Grading the farm systems of all 30 MLB teams after the trade deadline

San Diego Padres
Grade: A
Rank: 1 of 30

Top 14 Prospects: 1. Fernando Tatis Jr., SS; 2. MacKenzie Gore, LHP; 3. Francisco Mejía, C; 4. Luis Urías, 2B; 5. Buddy Reed, OF; 6. Chris Paddack, RHP; 7. Adrian Morejon, LHP; 8. Jacob Nix, RHP; 9. Michel Baez, RHP; 10. Ryan Weathers, LHP; 11. Logan Allen, LHP; 12. Josh Naylor, 1B/LF; 13. Cal Quantrill, RHP; 14. Hudson Potts, 3B.

The Padres have the best farm system in baseball. They have the best overall quality, and they have more depth than any other team, from the top to the bottom of their system.

The reason the Padres have the quality is that they have been picking near the top of the amateur draft; spending more money than most teams in the international market; and have traded several veterans for quality over quantity, which is GM A.J. Preller’s calling card when it comes to major-league deals. The best trade Preller has made in his career is when he dealt James Shields to the White Sox in 2016 and got then-teenage infielder Fernando Tatis Jr. He made a similar deal at this trade deadline when he dealt Brad Hand and Adam Cimber for another singular prospect, this time Francisco Mejía, one of the best offensive catching prospects in the entire sport.

The Padres have been drafting well, loading up on top left-handed pitching prospects like MacKenzie Gore and Ryan Weathers, and are succeeding internationally with players like second baseman Luis Urías, who they signed out of Mexico. They’ve been drafting athletes and hitting big on them, as with Buddy Reed, their second-round pick in 2016, who had jaws dropping during the Futures Game.

Tatis is the crown jewel of their system, with one of the game’s most respected evaluators recently comparing him to Manny Machado. I won’t go that far, but I definitely think he has future All-Star written all over him.

The Padres’ ownership deserves credit for allowing Preller and his baseball operations staff to carry out their blueprint, despite all the losing you have to endure at the major-league level for this kind of plan to work. Then you have to credit Preller for not wavering, and staying true to his commitment to building the Padres from the ground up.

There is no doubt the Padres are going to be legitimate contenders soon, and it could come as early as 2020. That’s a huge tribute to the progress they’ve made over the last two years.

I read that article and questioned the choice of Reed at 5.  Maybe 15, but definitely not 5.

Sounds like it depends on whether or not you, or someone you trust, saw him at the Futures Game ...

Setting up for some interesting prospects to showcase in 2019. Guess they do not protect France ... gamble a guy who was a AA 3B for most of the year would not get selected (or kept).

ST for SP should be a battle assuming some of the current crop are not dealt. Allen will not be on the 40 man so a bit of a disadvantage. Plus Padres may want to give some more time to sort through the others ... 2019 is still a transition year. In the mix:

LHP: Richard, Erlin, Strahm, Lauer

RHP: Nix, Kennedy, Lamet, Perdomo, Lockett, Paddack, Quantrill, Mitchell

Yep, easy to eliminate (in our minds) but getting 5 out of those 12 to start 2019 make sense for final evaluations. Side benefit is holding on to that “extra” year on Allen if the call-up is lagged a month or so.

I think you forgot Lucchesi.    I really hope they give Strahm a shot, he could really be a good starter after he builds up his innings

Here's the mlb.com look at 2019 rotation options ...

Whelp, here we go! Luis Urias is getting the call tomorrow. A little unexpected since I think we all figured he'd stick with El Paso through the playoffs, but hopefully he's here to stay.

Man it's pretty encouraging to see what Gabriel Arias has done the last few weeks!

Talk about finishing strong.

Only 18 years old and starting to show his bat may not be an issue.

Hey El Paso, your team and fans can go F yourselves.  We're bringing up Urias and we don't give a crap about your playoff run

With Love,

AJ Preller

This!  What's up with this??? 🙁

Who are we moving off the roster to make room?

Is there any chance AJ is sending Pirela or Spangy down to EP?

Then it wouldn't be a very big drop off anyway.

I don't think Cordoba has been put on the 60 day dl yet, so my assumption is him.  As far as the 25 man, I'd assume Asuaje since he's only a 2B
