And is he a bit old for the competition he's playing against? Will that too catch up to him?
He is only 21 so not really old for the league ... plus he is out of a JC so the competition in low A is step up.
Athletic (for a BIG guy) ... yes but at this point not all that proficient as a 1B ... we will see if he improves over time. Being athletic and being good defensively at any position doesn't necessarily link.
Will the higher levels of the minors be too challenging ... TBD. Many believed that Sanabria would struggle in the upper minors yet he is hitting >.300 in AA. On the other hand, the upper minors are littered with prospects who were projected as "elite" hitters that ended up under-performing.

Quote from fenn68 on May 31, 2025, 1:00 amSomeone to keep an eye on … Luis Patino … progressing well in his rehab now in AA. Still young, non-roster and was an elite prospect. Padres will have an interesting call after the season on adding him to the 40 man … same for Knehr. A lot of good arms that need to be protected… some trade chips?

Quote from Randy Manese on May 31, 2025, 5:23 amBesides the two you mentioned above, old friend Wolf is showing well after his promotion back to El Paso. We also have the next wave of potential starters in Haynes, Nett and Mendez eligible for Rule 5 plus some strong relief candidates in Hawkins, Castro and Pena, although the latter has struggled this year at El Paso. Longer shots to be protected are the oft-injured but great stuff Paplham and not ready for prime time Pinales and Varmette.
With Morgan and Rodriguez already on the 40 man, could see a major turnover in the pen although only Haynes and Wolf of the aforementioned group is left-handed. Peralta will want to stay, but the Padres hope he goes; Suarez will seek another team for sure. Gillaspie should be gone and Hart has got to show more to stay on the roster as either a SP or RP. Hoeing and Brito should be back, but Padres may roll the dice on the latter if they need a 40 man slot. Jacob fighting to stay on roster but don't think Marinaccio has shown enough to be part of the bullpen. It will be an interesting year as the Padres try to maneuver around the return to health of Musgrove and Darvish but the possible losses of both Cease and King; still think they will make a real effort to sign King and hope he decides to further his career with us.

Quote from fenn68 on May 31, 2025, 7:17 amFrom a position player standpoint not much to consider for a roster slot … Sanabria and Valenzuela … depending on how the Padres backfill all the pending FA. Would put McCoy and Ornelas on the bubble if space is needed.
LF could be a home for Sheets if Arraez is resigned opening DH for Sanabria if ready.
Maldonado is likely not resigned and Diaz is on a mutual option that usually means FA. So with the shortage of catchers of quality around and little love for Campusano … chance for Valenzuela as the call-up if not #2.

Quote from Randy Manese on May 31, 2025, 12:57 pmDominican Summer League starts next Monday with the DSL Padres Brown team at the DSL Athletics complex in Boca Chica while the DSL Padres Gold team hosts the DSL Cleveland Mendoza team at the Padres Dominican Republic complex. A couple of interesting middle infielders to watch in Jhoan de la Cruz and Deivid Coronil with LHP Carlos Alvarez the only other prospect that received over $900K to sign. Padres have signed a ton of players over the past 2-3 years but most are just dartboard throws. Always curious to see which of the $10K or less players emerge to be a prospect. Regular season lasts until 19 August.

Quote from Randy Manese on June 2, 2025, 12:01 pmBoth DSL teams open the season with come from behind victories! Probably won't happen very often as the Padres Gold team is stacked with the best prospects while the Padres Brown team typically struggles to even reach the .500 mark. Games start at 8 am our time and you can follow game day results through the Dominican Summer league website. Teams play everyday but Wednesday and Sunday.

Quote from Randy Manese on June 4, 2025, 7:02 amMayfield projected to start today for the Storm after not pitching since 13 May because of shoulder discomfort. Hopefully, it was just precautionary and he continues developing as we hope. Similarly, Reiss Knehr, who was the El Paso closer and was pitching very effectively has not made an appearance since 21 May. Wasn't put on the injury list and haven't seen any recent information as to why he has not made an appearance. Until this happened, looked like he had a chance to make the major league roster.
