Quote from Randy Manese on August 14, 2023, 12:07 amBig series upcoming for Ft. Wayne TinCaps as they try to move ahead of the Dayton Dragons at home in a 6 game series beginning Tuesday. TinCaps saved Robbie Snelling from pitching the last game of the Lansing series so that he could start both the first and last game of the homestand. They come into the series tied with Dayton a 1/2 game behind Western Michigan; they also play Dayton in the last series of the year at Dayton. Besides taking care of business at home, they'll need a little help from Western Michigan opponents to make this a close race to the wire for the 2nd half division pennant.
Another close race to look at is the ACL Padres v. the ACL Dodgers. They play tomorrow and can get within 1 game of the division lead if they beat the Dodgers with only 6 games remaining; they don't meet again for the remainder of the season, so the Padres will also need a little help from other ACL teams besides having to keep winning.
Lastly, the Dominican Summer League Padres Gold squad is up 3 games in their division with 8 games to play. It should be noted that 3 of those games are against the DSL Padres Brown squad, who haven't beaten the Gold squad all year and another of the games is a completion of a suspended game against the Orioles Black squad in which the DSL Gold squad has a 7-5 lead going into the last 2 innings of play.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 14, 2023, 8:43 amHe's alternating with the other catchers and also DH'ing, just as he did in Lake Elsinore. Problem is it seems he can't get the ball out of the infield with a lot of ground balls (over 58% compared to 42% at LE) with little impact and an increased K rate, from 24% to 29%. He didn't play on Sunday which will give him 2 days rest before the important Dayton series. As I said earlier, even though you'd expect a teenager to have a lot of energy, these are the dog days of summer and he's still a kid growing into his body; his bat has definitely slowed down but hopefully some rest will bring back that sweet left-handed stroke with the same kind of impact we saw from him in July at Lake Elsinore.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 15, 2023, 2:22 pmLooks like Padres are trying to fortify the Hi A team to try to get into the playoffs by sending Henry Baez, David Morgan and Paplham to their pitching staff from Lake Elsinore. Lake Elsinore has had a tough couple of weeks and is almost out of the running but Ft. Wayne has a real chance based on what they do this week against Dayton and the remainder of the scheduled games. If Snelling brings home a win today, they are solidly in the competition.

His slash line with The Storm is one of the weirdest I've ever seen. In 106 PAs he's at .194/.453/.236 with 33 walks and strikeouts. He only had 14 hits and 3 doubles were his only extra base hits. For a guy hitting below the Mendoza line with no real power to draw so many walks is kind of wild. He's been much better in the complex league and he's still only 20, but he's going to have to start actually hitting a little more to have a chance.

Yep.
Really weird.
The good thing is plate discipline/pitch recognition, like with Soto, doesn't usually go away...and it's difficult to teach.
So if you have it,like this kid,and you can tweak your swing and add power....you're gonna be good.
Just thought it was interesting

Quote from Randy Manese on August 16, 2023, 6:21 pmMarsee is excellent at taking good routes, tracking the ball with closing speed to make the catch. I did see him drop a ball when he closed his mitt too soon but all his other errors, I believe, are throwing errors which are likely correctable. I can see him staying in center and becoming a more highly ranked prospect if he gets more impact with his swing, i.e, at least a few more doubles. He has the eye and the speed on the bases.
Pauley primarily played 3b for the Storm with just a few games at 2b. Of his 10 errors at 3rd at LE, 6 were fielding errors and 4 were throwing errors. At Ft. Wayne, he's played much more at 2b, with about a 1/3 of his time spent there; he has only 1 fielding error at 3b for the TinCaps. Pauley has had no errors at 2b at either LE or FtW. Pauley has just adequate range and decent hands but does seem to have a strong arm. In the infield, I like him more at 2b where he can turn the double-play and shows enough range to his right. If you were to compare Pauley with Castanon, Castanon is the better at 3b and it's a toss-up between the two at 2b. Pauley is having a great season, but Castanon is not getting the love that he should; he deserves a higher ranking in the Padres system of prospects by evaluators.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 16, 2023, 7:11 pmThanks.
I agree on Castanon…..how MLB.com has him 23rd behind guys like JD Gonzalez and Blake Dickerson is beyond me.
I have just been following Marsee & Pauley in the box scores.
Ranked 11 &12,same age and team mates.
Suddenly our system seems deep “and” top heavy….if that is even a thing.
5 in the top 100 and guys like these not even in the top 10.
Those wanting AJ fired because of the disappointing season at the ML level are taking his ability to acquire young talent for granted in my opinion.
Thanks.
