Quote from Randy Manese on June 9, 2024, 6:46 amIm most worried about Snelling. Doesn't seem to have the same zip on his FB and the location of all his pitches has been spotty. It could be that in trying to develop his secondary pitches, all of his pitches have backed up on him. Like you, hoping that as the season goes on some of who we thought were the top prospects begin to find their game and show why we were excited about them before this year.
In the meantime, looking for continued growth from Pinales, Baez, Nett, Montgomery (if and when he comes back from injury) surprising recent outings by Whiting and the aforementioned Haynes and Lowe. Looks like the San Antonio coaching staff is trying to get the SP staff in the best position to deal with pitching in the majors and outside of Mazur and Kollar, its been rough going for Snelling, Krob and Lizarraga. On the other hand, just trying to build up endurance and confidence at the A level and despite lack of focus at times or lack of command, most of the pitchers at these two levels have responded well.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on June 9, 2024, 10:48 amWhat a wild day for our top affiliates. The Chihuahuas stage the huge comeback and The Missions win after the runner on first missed 3rd base on what otherwise would have been a walk off home run for The RockHounds.

Quote from Randy Manese on June 9, 2024, 11:48 amSnelling looking like 2023 for first 3 innings today. Hope it continues. Well, I jinxed him. Got hit hard in the 4th and 5th.

Walk-off appeal at 3B! 🙂

Quote from Randy Manese on June 12, 2024, 4:20 pmI said it last year after pitchers who launched in Lake Elsinore had great seasons and pitchers who subsequently were promoted to Lake Elsinore began to show great development - Thomas Eshelman is a terrific pitching coach! The last two days have seen exceptional performances by Pinales and Haynes - both who have gotten better and better this year at Ft. Wayne. Sure, they still have a ways to go, but it is amazing what Eshelman has done with a SP reclamation project (Cienfuegos), bringing back the injured (Haynes & Nett) and getting the most out of international signees (Baez and Pinales); Lesko has been the greatest challenge but even he has made progress toward reaching his potential. Eshelman could be at San Antonio and working with the top prospects but this group may surpass the others after all is said and done in results this year after working with Eshelman.

Quote from Randy Manese on June 15, 2024, 11:20 pmLesko starting to turn it around going 6 innings today, giving up just one hit and walked 3 against 4 Ks. Also, he had no HB or WP. Got ahead in the count and generally got weak contact; threw strikes over 60% of the time which is way better than he has been doing most of this year.
Down in San Antonio, Snelling looked fine for the first 4 but started getting hit hard in the 5th and then gave up 3 runs in the 6th. Seems like he has a hard time making in game adjustments this year and hitters are teeing off of him the second time around. Got to change pitch sequencing, eye level of batter, or make other changes to stop hitters from sitting on his average FB (seems to be down to 91 this year). In his favor is his youth and the fact he told the SA announcer that he knows he has to make these adjustments but they have been slow in coming. Still think he will eventually be in the majors but it may take more time than we thought.

Quote from fenn68 on June 16, 2024, 8:53 amI find the 2024 farm system "depressing" ... at the upper levels hard to call out any prospects that could be classified as average ML regulars. Mazur was considered the "most ready" ... and clearly is not. Snelling appears to have regressed. Lesko is not developing as fast as his early hype. No hitters.
I know Salas and DeVries are being pushed maybe above their readiness ... but both are struggling suggest it will take much longer for their ML debut than many were thinking this spring ... and adds some doubts whether they make that ML "star" status.
Would guess some lesser rated prospect will develop ... but "star" quality probably not and "near term" probably not.
The draining of the system to acquire Soto, Cease, Arraez to win in the short run will cause a real issue starting in 2026 when those three will no longer be around ... as also gone will be King, Kim, and Profar ... and Suarez likely opts out. System is not ready to back fill that talent.
What happens if the Padres deal some more legit prospects in the "win now" mode for 2024-25?

Quote from fenn68 on June 16, 2024, 10:25 amJust a reality check on dealing prospects ... consider the following:
2023. 243/391/406 (A/A+) vs 2024 189/333/337 (A+) .... Zavala
2023 255/361/437 (A+/AA) vs 2024 237/304/327 (AA) ... Martorella
2023. 274/413/428 (A+/AA) vs 2024 192/345/330 (AA) ... Marsee
2023. 267/363/400 (R / A) vs 2024 243/317/396 (A) ... Head
Not all that impressive for those four players moved in trades. Add
2023 308/393/538 (A/A+/AA) vs 2024 223/340/408 (AAA) ... Pauley.
Was 2023 a mirage on the talent of all five?
Note: Iriarte has a 4.02 ERA in AA as a SP ... not knocking on the door of the ML.

Quote from Randy Manese on June 19, 2024, 1:36 pmLake Elsinore, with a record barely over .500, clinched the 1st half of the Southern Division of the California League to gain a spot in the playoffs at the end of the season. This was a remarkable team effort because they lost two of their best position player prospects to promotion (Beshears) and trade (Head), had to deal with professional debuts of very young talent and their ups and downs (DeVries and Gonzalez) and only one consistent offense force in Romeo Sanabria. On the pitching side, they had trouble scraping together a 5 man rotation for much of the early part of the season and then had their best RP (Rodriguez) and LHSP (Sanchez) promoted to Ft. Wayne. Yet, they've managed to bring along their best pitcher back from injury (Lowe) and get surprising work out of Whiting, Mendez, Reyes, Yost and now Gutierrez. So kudos to the coaching staff and look forward to some of these guys moving up but others coming in from the ACL.

Quote from fenn68 on June 19, 2024, 2:24 pmSaw a note on MLBTradeRumors that Head looks to be on a season ending IL ... plus he was on the IL for most of the time since the trade to MIA (basically played very little for their MiL team).
