Minor League Discussion

PreviousPage 374 of 374

After making his professional debut in the previous round, Borthwick is now listed as the starter for tonight's championship game. He followed Schoolcraft last time out. The Schoolcraft, Borthwick, Su trio was dominant last time out. They'll probably turn to it again to try to win a title.

More experienced former college players need to lead the offense tonight.  If that happens and our pitchers pitch to their potential it will mean a second championship in our minor league system, both at the lowest levels of the organization.  Prospects are rising but they are a long way away from helping the major league team.  GO STORM!!!!

YES!!!  A 13-2 win!  Make room for Borthwick at the top of the pitching prospects - he is for real!

There are 5 minor league pitchers that could be put on the 40 man roster, where there should be ample room for all five.  Two are free agents after the World Series ends and represent good LH arms that are worth a gamble since we might have some holes on the roster for LHP; these two are Luis Gutierrez and Jagger Haynes.  Both these pitchers made it to AAA with the former battling injuries but showing very well when healthy; Haynes has some talent although not a lot of velocity.

One RP who has a ton of potential and is Rule 5 eligible is Tucker Musgrove.  He is just too good to risk losing even though his command is still not where it needs to be.  Two long shots for the 40 man are RH SP Ian Koenig and Eric Yost, who showed flashes of talent (not top end but bottom of the rotation or long RP) over the past couple of years.

Padres pitching staff will need bodies due to free agency and injuries, so these are the most likely to be added to keep them in the system for further development.

The calculus on adds to the 40 man to protect from Rule 5 is always tough. The team not only has to identify "worthy" candidates then consider the probability that that specific player will be selected (not a lot are) and of those selected who are kept (fewer).

If there is a lockout ... an advantage to not have a player added to the 40 man so they can play in the minors at the season start (further development and be better "ready" to contribute when the ML season starts). Leave 40 man slots open and maybe select the "ready" options after the season starts?

Don't see a numbers issue on the 40 man ... with the FA and some "easy" releases (e.g. Wagner, McCoy) ... but hard to gauge the need for spaces to add FA.

Agree Musgrove just has too much upside not to protect ... especially since RP always seems to be the top selection targets. After that, don't really see anyone "compelling". I would toss in Pena (RHRP) into the discussion and maybe Moreno (RHRP).

Side: I have long held that Rule 5 should be eliminated ... the value is more "theory" than reality. Rather use the roster slots for more ML ready options and avoid the three minor league option sequence on players not near ML ready / our high impact options.

Looks like we signed a pitcher out of Japan named Tatsuya Nogami. From what I can gather he's 20 years old and was pitching at a college in Japan. I saw a report that said he can touch 97 and had a 0.36 ERA with 54 Ks in 25 1/3 innings this past season. The most interesting wrinkle is that the college he plays at plays with a semi-hardball instead of a regular baseball. It looks like it's basically the type of rubber ball you might see at public batting cages.

The Japan "World Series" is about to start.  Question is whether Japanese teams will post players immediately after their World Series to try to get our major league teams to sign them before the current CBA expires.  We might get a peek at what new ownership intends to do if this opportunity presents itself.  Don't expect a lot of top prospects to be available, but there a couple to keep your eye on - about 6 weeks away from the end of the current CBA.

It's getting to look like a straight up Mason Miller for Leo DeVries deal with the A's.  Henry Baez was just outrighted to the minors by the Athletics - he could still stay in their system but had a terrible year in 2026.  Eduarniel Nunez, RP, was already purchased by Baltimore from the A's and Braden Nett had an even worse year pitching in 2026 than Baez.

We know that DeVries will recover from his injury and could turn out to a superstar player (or not), but 4 years of Mason Miller (already a superstar) leading our bullpen is enough for me to say we definitely got the better of the deal in the short term (and maybe the long, if we end up trading Miller for a very good return in the future).

I really hope AJ is listening to any and all offers for Miller.

Whilst he started out on fire, he pretty much fizzled at the end.

If any team is willing to offer near ready prospects for that controllable time of Miller, gotta seriously consider it, as we have ZERO help coming from the minors any time soon and an aging, bloated payroll.

Always depends on the return. Doubt the new owners will start their run by not trying to win in 2027-28. So, if they traded Miller need to get more certain immediate impact return than the potential of prospects. Preller aways insists they want to build a team that contends every season ... not consistent with a trade of a star for prospects ... at least at this point.

To justify dealing Miller while trying to contend ... a multi-year (low cost) established mid-rotation starter (at a minimum) has to be part of the return and then augment that with near term prospects.

Remember the Padres had the second best record (behind MILW) in the 2nd half of 2026 with "only" King, Morejon, and France key departures ... but expect a push to sign them. Padres were very close to beating MILW in the playoffs ... so a legit contending team going forward.

Can make the argument the 2027-8 Padres are in critical need for SP and little coming internally BUT the RP is strong and some good potential in the minors ... so dealing Miller (or any other RP) for established SP might just make the team better.
