Quote from fenn68 on March 1, 2019, 1:27 pmMLBPipeline just released the Padre's 2019 Top 30 and ranked SD as the #1 farm system (by a wide margin).
No great surprises but some movement:
New names: Marcano, INF (#21); O. Hernandez, SP (#28); Hunt, C (#30)
Dropped from 2018's list: Coleman, SP (#26); Little, OF (#27); Avila, SP (#29)
Biggest movements:
+8 Potts (#15)
+6 Campusano (#18)
+5 A.Allen (#20), Olivares (#23)
+4 Naylor (#11), Edwards (#14), Miller (#26)
-4 Reed (#17)
-5 Nix (#19), Arias (#25)
-8 Lawson (#29)
-10 E.Ruiz (#27)

Quote from fenn68 on March 2, 2019, 9:28 amHeard an interview with Green yesterday which was primarily about the ML options for this year but he did drop a couple of very positive comments on two minor leaguers:
1. Torrens who he said has made tremendous improvement as a catcher and can be a factor for the future;
2. Naylor who was extolled for his hitting skills
Just interesting that he would insert them both into his commentary even though the minor league players were not the theme. They must have made a very positive impression on him this spring (or on others in the organization).
That DH in the NL is looking better for the Padres with Naylor, Reyes, A.Allen, Mejia all looking as "hitters" but wanting in the field.

Quote from David Jay on March 4, 2019, 10:02 amWith the full minor league spring training getting under way tomorrow, the Padres announced 13 players were reassigned this morning. Looking like minor league camp will start in the vicinity of 195-200 players, a slightly bump up from last year's group. With 56 active players still in big league camp, looking at something on the order of 60 releases in the coming month.

Saw him pitching today... yikes! Serious velocity, but like a "how not to teach your kid to pitch" demo...
Potential, but agree with (announcer)... looks more like a thrower than a pitcher at times. Not MLB "command" ready from that outing.

Quote from David Jay on March 5, 2019, 8:10 amLooks like minor league camp opens with 190 total players today. We'll get the full list up ASAP. The only noteworthy last-minute changes: Allen Craig was announced as reassigned to minor league camp yesterday but doesn't appear on the initial camp roster and Vijay Miller was released yesterday. Looks like a few younger Dominican players who finished last year on the DL will spend spring at the Dominican complex.
Unless there's a change I don't have, that would leave a group of 57 in the Dominican to start the year. This is the first time under the current player development group that none of the previous summer's J2 signees were brought stateside for spring training in Peoria.
