

What it tells me is how badly the Padres needed to actually bring their starters up as starters.  They have been doing the sabermetric thing with Morejon this year, but when it came down to it hes now starting a pivotal game and probably wont be able to go more than 3 innings against a team that is weak to LHP.  The Padres have Gore, Morejon, Patino, and Baez who were all ranked roughly the same or better than Ian Anderson with the Braves.  No reason they cant be just as good as a starter.

Pitching across MLB is just messed up this year ... the best healthy SP are only got 12 starts and innings in the 70s+/-.

I know it seems the Padres SP did not go deep but looking at MLB in innings pitched:

#19 Davies (69.1)

#20 Lamet (69.0)

#44 Paddack (59.0)

#78 Richards (51.1)

Not too bad considering there is the potential for 150 SP slots.

So hopefully a healthy core of SP with Lamet - Clevinger - Davies hold 3 slots ... the maybe start the season with Paddack - Morejon. Let Patino - Gore - Baez - Weathers work in the minors on starting and going deeper ... pace them by skipping starts or going on extra day rest. In the minors still can use April-May to work the inning count up. IF Paddack or Morejon fall short ... have a stretched out SP in the minors to rotate in (yet not over worked).

Remember they will have ST to go through the normal process of getting them stretch out to start .... so the innings management has to come during the season.

I know this is a league wide issue but seems as though Tatis is leading the league in over sliding the bag and getting tagged out after a successful steal. Frustrating.

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate the head first slide?

Leads to injury and outs from missing the bag.

Now with the “oven mit” I guess they think the risk of injury is less so they do it even more....but now it’s even harder to grip the bag.

Another missed opportunity

Stammen!

This is what I feared when we signed him and sure as sh** he kills our season!

What was Tingler thinking?
I’m so upset I’m about to turn off  the last game of the season and I never turn it off even at 1 am

Roberts has outsmarted Tingler tonight.

He starts May and Tingler responds by starting Moreland and Castro and neither even faced the right hander.

Now they are facing a steady stream of left handlers.

Beating a dead horse here, but the pitching just isn’t good enough to beat the Dodgers this year or any year for that matter.  Clevinger and Lamet have unbelievable stuff, but are just too violent to last long in this league.  Paddack and Stammen need to be left in Dallas.  Richards and Davies are regular season pitchers only.  The young guns throw hard but I don’t like their stuff at this point.  However, they have time.  Go to work Preller.  If anyone can do it, he can.

Side Note:  I am tired of hearing about Gore.  Piss or get off the pot.  It’s time.
