Minor League Discussion

PreviousPage 362 of 363Next

I just read that Marlins Triple-A player IF Cody Morrisette was released by the Marlins and is a free agent. He was hitting .283 avg upon release. Earlier this season he was hitting over .300 avg. I don't know about his defense. I think he should be signed to Triple-A El Paso.

Thoughts?

Any scouting report on LE SS Jose Verdugo? He is an 18 year old SS who was signed last year and was in the DSL (and hit well). For an 18 year old appears to be doing very well in low A.

Haven't driven up  to Elsinore to see that very exciting team but I've read that despite his very good bat to ball skills Verdugo has a smallish frame and currently doesn't generate much power in his swing.  Not as good defensively as Quintana and has good but not exceptional speed on the base paths.  Profiles best at 2b but will have to gain a little good weight and some wiry strength to not be overpowered at higher levels in the minors.

A Kasen Wells (OF at Ft Wayne) kind of guy hitting-wise but a little more valuable because he plays the infield.  Doing well for his age and experience level and hope he continues to have a good year.  We'll see how he holds up in the dog days of summer - expect him to be in LE all year.

Quintana is the kid we got from Milwaukee....last year?

Is he a legitimate prospect?

We seem to have SO few of those. Definitely think we should keep those and try to add more by moving on from guys like Adam, Pivetta, Matsui, Peralta and not that anyone would take them but Cronenworth and Bogaerts.

I'd even sell Miller if another team is dumb enough to offer, say, a top 3 ranked MLB prospect 🙄. Capable closers are a dime a dozen.

Of our 3 top pitching prospects, Mendez looks like he's finally back from his injury while Schoolcraft pitched his best game of the season.  Mayfield finding out it's harder the second time around in the Midwest League with hitters sitting on his average FB and hitting 3 solo HRs off of him for the only runs he gave up in the game.  Though Mayfield would be ready for promotion to San Antonio but last two games show he has to learn to make adjustments before moving up.

Regarding other possible starters who are a long long way away, Castro continues to do well and Zac Qin is ready to move on from his rehab starts in the ACL to join Castro at Lake Elsinore.  Montgomery and Fitterer are falling back while Schmitt looks like he might have some upside.

I would also keep an eye on Lan-Hong Su down in ACL. Just turned 19 in his first season stateside being signed out of Taiwan. Signed for a nice bonus last October and very impressive his first few appearances in the ACL. Probably needs to bulk up a bit but has time.

If Su is moved up and joins Castro, Qin, Schoolcraft, Schmitt, Chourio and Balzer in the rotation, this will possibly our best group of upside pitchers we have in our minors.  Balzer, however, may be moved up to Ft Wayne when it is determined Su is ready but still the others have flashed skills albeit sometimes inconsistently.

Ryan Wideman needs to be in AA.

He's 23 and dominating A Ball....I see no reason for him to see FW.

Speaking of promotions....I was expecting several after the promotions of Taylor and Bowen to the major league Club....did I miss the corresponding minor league moves?

23 in November.

I would be a bit more cautious and step him up to A+ for the remainder of 2026. Although he is excelling in LE ...  "only" the #12 hitter in the league ... so not that dominant. Remember Alex McCoy was outstanding in LE ... and for a short spell this year in A+ but once A+ managers figured him out he has been struggling. The jump to the much more experienced AA arms (with a lot more consistent spin pitches) likely will eat up a player who when drafted had worries about contact. Don't really care about his age ... want him to develop at this own pace.

Not a big issue if he makes the ML at 24 or 25 as long as he is ready to handle it.
