Now sounding like it *could* be serious. They're looking for a fracture or ligament damage.
I love when people say things like this and don't list the source of their information.

I love it when people don't use Google like a normal adult.

Quote from sportwarrior on July 20, 2018, 11:54 amOut for the rest of the season, by the way.
A day after being named the #1 prospect in baseball, no less. Fantastic.
EDIT: Still possible he doesn't. An MRI this weekend might change the outlook.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 20, 2018, 12:25 pmWas it a head first slide...and if so why don’t teams ban the damn things already?
If it helps at all it is minimal and certainly not worth the risk of injury.
IMO it limits the runners ability to take the next base on a bad throw anyway.
I just don’t get it!

I don't get all the outrage over head first slides. As if you can't jam your ankle or knee if the lower leg gets locked up going into a bag.
It was.

Structurally speaking, fingers and wrists are more susceptible to injury than a knee or an ankle. It's just flat out easier to get one caught in some kind of weird/freak situation involving the bag or cleats or a glove or whatever, no matter how experienced the player. Slides, on the other hand, are typically safer both because the body parts involved are more robust and because experienced big leaguers have long been conditioned to use techniques like pop up slides that carry momentum up and over a bag rather than straight into it.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 20, 2018, 4:05 pmI would wager 9 of 10 injuries while sliding are head first.
Also,it doesn’t get you there any faster so why risk it?
Lastly as I pointed out, many times the runner slides headfirst while stealing and misses a chance to advance another base on a bad throw.
Its literally why the pop up slide was invented.
Maybe the better question would be “why slide headfirst at all”?
P.S.As a baseball player would you rather have a fractured finger/broken wrist or a sprained ankle?

1 in 300 vs 1 in 450 for injuries from face/feet first slides. A person stealing a base might need to protect his speed more than his digits, it's short term vs long term consequences.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 20, 2018, 4:48 pmAnd the severity of those injuries?
How is an injury defined with those numbers?
1 in 300 that cause a player to miss weeks/months vs 1 in 450 that result in a twisted ankle that doesn’t even require a DL stint?
If you can explain the “advantage” to sliding headfirst that explains why players risk even the slightest increased risk in injury that would help.
