Minor League Discussion

PreviousPage 69 of 297Next

Minor League opening day is 13 days away ... a lot of time for minor leaguers to sort out where the land but at this point not sure I can even come close to guessing the EP starting pitchers ... a lot of arm but virtually look like RP.

IF L.Allen gets the 5th slot with the Padres, Nix and Diaz are going on the injured list, Perdomo has been relegated to the pen, and don't know the status of Kennedy who was shut down awhile ago for "tired arm" as I recall ... then who fills the 5 SP slots? Quantrill can't handle all 5. Maybe Margevicius gets a bit jump? Enns used to be a SP ... still got to be a real reach on a couple logical AAA arms to start or a real surprise jump for some prospect most project as AA.

K Law had a nice piece on Patino today. He thinks he should be fast tracked for 2020 since throwing strikes with 4 pitches is no problem.

Suspect the El Paso rotation will include a mix from a group that includes Jerry Keel, Jesse Scholtens, Dillon Overton, Kyle Lloyd, and Chris Huffman.

An interesting Q&A in the Eric Longenhagen chat today at Fangraphs ...

David: More total future value: The three first-rounders the Padres signed in 2016 (Quantrill, Potts, Lauer), or the three future first-rounders (Rolison, Bishop, Bleday) they called but didn’t sign on day three?

Eric A Longenhagen: the latter group

Should be interesting to watch how the SP in the minors move during the season. Hard to tell if the "injured" return and when but that AAA group is not the future for the Padres. Given Preller's approach to aggressively challenge top prospects by moving them up the levels quickly ... may we see some mid-season jumps from the likes of Morejon, Baez, Avila to AAA while getting replaced by the likes of Gore and Patino (both seem to be getting a lot of hype as fast track pitchers). Padres do have a lot of quality arms and making room for them to get starts makes a case of not sitting too long with that group of AAA arms in contention to start the season.

Preller likes to fast track pitchers to an extent.  If you think about the fact that Paddack didnt even debut in High A until May of last year and is now in the OD rotation, that is pretty fast.  In the case of Gore/Patino no reason they dont start in Elsinore, and moved up to Amarillo around MidSeason.  Same with Morejon/Lawson/Baez/Avilla starting in Double-A, could move up to Triple-A midseason but I dont think Preller sees much of a difference between the two for pitchers.

One thing to keep in mind for "fast tracking" pitchers.  Assuming no trades and no new injuries (knock on wood), next Spring Training you would have all of the following competing for roster spots...
Luchessi, Lauer, Lamet, Paddack, Nix, Strahm, Quantril, Allen, Morejon, Lawson, Baez, Avilla, Gore, Patino, and Espinoza.  That is 15(!) young starters all of whom were top 15 prospects in their org at one time, 7 were top 100 prospects.  So fast tracking works to an extent, but we only have 5 in a rotation.

I believe the Pads will be the first team to go with a 6-man rotation starting next year as follows:

#1 -- Paddack

#2 -- Strahm

#3 -- Dinelson

#4 -- Luchessi

#5 -- Lauer

#6 -- L. Allen/Morejon/Gore

Gore,  Morejon, Patino & even Espinoza (to a lesser degree) could each pull a Paddack and just outright earn a spot with a great season this year in the minors and terrific spring trainings next year.  Hell, even Luchessi and Lauer's spots could be in jeopardy if 3 of those 4 guys reach their potential and maximize their production.

On the outside looking in: possibly Quantrill, definitely Nix, Baez, Avila, & Lawson, maybe Mason Thompson makes a big jump this year in the minors.

You forgot Garrett Richards.

After paying him $15 mil he will be starting next season.

Off the thread, I don’t know if it was posted, but the prospect games v the Mexico City Red Devils are on YouTube.

Search Padres v Diablos. They are great! We are loaded!

I believe the Pads will be the first team to go with a 6-man rotation starting next year as follows:

#1--Garrett Richards (as David N. mentioned...)  - INNNINGS LIMIT

#2 -- Paddack - YEAR AFTER INNINGS LIMIT

#3 -- Strahm - YEAR AFTER INNINGS LIMIT

#4 -- Lamet - INNINGS LIMIT

#5 -- Luchessi

#6 -- Lauer/L. Allen

#7 -- Morejon/Gore.... etc

I agree.  The timing of the roster going to 26 couldn't be better for a Padres team with 2 SP's coming off TJ, plus 2 more (Strahm & Paddack) really stretching out after maybe 135 +/- Innings limit this year.  With so many arms & (this is key), probably not too much separating #5 from #6 next year, it makes sense to project 6 guys to 27 Starts each vs. 5 to 32-33 most of them can't reach.

It's way too early to speculate on this, but it's entirely possible that this year's O.D. starter Lauer could have a very tough time staying in even a 6-man rotation next year!

That's why what's currently going on with the #5 spot (3rd start of season) is driving me so crazy...  Pads ownership selecting Tatis & moving up his free agency timetable to put best team on field, spending 60 MM+ 2019, 70 MM 2020 on 3 best position players, but can't/won't trade from massive pitching surplus on #1 Farm to plug a glaring quality/depth hole?

I'm mostly just frustrated... realize it's not that simple.  But anyone who says Kluber, Bauer, etc is "blocking" a young arm doesn't get it.  They can start for any team.  They are playoff starters for any team.  They increase the competition for the last starting spot for the time they are here... that's a positive, not a negative.  You either get a very front-line guy like that via trade (my preference) OR a total 1-year stopgap.  I personally think Keuchel is not a great option; LH, control not power P, probably 3-4 year contract for guy who had 1 phenomenal year.  Not my $, so if they do get him, I'll be thrilled, but I'm really warming up to Bauer...

Adding a SP of that caliber gives Pads a legit "puncher's chance" this year; if they somehow got the wildcard... guess who would start that game.  More importantly, protects the young arms & puts them all in better position to succeed.  Bauer specifically; stated with certainty he's going to only sign 1 year deals.... if you put a qualifying offer on him, is any team going to give up the draft pick/s to sign him for just 1 year?  If so, great.  If not, better:  Bring him back for year 3... 🙂
