Interesting little article over at BA (behind paywall) re 9 prospects who impressed in winter ball.  Three are Padres:  Tatis, G Reyes and Olivares (whom they refer to as a potential 5 tool player).

That'll be one crazy defensive outfield in AA with Olivares and Reed.

I have a feeling that I've asked this before and forgotten ... who is "G Reyes"?  I guess it's this guy ...

Also ... interesting that not only was Javy Guerra the MVP of the Carribean Series ... but Allan Cordoba seemed to me to be next in line (he also hit .389 for the Series)!

Note: FTJ did not play for Estrellas in this Series ... I guess that'd be too much?  Seems like if he'd have played, the DR team might have won 🙂

You've got the right Reyes. Should  see him in SD this year.

Gerardo was the other reliever who came over with Castillo in the Myers trade. Interesting story as a guy who grew up down around Brownsville, Texas which is decidedly NOT the baseball hotbed part of the state. After he committed to college, the program collapsed and he wound up kinda kicking around before signing with the Rays as an UDFA. He has BIG velocity, but even watching him for a few minutes will make your arm hurt in sympathy. He's managed to make the all-out mechanics work so far. He MIGHT way 160 pounds soaking wet.

Couldn't agree more. The amount of torque on that elbow is insane. The only saving grace is that he is so light.

With the signing of Machado and the existence of Hosmer ... 1B/3B seem to be locked down for quite a while with two players that go post every day.

Should we now see France (AAA) and Potts (AA) getting more exposure off 3B ... OF time?

Don't really see any other pure 3B or 1B sitting in the minors that the Padres would worry about expanding their versatility.

Well if you take any stock into what Hacksaw says (I know I had to go there) they are going to work Potts at 2B. Personally, if Potts has a big year, he becomes a sought after prospect and could be a key part in a deal for a pitcher. Or he becomes primary insurance in the infield

France... no.  He should be the 3B at Triple-A.  Just like Craig, France should be the backup if Machado hits the DL (even if it is mainly Kinsler starting).

If the Padres see the infield of Hosmer/Urias/Tatis/Machado for the next five years, it doesnt necessarily mean they need to move players like Potts or Edwards to a different position, but rather it gives them flexibility to trade someone.  Potts as a 3B has way more value than as a 2B.  He is still really young, and if he has an All-Star caliber year in Amarillo, he would probably be a Top 100 prospect, and could be used as a main piece in acquiring an ace.

If you havent already, listen to the most recent BA podcast.  They talk about the "now what" with the Padres.

I guess I see it differently on Potts (to a lesser degree France) .... in an era when versatility is valuable if the Padres can expand Potts beyond just a 3B (3B/2B/1B/OF) it exponentially expands his value to the Padres as a back-up or as a trade chip. As a 3B only, unless he develops into an elite hitter, his value is limited.

Even for the Padres, Potts on normal progression is AA this year and AAA next then hopefully ML ready in 2021 ... on track with Kinsler's departure (and likely Garcia is also gone). If he adds OF to his skill set, gives flexibility if the other corner OF options don't fully develop or opens up dealing one or more of them as they get more costly and with less control ... dealing a veteran may yield a better return. Basically, Padres get more options on structuring the ML roster. Can't hurt.

Note: totally different on Edwards (or any of the A ball types) who, even if they end up developing, will not be a factor for 4-5 years ... a lot can happen before then. Once they get to AAA/AA and it is clear they are blocked at the prime position, then consider position versatility.

You would be better off conducting a survey of 15 random Masai tribesmen in Kenya than asking Hacksaw for information about a Padres minor league player. Hudson Potts and I will log the same number of innings at second base this year.

In terms of what you do with them... exactly what you were going to do otherwise. France is mostly a 3B who can play enough 1B to be an emergency option there. You develop Potts as a 3B until he demonstrates that either (a) he absolutely can't make it work there, or (b) his bat is so great you have to move him to an OF corner to get it to the big leagues. Neither of those things will happen before the end of this season.
