Minor League Discussion
Quote from fenn68 on July 6, 2026, 2:46 amSome interesting prospects developing in the lower minors but likely need a couple of years to be useful trade chips. Sure some teams would take them now in a trade but more so in deals that are shedding salary / FA to be ... that would be the added value to the buyer. At this point, think only Salas is a prospect another team would actively want and be willing to offer some quality in return.
Given this team and place in the standings ... would not deal Salas for a rental no matter how good.
On Wideman ... looks to have a high floor based on base running and defense (see Johnson and Bowen recently) ... 4th OF type. Can he develop into more ... maybe ... but until he shows more he maybe that frustrating 4.5 tool guy labeled with "if he could only hit". Still, Padres don't have much in the way of OF prospects in the upper minors and even with Merrill and Tatis locked in for the foreseeable future there is a path for Wideman to land on the 26 man roster. A bench piece with speed and defense at league minimum can survive in the ML (Travis Jankowski?).

For a lead off hitter.
All he has to do is prove he can hit it a higher level and he can’t do that until he gets there. One thing our team had always lacked is a true lead hitter with on base skills and speed.
I’m sure hoping Wideman is that guy

Quote from ultratvfan on July 6, 2026, 6:52 amWe have good prospects for now. The reason our farm system lacks a lot of good prospects, like the dodger have, is that AJP keeps trading away too many of them, especially for rentals.

Quote from Randy Manese on July 6, 2026, 7:24 amKeep an eye on Jose Altuve-sized Eddson Martinez. Just starting to blossom at age 18 after 2+ years in the Dominican, but got to like the fact that he's still hitting over .400 in over 101 plate appearances.
Seems to have adjusted to the ACL very well and likely will get a shot at Lake Elsinore before their season ends. Has not shown much power yet but seems to be getting stronger as his extra base percentage keeps moving up. Does not have Wideman speed but should be a better than average base stealer who runs the bases well. Likely limited to LF because of arm strength but has range to play CF. A throw-back outfielder to when batting averages and on base percentages were just as important as smashing HR's with a .220 or below batting average.

On the other hand, Padres have been in the playoffs four of the last six seasons and have the 5th most wins in the NL over that period (by a good margin over the 6th team). Not convinced keeping those prospects would have yielded more wins than the pieces acquired. Some deals good ... some deals bad ... but net?
In that same 6 year run ... World Series winners were LAD (3 times), Houston, Texas, and Atlanta. Basically the Padres and 25 other teams failed ... so no reason to isolate on the Padres. Where any of those winners littered with Padre prospects?
TB, Baltimore, Milwaukee all covent prospects ... and have good prospects ... they get to the playoffs (except BALT) but still don't win the WS.
TB / MILW win with their prospects and lose in the playoffs ... SD wins with adds via trade and FA and lose in the playoffs. If you like results ... no difference.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 6, 2026, 12:13 pmI see all the time people saying we should "do what Milwaukee,Baltimore and Tampa do"!
Well,we DID!
For decades..... and we never won anything and rarely made the playoffs.
Now we make the playoffs almost every year and those teams haven't won a ring either so.....
I agree it's time to hold on to some prospects and build the Farm back up.
But I'd have no problem continuing this process once that's done.
IMO it's always better to have a "major league All Star" than an 19 year old phenom in Single A.
Yes,sometimes that player will make you regret the decision you made....but 9.5 times out of 10 you're better off "at the major league level".
Which in the end is all that matters.
Looking back I don't remember any Farm system Championships we won when we regularly had a top 5 system.
May have missed it though....

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 6, 2026, 12:16 pmLike the DeVries/Miller deal.
Yes DeVries may end up great....but meantime we have arguably the best Closer in the game and if all else fails you could still trade him for a top 50 prospect plus.
Fans tend to forget you can change direction with a young, cheap superstar like Miller if you decide to.

Quote from BoosterSD on July 6, 2026, 12:47 pmThis was a needed strategy under previous/cheaper owners. For awhile now, we have owners that are willing to have larger salaries. So prospects now become monies for ML players.
Sure, it would be nice to have a better balance of home grown and FA MLers. I think we will get there.
Get the parade first though!!

Quote from fenn68 on July 6, 2026, 1:22 pmIn the short run (2027-2029) Padres may have little choice but to focus on building up the minors then make the strategic decision on trying to win with internal prospects or trade them for veteran ML talent.
- Padres have little to deal for IMPACT ML veterans (except maybe dealing Salas) ... other teams can easily offer better prospects for top talent
- Looking at the potential FA class ... not much and that will mean the limited talent will require a very high price tag.
- Padres have a significant number for FA after this season ... plus some opt outs ... plus a good chance Pivetta / Musgrove are just injury losses. A lot of holes to fill with many of the Padres FA bodies low cost today.
- Trying to bring back this team will require an INCREASE in payroll (which is currently Top 10) ...
- Today we don't know the rules of engagement in the new CBA ... or much 2027 will be played
- Machado, Bogaerts, Cronenworth are all heading into their mid-30 ... expect decline production at some point ... just don't know when.
Of course two opinions:
- Given little internal talent coming ... poor FA options ... do you shoot for the moon in 2026 and trade what limited prospects the Padres have for whatever you can get that might help now ... and somehow gain a playoff slot? Then likely fall in to the abyss for a longer run.
- Looking at the same landscape ... do you move what you can off the ML roster to add prospects to maybe accelerate the next phase of playoff contention?
How far out of playoff contention should they be to go with option 1 at the end of the month? Do they clean the house of prospects on a 100 to 1 shot at making the playoffs and a 1000 to one shot of a World Series appearance?

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 6, 2026, 1:41 pmOur best chance with Pivetta is that he picks up his option due to his injury and stays healthy and productive next season.
If he had stayed healthy this year he was surely gone.
Silver lining?
I think our system is better than we get credit for but only because of some guys who weren't ranked high that are really playing well.
Could help with trades if we go that route as other teams Scouts don't just look at the top 100 prospects...they actually watch the players.
Guys like Ryan Wideman,Alex McCoy,Winyer Chourio,Kerrington Cross,Jesus Castro...all looking good and in most cases not even in our top 30
