8th round pick last year has soared up the organization to AAA with dominate performances in LE/EP. He may be that case were "older" (he is 24) is a bit irrelevant considering his short professional time and short time as a RP. In college he redshirted his freshman year and got a medical redshirt for his junior year (2017) so returned for his senior season in 2018 ... as the Friday night starter. When drafted comments were that he might move quickly as a RP (plus slider I think). He surely has ... but does he have the stuff to carry that success to the ML level?
Did note that Wilson was not being used as the closer even with those dominant stats ... maybe needed to see his work first ... he was an unknown to a degree even to the Padres or maybe his results are more impressive than his stuff / projection (remember Quackenbush).
Padres need RP help ... he could ... maybe.
He's clearly "fast tracked". AAA : 4 games 7 IP 0 Hits! 2 BB, 8 K....
.... If his line is anything like this after 10-12 appearances... seems like he could definitely help!

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 30, 2019, 6:30 amAs if our Farm system isn’t already enough to be excited about......this old Padre fan simply can’t wait to see Edwards and Abrams in San Diego.
Im not sure where they’re gonna play......but those kids are “my” kind of players!
I know it’s a long ways away and guys will come and go......but could you imagine a lineup with Tatis/Edwards/ Abrams hitting ahead of Machado/Reyes/Renfroe and Hosmer?

Second that. Would also add Campusano at catcher to really lengthen the line-up. A 19 year old catcher who leads the CalLeague hitting has got to have some real upside ...
They all may arrive sooner than some may think given MLB in general (and SD specifically) is moving towards elevating the "super talented" up the organizations and into the ML at ever younger ages. 2022-23 may not be not of the question.
Looking at the the talent in the system ... team could not only end up with a great long starting line-up but one very, very talented bench to cover injuries / keeping the starters fresh. That will keep a lot of pressure on the rest of the league for the entirety of the season.

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 30, 2019, 10:21 amWith Buddy Reed and Estuery Ruiz becoming Rule V eligible after the season....who do we let go between Getty’s,Reed,Olivares and Ruiz?
Gettys is making his case for sure....but everyone hits in EP.
Reed has had his struggles but still huge upside.
Olivares is getting better every season with power and speed.
Ruiz is still so young and also improving every year.
I can’t see any way the Padres take a chance of losing Olivares or Ruiz.

I would keep Olivares on the 40 man and add Ruiz based on their trending in 2019 ... both plus athletes who look like hitters. Olivares is very likely to be in AAA as a key 2020 call-up for all three OF slots ... I would treat him as a lock for the 40 man. Ruiz has the real upside with his bat and base running (and is only 20) but since he is only in A+ outside chance they could gamble and expose him assuming low chance of a claim.
Expose Gettys and Reed to Rule 5 ... small chance either are selected AND KEPT. Both have failed to demonstrate any real hitting skills and frankly if they were taken and lost ... not really concerned.
Padres are getting to the point where their 40 man will be populated by better players / prospects and that will force them to expose those real long shot even if they have high ceilings. Additionally, given that the position players seem to be settling for a number of years but pitching is still in development ... on close calls among the 40 man roster options they may opt for protecting a pitcher to protect from injuries and failures while setting up more 25 man roster flexibility with use of minor league call-ups / options.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 3, 2019, 1:13 pmDoes CJ Abrams stay in the AZL all year despite making it look like High School?
Can we get him to Tri Cities at least?
I mean....how else are we gonna get him to San Diego in 2021?

Agree with this assesment: Olivares has simply vastly outperformed Buddy Reed (the collegiate version of Gettys) at AA. The Gettys over Margot idea I & others have floated (as a platoon CF/5th OF) is tough to make... Gettys simply has never gotten on base in his career, although was better in June.
Preller like most GM's tends to give players he acquired by trade like Ruiz a long leash. But this is exactly the type of guy it's going to be increasingly tough for the Padres to roster: likely AA non-MLB ready last year, and inconsistent hitting/OBP/ and defense... but leading Cal league in stolen bases.... so a prospect basically. Will be TIGHT roster in offseason, but think they'll find a way to squeeze E. Ruiz onto 40-man. Munoz will be up soon; other than those 2 may not be any others protected.

I think he'll be in Tri Cities soon. "Bumps" Jordy Barley, but both can play 2B too...

Quote from fenn68 on July 3, 2019, 2:57 pmStill keep an eye out for Allen Cordoba ... outside chance he returns to the 40 man (still has minor league options) since he is the athletic versatile player the Padres are coveting. (more importantly I like him) 🙂
Coming off last seasons' injuries and missing April he just had an OK May but was on fire for all of June and his last 10 games have be unworldly. He was selected as a Rule 5 by the Padres for his bat and athletic skills and not after some delay is showing them. He mainly has been 3B/LF but popped up at SS and recently in CF (hard to bump J.Rosario out of CF).
I could see him moved up to AA this season ... AMA OF (after Olivares) is not that strong so an opening spot is easy or maybe Olivares gets the bump to AAA to set up his role in 2020 as the OF call-up.
=====
As for Abrams .... would expect him bumped up in a week or two.
