Quote from David Jay on April 6, 2018, 3:37 pmA few miscellaneous roster notes:
Hansel Rodriguez becomes the first minor leaguer to the DL from the opening day rosters. His velocity was no bueno when we saw him near the end of XST... you'll note that his cousin replied very quickly to our Twitter post on the matter. I wouldn't trust that's going to be the final word.
Trevor Megill will join the Storm bullpen, giving themOutfielder Josh Magee has opted to retire. A fifth-round pick out of high school as a two-sport guy, Magee never made it out of short-season ball except for a one-game cameo in Elsinore last year. Not unreasonable to think that, at 21 years old, he'll get a look from a college football program somewhere.
A few guys who weren't in spring training have been brought over from the Dominican complex for extended:
Emmanuel Clase
Yordi Francisco
Gabriel Morales
Anderson Polanco
Elvis Sabala
Gilberto VizcarraAfter spending spring training stateside, infielder Bryan Torres has been sent to the DSL for their extended program.
As always, if you've got questions, we're happy to field them!

Quote from David Jay on April 8, 2018, 6:40 amIf it were me, I'd want to get him away least 50 PAs and really push himself physically. I don't think the organization is going to let it go that long though. (For the record, 20 games is the longest he could be on a rehab assignment.)

Or does Renfroe go to AAA?
First guess would be Szczur (see my 25 man roster post) but Szczur would be at risk (if not gone now) upon the return of Myers. So IF Myers takes Szczur's spot ... might allow of a longer wait for Cordero (another 10 days or so) that could give Renfroe or Villanueva or Spangenberg or Headley the extra games to determine who should remain and who should go.
The way Renfroe has not been hitting ... he could be at the greater risk plus he is limited to a corner OF spot and with Myers - Margot - Pirela - Cordero eating up all the OF playing time ... turning Renfroe into a 5th OF (like Szczur) with limited playing time makes little sense.
If Szczur goes before Myers returns (possible) ... and if Cordero is not considered back to game speed ... might see Jankowski up to bridge between Szczur and Myers.
A lot of ways for this to play out ... including potentially more than one deal.

Quote from Fred on April 9, 2018, 8:11 amGuys, is Javy Guerra back? He's started out very well for El Paso so far. Of course Austin Hedges did great things in El Paso so I don't know. I really don't.
Appreciate some insight here. Has anyone been around Guerra lately? Is he different? In a good way? Is he on some good meds? Not a joke. I happen to be on Prozac and it's helping me.

Quote from David Jay on April 9, 2018, 9:03 amDon't have a lot of specific insight yet. His demeanor in Peoria seemed to be pretty much what we've seen before. He's a focused worker on the field, and that didn't change in any noticeable way. John will be out in El Paso next week, so we'll have some more notes and observations at that point.
It is worth noting that small sample size applies even more than normal when you're talking about home run totals after a series with the wind blowing out at Cashman Field.
