So what should we make of Buddy Reeds season over all?

He was "so good" at LE I almost want to just completely ignore his time in SA.

But he was "so bad" at SA I'm not sure I can.

I realize advancing to AA can be an adjustment....but he "really" struggled there.

What do yo guys think?

3 hits and 2 SBs for Peoria today ...

We heard a variety of concerns about his ability to do damage with good fastballs in Double-A because of some mechanical issues. He's already shown once that he can make changes, but I'm inclined to believe it's pretty unknowable whether he has that ability a second time until we see him out there either doing it or not...

He's an incredible talent, he is committed to the work, and even if he's only moderately effective with the bat, his skills in the field and on the basepaths are enough to give him LOTS of benefit of the doubt.

Thanks...that's what i needed to hear.

I guess he will be one of the top story lines next year then....can he adjust again and be a star?

Or does he just survive with the bat and become a defensive minded speedster?

I know i'll be watching closely.....

Reed will be an interesting follow for the next few years. Hopefully as a POTENTIAL 5 tool talent he does not follow Gettys path and just fade away in AA.

If he hits even marginally, his defense / speed could get a ML reserve OF role.

I’m hoping he’s more than that.

I want him as our leadoff hitting CF in 2020/21 If Margot doesn’t take a big step forward next year.

Me too ... but would not discount a rebound my Margot just yet and we should see all of 2019 and early 2020 to find out.

Margot just turned 24 with 2 years of MLB under his belt and does not go FA until 2023 so expect they will nurse his development for a few years. (aside Jankowski who is 27 also is a FA in 2023 so both have four more years of low cost control).

Reed is 23 ... does not need to be protected until next winter .. and if he develops on a "normal" progression we could see him in late 2020 and to start 2021 (bumping Jankowski?) initially serving as the "4th OF" unless something happens in the corners.

I would not ignore the potential in Oliveras who likely will be in AA with Reed and also can play CF ... he is only 22 and has that potential 5 tool profile. Plus the guy I am interested in seeing move up the ladder is Rosario who is just turning 19 and will be in A+ ... he might surprise and leapfrog them all by late 2021.

Margot - Reed - Oliveras - Rosario ..... good chance one (or more) end up a plus CF for the Padres.

This is sort of a one off question / observation .... the case of A J Brown.

Padres drafted Brown out of HS in 2016 .... signed him to a "token" bonus as I recall (he was locked into going to Ole Miss as a WR) ... Padres have had him on the "inactive list" since he was signed ... and heard reports that he has worked out during extended ST since he signed.

Crossed my mind since saw him playing for Ole Miss today and the announcers were giving him glowing reviews as a WR AND mentioned he could excel if he chose MLB (apparent major power potential). He apparently is ticketed as a high NLF pick. That opens the door to a number of questions:

1. Likely he will sign with the NFL given his talent (and the bonus money) and given the NFL not a lot of time to double in the minors. Most reasonable is the the Padres wait for him to get cut / injured ending his NFL run and bring him in as a baseball player.

2. Padres have seen him apparently in extended ST for a couple of years ... depending on what round he gets drafted in the NFL would (could) they offer him a baseball bonus to forego the NFL if he projects that well?

3. Not sure on the rules, but the time "inactive" should not count as minor league time and his clock would start when placed on a minor league active roster ... corollary is how long can they keep putting him on the "inactive" if he goes NFL?

Was a big HS baseball talent ... will be that long shot to forgo the NFL ... but someone to not forget.

He has not been part of the instructional program since he was drafted.

The club can continue to renew his contract six times (i.e., through the 2022 season) before he would become a minor league free agent. He will be Rule 5 eligible for the first time in 2020.

Thanks. Very low odds on him turning to baseball unless he pulls a Tim Tebow after his NFL career ends and even a lower set of odds he makes a ML impact BUT there is always a chance and he will be an interesting follow.

Expect he will get drafted in the NFL after this season and be a on a roster for at least a couple of years (he is a top talent and should go high). Rule 5 should not be an issue even if some team remembers him as a baseball prospect ... would not give up a ML roster slot (and $50K). The 6 year FA after 2022 could be covered by giving him a 40 man roster slot (if he showed up a season or two before and looked worth the gamble) or just work a minor league contract with him.

Not going to happen but always like to cover the options.

I saw this note at BP today ...

Friday, November 2nd

Edward Olivares, OF, Padres (VWL, Aragua): 4-5, RBI

In any other system, Olivares would probably be garnering far more attention. He’s an extremely athletic outfielder with a bevy of above-average to plus tools. His feel to hit in games has improved quite a bit over the last two years and there’s a chance he could be an across-the-board contributor at his peak.

Saturday, November 3rd

Edward Olivares, OF, Padres (VWL, Aragua): 2-5, R, 3B, K

More hits for Olivares, which shouldn’t be all that shocking. He’s technically already “broken out” among prospect hounds, but the 2019 season could be the year he really breaks out among a broader audience.
