Minor League Discussion

It could work out this year that by the time we need to think about shutting down Paddack and Strahm that Richards and/or Lamet are ready

to make some starts.

Especially important if we are in contention come September.:)

I think that for Bauer or Kluber, you will need to wait until later in the season and CLE decides whether they are buyers or sellers. Plus, in that time frame SD will know better what they are as well. Does another arm really help this season because we are "close" or better to stand pat and go with the young guys. IF you are really hoping for Bauer, then hope for the Twins to start off hot and CLE to have a bad start, forcing CLE to start their rebuild early because their window is closing soon!

Here's a view from a writer at BP who watched a recent Logan Allen outing ...

https://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/article/48042/notes-from-the-field-its-only-86-in-phoenix/

Logan Allen, LHP, San Diego Padres

This was a very poor start, as the southpaw got tagged for six runs and failed to make it out of the first against a minor leaguer-laden Cubs lineup. Really struggled to command any of his pitches, catching the fat part of the zone repeatedly and paying the price. The fastball ran 90-92 and came in flat, while the changeups he turned over at 80-81 stayed flat and lacked any drop or fade. Three sliders (86-87) were thrown at the back foot of right-handed hitters, and none demonstrated the kind of bite to be competitive pitches. He rounded out the arsenal with a handful of mid-70s curveballs, a couple of which stayed up, including one that was absolutely crushed.

Not much of a surprise, we all knew he was hit HARD.

The more I think about it the more I am "ok" with going with some combination of Erlin/Mitchel on Saturday.  I want to see either Allen or Quantril start so we can see what we have with them, but a HORRIBLE performance shouldnt be rewarded.  Between Mitchell/Erlin/Warren you should be able to find the hot hand to slide into your rotation until one Allen/Quantril prove to be ready.

Padres are trying hard to find a position other than 3B for Hudson Potts.

He’s seeing time at 2b now apparently to go along with 1b.

At 6’4” he would be a tall second sacker!

It will be interesting where he sees most of his time on Defense this season.

I guess with all the shifting the classic 2B is not as important ... if a big guy can hit. MILW has Moustakas playing 2B and he is large with minimal range ... and in the past Jeff Kent and LeMahieu worked.

Maybe not this season but would not be surprised to see him getting a lot of reps in the OF since the AAA/AA OF prospects are not clear cut ML players .... Myers is around for 4 more seasons and the jury is still out on Reyes, Renfroe, Cordero ... so with 2 more MiL seasons he should be a decent candidate for the 25 man as an INF/OF bench option and if he is hitting morphing into a starting role. Actually without much 1B talent in the queue ... if Hosmer opts out in 4 years he may have two potential homes .... 1B/OF.

Side note: heard Seidler on the radio and at this point he not only expects Hosmer to fill out his full 8 year contract but suggested maybe even longer since he still will be "young". Long way to go but may be suggesting he would be willing to a contract redo at the point of the opt out. Additionally, he wants to keep these things in house with the player(s) but seemed very comfortable with the idea of keeping Tatis a Padre for his career (and commented Tatis at this point may be amenable to that idea). Both Tatis and Machado have the same agent and the fact that they did NOT make the "business decision" to option Tatis to get the extra control year may help the relationship.

No idea how this plays out but clearly Seidler (and the FO) have the long term vision going.

For those of you who don't make a habit of stopping by our front page on your way in here (shame on you!), we reported this morning that the Padres are converting Javy Guerra to the mound. With his athleticism and big arm, it's a really interesting opportunity for the 23-year-old to get a second chance.

Kevin also has a nice piece on Paddack's debut yesterday.

Is this true, or an Aprils Fools joke?

De verdad!
