Minor League Discussion

A starting quartet of Baez, Haynes, Nett and Lizarraga is potentially one of the better ones we've ever had in the system on one team.  If we can get one or two of these to develop along with our higher ranked pitchers at Lake Elsinore or below, this will really help out the AAV in the future.

It's possible another body or two will drop from the EP once the DFA situation is sorted out and Snider could come up from Ft. Wayne.  Lots of bodies cut from MLB teams over the last couple of days, so reinforcements to a projected light hitting offense may be on its way before the AA season opens.

San Diego Padres Daily Farm Report: March 28

On the pitching side, the Padres received an excellent outing from Ryan Bergert. Bergert, 25, made his first career Triple-A start and turned in four solid innings before turning things over to the bullpen. Bergert showed good four-seam fastball velocity, sitting 93-95 mph and topping out at 96.8. He also had his slider working, generating 10 swing-and-misses and four groundouts. Perhaps more importantly, he mostly kept the ball out of the air, aside from a solo homer off of the batt of Scott Kingery. The former West Virginia hurler struck out four and did not issue a walk. The Padres added Bergert to the 40-man roster in the off-season to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft. If Friday is any indicator, the young righty could be an important depth option for a Padres rotation that has already needed reinforcements this season.

Lake Elsinore has released its roster.

Don't know of the players who were left in AZ who is dealing with injury but some name prospect (including Tears, Hightower, Fountain, H.Cruz ... and some others)

I'm guessing there is going to be a lot of fluidity among the Padres minor league teams as you have many players shaking off injuries in extended ST and others making their professional debuts.  I'm going to try to make it out to Lake Elsinore as soon as I am able because that could be a fun team to watch, particularly if you like to watch potentially high upside pitchers hone their craft.

Further, we just don't know how good some of the hitters are until they are challenged at higher levels - don't have much depth throughout the system in position players but do have a few that could surprise beyond Salas and De Vries.  I agree with Fenn that Perlaza could be a dark horse to be rostered by San Diego - hope he doesn't have an opt out clause so that he can gain more confidence in El Paso and be ready to support the major league team when injuries occur.  Unless there is something physically wrong with Peralta, I'm thinking Padres will  try to get him on the EP roster sometime in late April/early May to further help with depth when needed.

Have to wonder what Peralta's strategy is. At 37 after a long career and knowing in 2024 he had to sign a minor league deal and ended up with a low salary ... not going to get a major deal. Hard to believe he has not had offers so expect his criteria includes the alternative of retirement unless it is a deal that really fits.

One guess, no hurry to sign and is angling for a deal (even a minor league deal with opt outs) with a legit contender and a decent chance of being called-up. In part that allows for some injuries to open the potential suitors.

So, Padres are a legit option IF he sees weakness (or injury) in the LHH Heyward / Sheets.

  • wonder if he is getting a call from Atlanta given the Profar situation?

Knehr is back at EP ... for ACL extended ST and coming off his 2024 surgery.

Wendeiken was put on IL and Brosseau was put on the "development list" to make room for Rosario.

The wait is almost over to see if the young arms in San Antonio have the talent to at least bridge the SP gap to the more highly ranked arms in Lake Elsinore and in the ACL.  Further, beyond Bradgley Rodriguez there are other promising RP arms throughout the minors.  Preller and staff have done a very good job of finding pitching talent and I hope we have excellent results across the board in the 2025 minor league season.
